The strings will only matter if you want to play real music on it or play a more difficult mode. Like the GH and RB games you only have to hold the right color and strum at the right time... of course this is when using it with a compatible GH or RB game, there's no telling what PG will eventually demand from you.

Guitar Hero "notated" songs played on an actual guitar will sound AWFUL.

The guitar has a dampener that can be raised so the strings don't make a sound when it's being used to play games.

If the game is good, I'll def. get this. I've been desperately meaning to learn guitar.. I love that this peripheral can be used like a regular guitar as well. They should have implemented a way to teach note reading, because this is obviously aimed toward the hardcore rhythm gamers among us...

No actually it's aimed towards the people who misguidedly mock the people who play rhythm games.

...And I had told myself I was done buying guitar peripherals. Looks like I'm going to be broke again. Broke, but happy I hope.

Why not just come out with a pickup similar to the Roland GK-3? It detects individual notes on each string and you can use any guitar you want (or already have). It'd make for a great learning experience, while still providing the same gaming function of this guitar.

I don't understand why everyone approaches this is some sort of black/white/no-gray-area issue. It's not like life is about ONLY playing a real instrument (really, before music video games, how many people were already not playing instruments) or ONLY about playing a video game (without the music genre, we'd all be playing something else anyway).

My advice is: do whichever you feel like doing and don't let someone else's chip on their shoulder drive your decisions. I could care less what some random musician thinks about my hobby choices. If someone wants to keep their music out of Rock Band or Guitar Hero because it's not "pure enough", fine, they'll be the ones missing out on a new generation of fans. If they're going to get all high & mighty about something like Power Gig, they'll deserve the lack of royalty checks when the game fails (sales-wise).

My wife bought me a keyboard several years ago; I play it maybe... never. She bought me a guitar last year; I play it... oh, right, I've maybe strummed a little just to hold the guitar and entertain my kids, but I have yet to learn a chord or take a lesson. Sure, it might be fun to learn, but my desire just isn't there...

I'll stick with Rock Band & Guitar Hero because video games are my hobby and it's "enough" for me to be able to mimic a rock star...

(At the end of the day, shouldn't musicians be glad we aren't all trying to start bands? More bands means more competition means less revenue because consumers/listeners have to make decisions about what to buy and what concerts to attend. We can either spend money to buy RB/GH and the musicians get royalties... or we can spend money on our own instruments and start our own band and the musicians get nothing.)

Sadly, I think the issue is jealousy. The elitists that actually know how to play music think it's mocking something they spent years learning when someone a 3rd their age gets notoriety on youtube for "tapping buttons" while they languish in a garage band playing kids parties. They don't understand it's not the same thing and people calling themselves rock gods while tapping the buttons behind their heads doesnt help the understanding.

The fact that it can plug into my amp is already a giant win. This thing looks ridiculously sexy, although it looks like its squire quality, but hey thats why it can plug into your box right ^_^

Less than Squier quality. Remember that this will also be stuffed with whatever it needs to make Xbox signals so I can't see it being that good of a guitar.
I wonder if the pickups can be changed...

How about a triangle learning game I can plug my electronic triangle (with midi in/out) into also?

I'd buy THAT for a dollar.

firstly this is awesome..... finaly i can play a guitar game and play the song as i actualy would on my own guitar.
hopefully...

the thing im confused with is how the guitar sends its info to a console,

if it were via a standard wireless transmitter that just sends the sound the pickups pick up to the console then it is identified as a note, then they should have something that plugs into the guitar output to a standard amp, that way we soulc use our standard electrics or pickuped acoustics..... but then thered be tuning involved.
but i dont think it would act that way as its confusing to someone who has never used a guitar before....
but thatd be a cool way to do it never the less

if i get it it will need the option to swap the pickups as being a game controller probably wont have a very good pickup.

Look at OFFBEAT (http://jamorigin.com) - that's for traditional guitars!

I have Guitar Hero and Rock Band, they are fun for the first 3 days if you can play expert, after that, it gets boring... I play the REAL guitar, but just know tons of random parts from a lot of bands, but this could teach you the right finger placement and how to play a song.

So, basically, this game will be a MUST buy on my list.

I think its a really bad idea because there is people that actualy can be bovered to put effort into their guitar instead of playing on their 360 24/7 then all of the suuden this comes along and then the people who have put effort into it have wasted their time and some fat slobs learn their chords quickly and get good at guitar..a kick in the face for all gutair players really.

Oh gee how dare somebody else try to become talented musically. That's just so horrible. Does it really matter how the hell people learn how to play the damn thing? Shouldn't you be happy that more people are becoming interested in your passion?
