I'm not quite sure all 7,500 Joystiq-ers are playing (me being one). I haven't gotten my email with my code. I signed up and when I go to their site it says I'm signed up and it'll be emailed when the beta starts, but I just haven't gotten my code. I know i didn't mistype my email because I had to activate my newly created account to sign up for it. I hope this isn't shit where they release keys in waves.

"It feels considerably more balanced and less random than the likes of Mario Kart" This is clearly said by someone who has NOT played Mario Kart. If they had, they would know that Mario Kart is designed to create a balanced race by offering players in the bottom ranks to receive power-ups that are more powerful then players in the top ranks. However, this method always leads to some serious frusteration, which would be better if it were completely random (imagine what would happen if the player in first earned a blue shell! They shoot it and it races through the course and back at you... that'd actually be kinda interesting).

You are mistaking balance for "get lucky and you'll win".
In Mario Kart, you can get lucky on the final lap with items and come back from way down the pack, even though the people ahead of you were there because they are driving better.

Sooooo it sounds like you say Mario Kart *is* balanced, but then you kind of finish by implying it *isn't* balanced? I love Mario Kart Wii and all, but in a racing game, I don't think balanced means people in last can catch up at seemingly any time.

That's not luck, it's designed that way. If you are in the back of the pack, you're far more likely to get something useful over a banana or green shell. However, if you're in first place, you'll NEVER get a blue shell, bullet bill, lightning, etc.

It's especially prevelant in Mario Kart Wii and Mario Kart DS.

What I'm saying is that Mario Kart is *designed* to be balanced, but because of that design, it leads to frusteration.

I probably shouldn't have clouded the topic by hating on the balanced design topic, it's just out of frusteration in playing Mario Kart Wii on 150 cc class, getting mere feet from the finish line, only to be Blus Shelled by an 8th place CPU player.

However, the Blur hands-on makes a point of saying that Mario Kart is random and not balanced, I'm saying that it is balanced and is not random (or as random as implyed by Joystiq.). I hope that makes more sense. I guess I'm saying that if Blur is the way it is, then contrasting it to Mario Kart is not a good idea.

Alex, have you ever played a well balanced game in your life? Mario Kart is not balanced in the very least. It's somewhat driving skills but mostly luck. If you're going to claim something about a game that has NEVER been officially said by the developers, give us other hard evidence. Like, recorded evidence.

Alex, that's pretty much the opposite of "balanced", so I'm not really sure what you're trying to say.

Starcraft is one of the most balanced games out there, yet it doesn't spawn you 200 bonus units when your base is half destroyed.

Balance is about giving all players the same level of advantage and disadvantage regardless of their choice of character/race and their standing in the game. Mario Kart gives a clear (huge) advantage to players that are far behind. That's not balance, that's catch-up AI, which is the precise opposite of balance.

I'd encourage some of you to re-read IGN's review of Mario Kart Wii, as it further explains the point I'm trying to make:

http://wii.ign.com/articles/868/868012p2.html (page 2 is the link, as that's where they discuss my point).

I'm not trying to hate on Mario Kart (love it) or Blur (looks good), I only wanted to point out that contrasting Mario Kart and Blur in terms of randomness/balance is a poor choice because Mario Kart is designed to be balanced and is not as random as some people appear to believe (which is great for Nintendo, it means they can create the illusion of randomness for some of their "lesser" minded consumers).

How is what I'm saying the "opposite of balance"? isn't the point of creating balance to create equal opportunity for all players involved? Randomness does not create balance. Balance is added by design.

Nintendo made a conscious choice in designing Mario Kart by ensuring all players get some form of equal opportunity. If you're in the back half of the race pack, you earn far better items (to propell you to higher ranks) then those in the front half of the race pack (whom generally receive items that help defend their position). THAT is balance. Apparently, Blur offers a similar system. So, in that sense Mario Kart and Blur are alike. However, in this hands-on article, the writer makes a point of saying that Mario Kart doesn't have balance and instead relies on randomness, which is NOT the case. My point here is to defend Mario Kart and say that it is designed to be balanced, not random. It's amazing some of you are having such a difficult time grasping this concept. I would surmise that most of these people downvoting me or commenting contrasting opinions haven't actually played Mario Kart.

Go play Mario Kart, keep a list of the items you receive when you're in first place and compare it to a list of items you recieve when you're in last place. They will be completely different, which will illistrate the point I am making, that it is designed that way and not random.

Balance, to me, means that equally skilled players playing the game will have a VERY close match. Mario Kart's "balance" involves players from each end of the skill spectrum on the same playing field. It's an odd sort-of-balance that's not quite the good kind of balance. Accessibility I think would be a better term. Mario Kart is very accessible, not balanced. With perfect balance, if I'm better than you, I should win.

See, P-Dude gets what I'm saying.

The balancing act in Mario Kart creates equal footing for all players, however it's not a good balance. It IS balance though, and it's balance through design.

I was trying to add that second point of it not being a good balance, but Joystiqers were having a difficult enough time trying to understand the "balance" bit.

So, if Mario Kart is balanced in a way that creates accessibility for every skill level, and Blur has a similiar balancing act. Then the problems we have in Mario Kart will translate over to Blur.

Alex, 'balanced' doesn't mean that everyone has an equal chance of winning. A balanced game leaves most, if not all, of the result of the race up to the player's skill. There's no skillful or strategic way to use items in Mario Kart; they are entirely results of pure luck which drastically change the results of the race. When luck renders a player's skill moot, the game is not balanced in the slightest.

Alex, the word you're looking for is "deliberate", or "intentional". Not balanced.

You're right, Mario Kart is not "random". It intentionally gives players far behind better items. That's deliberate, but not balanced. In fact, you could even say it's intentionally unbalanced.

A balanced game means that the outcome of the game comes down to player skill, and not luck or decisions made by the game. In a perfectly balanced game, a skilled players should beat a noob 99% of the time.

Mario Kart is intentionally the opposite of that. The game is designed to be kid friendly. Nintendo wants a kid to have a fighting chance against someone that's played the game non-stop for 3 years. For that reason, it's deliberately unbalanced.

You took Joystiq's use of the word "random" too literally. They didn't mean you get random items. They meant the winner of a race is random, as it is not dependent on skill and anyone could end up in first just depending on when a player happens to fall back to a certain part of the pack that the game determines is lightning bolt territory.

Take for example the scenario where I hit you with this incredible bank shot green turtle shell on the last lap and you fall back to 7th place. Now the game awards you a lightning bolt because you're in 7th place, you use it and drive right past the whole pack and win the race. I just outplayed you, but you won. That's not balance. That's luck, you got killed at the right time for the game to decide it benefited you.

I'm not playing any wip builds unless I'm getting paid! Never really understood how willing working gamers would pick up and do someone elses work free of charge rather than enjoy one of their released titles. But I guess that's just my inner tester talking. Glad I don't do that for a living anymore.

I agree to a certain extent. I actually *want* to play this game. Playing a beta build is like watching a trailer for a movie, or watching a test-screening where the sfx aren't finalized, that sort of thing.

I too work in QA, although I would never actually want to use this software without getting paid (as in, part of a job). I agree that it sucks that a beta demo is essentially free QA for the developer, and we the testers don't get paid. But I would rather that then the dev release the software unfinished and rely on consumers that paid for it to have to find the bugs, then release patches and hot fixes. God is that ever annoying.

Hey everyone,

At the time of writing this preview, the plan was still for everyone to join the already-active beta on Monday. We obviously don't have a way of checking if each one of you had gotten your codes yet -- apparently, most are still waiting. Hopefully, codes will go out by the end of the day.

Judging by the tone of some of the comments, it may have come across like we were lording beta access over you guys. That really wasn't the intention!

Fishy, since Bizarre are based in the UK (right?), and in 3 hours it'll be March 9th over there. If they were America-based I'd give them some more time.

They haven't even announced that they're having problems.

Unless this means that the Joystiq codes were duds.
