Eric Ruth, an independent developer who more than proved his prowess with Pixel Force: Left 4 Dead, recently showed off the fruits of his latest labor: A completely renovated, high-definition version of Mega Man 9. Ruth managed to recreate every single character, enemy and background by hand, programmed the game, and used a number of fan-made remixes of the original game's tracks. You can check out a video demonstration of Galaxy Man's stage just past the jump.
Ruth has decided not to complete the game for a number of reasons; the fear of a C&D from Capcom being a substantial one of them. He's already working on his next project -- and after making an HD game into an 8-bit game, and then an 8-bit game into an HD game, we can't wait to see what he does next.

WTF did he do to Rush!?

I don't see the point.
However, I encourage him to turn his talents to actually making a real original game, or at least being part of it. People who work in the indie space are constantly looking for artists.

This is a crime against nature. I do think that he has done some nice work recreating the game in HD (even though I dislike his rush). But megaman 9 is the wrong title to be giving a HD makeover.

Mega Man 9 was specifically NOT supposed to be in HD. This looks good, but it feels like a waste of time. Why not make, say, Sonic 3 into HD? I'd buy that in a heartbeat if it showed up on PSN.

maybe a game with different graphic filters? like 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit, 64-bit, etc...

Yeah, gradients are not pretty. This "HD" remix does in fact look like it was done in Corel Draw...5

It's sort of sad when someone in the game community actually does something interesting, regardless of how good it is, and a lot of people just put it down and hate on it.
As far as I can tell, it's just a guy doing something he enjoys and sharing it for others to see. He clearly put a lot of effort into this, and it doesn't look bad. I actually think it has a neat look to it, but that's just my opinion.
I do think this guy has talent though, and he should consider making his next project something original.

It would be neat if he did this to his own game, Mega Man Rocks, that way his hard work would actually see the light of day.

Why not remix a true Mega Man classic, like Mega Man 2 or Mega Man 7?

Kudos! it looks pretty cool, although I personally like the graphics of megaman 7 / megaman and bass the most!

If the guy made the game look like the original Mega Man's artwork from the first 2 NES games I'd buy it in a heartbeat. THAT is the version to make. This does look nice though.

Blech, it really looks bad.
There's a difference between low-res graphics as a retro throwback and this. While I do appreciate his effort, just about everything about it seems off. It doesn't say "Megaman" to me, it says "Hong Kong knockoff."
First off, the logo. Even a high-res logo would still use the same font/style... not this gradient rubbish.
Second, Megaman himself. The helmet looks like a mix of Megaman's and Megaman X's helmets. Megaman doesn't have a red gem on his helmet! If you want to do a highly-detailed Megaman, do it right like Hitoshi Ariga:

Otherwise, just stick with the usual official version, keep it simple.
And, oi, what happened to Rush? Looks like a greyhound with some red armor on.
It's a nice effort, but everything just seems off about it.

It's pretty cool he did this, but I don't care for his art style. I would like it a lot more if someone else drew it.

If Mega Man 9 had shipped with these graphics I might have been able to overlook its ass-rapingly hard difficulty level. I am just not of fan of having my eyes and my ass raped at the same time ;)

At the risk of sounding cynical, or like a troll, where is my incentive to fork over the money for new 8-bit MM games when I can just play the old ones?

I like it. I'm not big on scaling back graphics for the sake of nostalgia as I don't think graphics prevent a game from playing well.
Good effort.
I would like to see what he can do with Mass Effect though.

This is hideous. Not because I'm an 8-bit purist, but because this is objectively poor art and sprite quality. I'd like to see someone with a modicum of talent attempt this.

Sure its a lot of work, praise that..., but doesn't look like a megaman game.. I mean ..the art is weak, too much Westernized cartoon/ webcomics style ( almsot amateur ) ... would be great if he work with someone that draws really well, and can reproduce the style Capcom gives to the franchise, maybe manga, maybe chibi...etcetc.. Would look beautiful then...

Wow this guy is great. If one guy (And maybe 2 or 3 others) can make Megaman 9 neat looking.
A huge company like Capcom can't stop being lazy and made a This Gen Megaman game?

Neat idea. I'd honestly find 16 or 32bit fan versions of 9 or 10 to be a really awesome idea, like how they did the opposite with 7.
