*sigh* If only there was cross-platform play between Live and PC, then I could play with my PC buddies. I have about 50% of my friends on one platform and 50% on the other.

To my knowledge, the only game you can do that with is Lost Planet. If Capcom can do it, why not other groups?

Agreed, this is the most fail of an announcement ever. From the title I thought it was going to be with XBL but, now that I realise it's just Mac I'm seriously wondering why this "feature" was announced. I'm trying to figure what game that was released for Mac and PC that didn't allow both users to play against each other?

More importantly why is Valve wasting their time on porting to the Mac OS. Any Mac user that's wanted to play this game by now would've Bootcamped it by now... The time and resources used for this crap-ass pet project could've been better used making Half-Life Episode 3...

@Latin_Trident,

There are actually 3 games that support it currently: Shadowrun, Universe at War: Earth Assault, Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Colonies Edition. Additionally BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger is supposed to support cross-platform play when it comes out later this month.

It's actually a feature that was heavily touted about GFWL when the program first launched, so it is disappointing that more developers don't implement it. In Valve's case however I doubt it will ever happen since Steam and GFWL are basically competitors. :(

Platinum, the cost of Windows equates to multiple missed console games, which is one of the reasons I haven't installed boot camp. There's also the fact that I don't want to lose space to multiple operating systems when I don't need 'em. I haven't wanted to play games on my Mac, but now I probably will because it will be so easy.

@Platinum_Skeet Why? Because some of us prefer the Mac platform and would rather not have to boot into bootcamp. Why the hostility anyway? If you don't like it, then skip the article and move on with your life.

All in all, imho, awesome awesome news.

Also, I'm sure that the team behind Steam is the same one behind Half-Life. And the guys behind engine coding are the same ones doing story and graphics.

@dastranger & aristokrat

My frustration isn't with the Mac OS platform it's with Valve spending all of it's resources on everything else but, Half-Life Episode 3.

I have a Macbook Pro Bootcamped with Windows7 Home-Premium and I'm happy for the users that will take advantage of it. But in all honesty to me it is a minority of users. I'm happy for that minority and I'll probably end up buying this because it now stretches across 3 of my computers instead of 2 but, announcing features like "PC can play Mac users" is wasting time. The resources could've been used to do something more ground-breaking like PC & XBL or finally finishing up the Half-Life series...

It just seems to me that they're shafting the Vast majority (PC, Xbox, PS3) for the few (Mac)...

Platinum_Skeet - not the same teams. It always annoys me when people assume any effort is taking resources away from "game X." Different people/teams do different jobs. Sometimes companies even hire new people for specific projects, like say, porting the Source engine to Mac! Crazy!

Skeet, you don't know what all this meant in terms of "using resources" and delaying other projects. You're sorta just talking for the sake of complaining.

Not having to reboot with BootCamp is a huge benefit to anyone who plays these games on a Mac.

Having talked to some friends in the industry (they work for a company that rhymes, with uh, lungie) the trouble with console/PC cross gaming is that console gamers would basically get owned. The fidelity of control in a PC version of the game is much higher than in a console game (most of which use some type of aim assist, or increase the area of contact). Yeah it would be fun to play cross platform in theory, but I don't think it would take me long to rage quite a game of L4D2 when I keep getting snipped from across the map by someone on a PC rug running at beyond HD resolution with asuper precise mouse.

Well, THIS mac owner will be at the top of the scoreboard, boasting about his silky smooth fps, and the skills to back it up!

I stopped PC gaming when my work required me to own a mac.
For me (a PC gamer at heart) turning to consoles was my only option.

Now... I'M BACK BABY!

Now all we need is Starcraft 2 to be released, and I'm back on the LAN circuit.

As a former Mac gamer (and current bootcamp user), I can't think of a game where this hasn't been the case. Maybe someone else can, but cross platform play between Mac and PC is commonplace. It's the consoles that don't play nice with others.

Want to know a secret? You can program the Mac Mighty Mouse to acknowledge a right click when you click the right side of it.

@Reuben: Too bad the Mighty Mouse has the worst sensitivity ever to this programmed right-click. Thank God my work uses giant pretty Wacom tablets instead of mice for our Mac machines. I can't imagine attempting post production editing with a Mighty Mouse. We have one machine that still has a Mighty Mouse and everyone here avoids it like the plague. You're better off with buying a cheap USB 3-button mouse.

I totally agree. I hate the mighty mouse. I was just trying to say that the myth about their being no right-click isn't really true.
