It appears mobsters aren't the only things getting rubbed out in Mafia II, as 2K Games announces it has signed a license agreement with Playboy magazine for the mob saga. The pictorial publication will have over 50 of its "vintage covers and Centerfolds" inside the game when it eventually releases.
The iconic publication first premiered in 1953, so unless the game, which covers the '40s and '50s, is rewriting history, the Playboy collectibles won't show up until the latter part of the game's story. The magazine apparently won't merely be window dressing either, as players will have the ability to "collect virtual copies of the iconic magazine" -- to read the articles, of course. If you have roommates, we recommend investing in Purell hand wipes. We're not implying anything, simply "safety first." It is still flu season, after all.

This would be the best "gotta collect 'em all" mechanic yet. Nice use of "rubbed out" btw.

I should also point out that the cars in the original Mafia game all had car stereos. I believe the original gamestarted in the 20s, and car stereos weren't invented until the 1930s.
A little issue like playboys appearing in the wrong time frame wouldn't be any worse than that.

Of course. You know, there was a time, many moons ago, where nude women were not confounded to the Internet. How I miss those days...
...except the body hair. Ugh.

TBH, I liked how women looked like in '50s Playboy. I'm a fan of Pin-up.

While I appreciate the classic centerfolds for their cultural and aesthetic value, is Playboy seriously considered wank-inducing to anyone in today's modern era of internet ultra-porn? It's more in line with something you'd see at the Louvre these days.

Every time Playboy tries to get "into the game", it feels like an old Uncle who desperately wants to hang in a teen's party.

If that uncle brought hot platinum blonds with him, he's welcome at my party any time.

I just hope these "vintage" Playboy centerfolds are as they originally looked... not as they look today.

I was really looking forward to playing this, and then they announced its a DX11 exclusive game. I mean seriously? I can understand dropping support for DX9. But DX10?!

That was you? I also went to a focus group some months ago as well. There was this one idiot who was very loud by constantly complaining about how "terrible" the game was. He wouldn't leave me alone until I told him I agreed with him. By the end they had to kick him out. I think his name was Orville. He should probably stick to making popcorn.

Minor technical point, Joystiq staff: Saying that the game "releases" is just illiterate. "Release" is a transitive verb. 2k Games will release Mafia II. The game will be released. The game cannot release itself--though that would be some trick.
