Nintendo Power: Scribblenauts sequel coming this Fall
54
As evidenced by the image above, the latest issue of Nintendo Power reveals a sequel to 5th Cell's Scribblenauts for the Nintendo DS. According to a report from GoNintendo, the magazine feature additionally details the game's release window ("fall"), that it will receive "10,000 more words" and "120 new and improved levels," and will have a focus on the use of adjectives. Thankfully, the report also notes intentions to improve the game's controls -- a major setback of the first outing. We've shot an email to the developers and will hopefully have more information on the game sometime soon. For now, you can check out the full magazine cover right here.

That's exactly what you shouldn't do, impressions indicate that the first one has serious control issues, which seem to be getting addressed in the sequel. I avoided the first game as I loved the idea but wanted the problems to be ironed out before getting on board.

I completely agree with Markez. It's a superb game! I think the one problem I found with the controls is that if you moved the camera away from Maxwell for a second to look at something else. And you didn't move the camera while you were pointed away, the camera will shoot back, meaning you have to move the camera a lot when you're not looking at maxwell. But aside from that, the controls weren't a big problem, and the only problem I found with the words is that chemical reactions don't occur between spawned chemicals. I'm just a nerd, so it's not a real deal breaker at all for anybody. If you do decide to buy the game, a jetpack will become your new best friend.

@Markez - no, they are not 'garbage' opinions. I thought the idea was great and the game did it well but the control issues were very real and prevalent; so much so that it was detrimental to the overall experience and something they have to fix in the sequel.

The controls are pretty horrible, but the game isn't really about control, so--bizarrely--bad controls don't break the game. Unfortunately, the game is pretty repetitive. The bigger problem is that your encouraged to beat the levels using as few words as possible, which discourages you from trying more creative, complex, and fun solutions. All the times I saw people rambling on about what amazing things you can do in the game, they sounded Rube Goldberg-esque. However, when you're playing it, it quickly becomes apparent that using any kind of "combos" are unwise, because you can probably just say "wings" and do everything with that.
I usually don't buy sequels unless I beat the first game. I have serious doubts that I'll ever bother finishing Scribblenauts. I've played like 30 or 40 levels.. but.. meh.

Thing is, people are saying that game is crap just because the controls are bad.
And they are, but that aside the game's pretty good. I don't see any logic in calling a whole game horrible just because of the controls...
...Except for Lair I suppose. *shudders at the thought of the sixaxis controls*

@greenpangolin: I have Lair, and I didn't think the six-axis controls in it were that bad at all. The game was bad on its own. The proof is in the pudding: they released a patch that let you disable six-axis and just fly with the analog stick...and the game still sucked.
And actually, it wasn't that bad. It just wasn't that good either. Plus, for me, it crashed a lot.

"If there is a god"
I think it will have more words this time, but I'm positive the first one had God in it.

Scribblenauts is definitely worth a try, regardless of the problems you might have with controls. At least, I don't know, borrow it.
All I care about now is that the controls are being fixed up. Hopefully they do it correctly though...
Looking at the cover it really seems like adjectives play a big part. For example I can see a spiky refrigerator... Neat.

Man, how many times did you'd fail a puzzle because the controls failed to recognize you were trying to move an object and not direct Maxwell into fiery lava/off a cliff/into a bad guy etc.

Please don't down vote... it's just my opinion. I wasn't saying trying to start something.

Well, now that they've got basic mechanics down, maybe they can fix up some other basic mechanics- like controls. Or the camera. Or the controls.

So is this the "big news?" Remember before the media summit, Nintendo Power said their next issue would have a big surprise? While I loved the idea of Scribblenauts and had tons of fun with the game (despite the control issues), I hope that this isn't the only big news. I was hoping for, I don't know.... Pikmin 3?

If Shigsy is working on Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Zelda, then Pikmin 3 may be on the back foot, and at best may be a late player for this generation. Wave Race or F Zero wouldn't be bad games to introduce as last gen Sega did a pretty good job with F Zero and maybe Nintendo will be more willing to give their franchises to other companies under observation.

We'll see. Was in love with the idea of the first game bit the controls sucked. It's not a "the game is good but annoying" kind of controls, it's a "f this, I'm throwing this game away" kind of controls. Shame.

Also, what is that in the lower-right of the image? "Spiky Refrigerator" as per the increased emphasis on adjectives?

You clearly don't have roommates. Spiky Refrigerators are a must.

While I do realize the game can be fickle with ropes, and if you try to play using platforming skills instead of vocabulary, it's near impossible.... but, I still think it's a damn good game.
I only play it in short bursts though, like during ad breaks in hockey games. And I only really do the puzzle stages.

Why are they adding new words? All you need is God, rope, and wings. Maybe a helicopter.

Well, this is good news. I was intrigued by the innovation of the original, but heard a number of bitter complaints about the controls and a couple other quibbles. I had a feeling the game would be further ironed out in a sequel, and it looks like I was right. If it smooths over the shortcomings of the last game, this one I might very well buy.

I hope they'll fix the challange of clearing the level 3 times in a row with different words =(
It completely ruined the game IMO being able to type the exact same word 3 times with another word accompaning it (like "red rope", "long rope", "zebra rope")
