Hmmm. Something that could actually teach me how to play a guitar AND give me some gamerscore would be a insta-buy. And again, I ask myself why there is no Xbox Fit. Give me achievements, I'll give you my fat.

Couldn't have said it better.

I think the major barrier on this one will be the price, provided the game doesn't suck ass.

Nope it's not.

No, if I can't use the guitar already collecting dust in my house then I'll stick to the 5 button format. I'm not buying another guitar peripheral.

Isn't that too much? I mean, its nice that you are able to learn to play guitar but, extreme realism take out the fun of playing, of pretending.

I never said that playing a guitar was not fun.
But sometimes, being too realistic spoils the fun. Games are just pastimes. Most people just can't play guitar and are not interested on learning...Its the same thing as driving a car or playing war games.

The point of Rock Band and GH is that they allow people that have absolutely NO musical talent to enjoy the feel of playing a guitar relatively quickly. To push the genre to the point where it's practically no different creates a barrier for the non-artist.

The game will not be as popular because it will end up too difficult for the average player.

My dad (who has been a gigging guitarist for over thirty years) gets really angry when I talk about playing Rock Band. He thinks it's taking people away from learning a real instrument. The people I know who play would never pick up a real instrument, but they do like making a fool to themselves playing glorified karaoke with a couple of beers in 'em.

@Dale,

My best friend plays guitar in a band, but then again GH and RB came out after he started playing. His brother on the other hand learned through Rock Band before finally teaching himself to play only recently.

I don't think it's going to subvert people from the actual instrument. I think it's more in a class of it's own, especially since it doesn't accurately portray what it's like to portray the real thing. People genuinely interested will probably eventually try out the real thing.

Your dad has a good point. I played Gran Turismo back in the day, and now I still don't know how to drive a car. Wish I could ride a bike instead, but I also had Paperboy.

They can't call it a "learning tool" the same way Wii fit can't promise you'll get in shape or Brain Age making you smart. Playing this game won't make you a super guitarist. What it will help you do is strum the appropriate notes, which is something, at least.

If they call it a learning tool, they'd also have to say that the guitar will make your fingers sore for weeks, you'll have no coordination between your hands, you'll lose all your guitar picks, and the sound you get from the guitar will sound muffled because you're not used to pressing the strings in the right places with the right tension.

Since you can still plug it into an amp and stuff, I can't see why you can't take it to the next level yourself. Single string strumming and powerchords are about as simple as guitar gets (within reason), but they're a good way to introduce people to guitars before going over more complex chords, techniques, and the likes.

People just don't get it. Sure, it may be more realistic, but a good game experience will most likely be impossible for anyone not willing to sink weeks and months of time into it. And by that point, aren't you better off learning guitar? Guitar Hero and Rock Band work because they are simplified. Their setup allows both casual players to jump in and enjoy, while hardcore players also have room to improve. This concept has no clear point of entry like Guitar Hero and Rock Band do. And if beginners have a hard time picking up a game, then there won't be much of an expert audience, or any audience at all, for that matter.

You spend a lot less time learning GH or RB than you do a real guitar, This is the thing most people dont seem to understand when they whip out the tire "learn a real instrument" argument. It's not about learning to play real music. Real is work, these are GAMES. They're meant to simulate something you'll never be able to do in real life in a reasonable time frame and still enjoy it.

An average person will drop a real guitar in 30 seconds after realizing that quickly strumming it only results in noise compared to a game that provides an instant reward.

this game isn't teaching you how to play guitar, it plays like rockband or guitar hero for the most part, the only difference is the addition of powerchords and some individual string plucking. Besides that, this isn't targeting the exact same audience as guitar hero or rockband.

If it isn't $300, I'm down.

Here's my list why:

1.) I have NO Rock Band or Guitar Hero games. Yes...I sh!t you not.
2.) This game doesn't have the words "Rock" or "Guitar" in the title.
3.) That guitar is sexy in black.
4.) While the game isn't a teaching tool, having a starter guitar would kick ass for me as I've always wanted to grow some balls and learn an instrument.

You kids and your solid black guitars, I play a blond Telecaster (although I also have a Fender Jazz Bass in black with a white pickguard).

I also believe its lack of "Hero" is more appealing.

What happens when the person who's playing the game breaks a string? or even if it goes out of tune? I have a friend that started about the same time I did (5 years ago) and he still has trouble doing those 2 things (only because he doesn't want to learn/is an asshole).

@Sidebuster

Then I guess those people are SOL. Breaking a string really shouldn't happen, so long as you're on top of things. I don't think anybody's seen game play footage of this, so who knows if the strings really even matter.

Breaking strings is normal. I've been hit with them a few times. As long as you do proper maintenance you shouldn't really have too much of a problem. Try to replace your strings every month or so, depending on how often you play. Poor intonation pisses me off more than breaking strings does.

I've only ever had string break on my crap guitars, because I don't bother to properly maintain them. Seriously, if you buy nice strings, you can leave them on a guitar for months at a time without a problem in intonation or tuning. I have a cheap Les Paul that I haven't tuned in a year that it still pretty much perfectly in tune (although that definitely is a rarity).

This story confuses me. Will you have to hit the right string and the right fret at the same time or is it just one or the other? To quote "What's unusual about the Power Gig guitar, in the context of a Guitar Hero-style game, is that players can be required to press any string in a specified region of the guitar fret, or press the exact proper string. They can be allowed to strum any string on the guitar or be required to strum a specific one". This makes it seem like one or the other. If that's the case this really decreases my interest in the game as it doesn't seem a good allegory to playing real guitar.

Another paragraph states that in chord mode you need to hit the right strings but that "It won't teach notes, but, in an indirect way, you'll be learning how to play". I would really like a screenshot of the in-game interface, or even better a video to clarify how the game is played
