GDC 2010 is the hotness this week, but according to Microsoft's Mindy Mount (speaking at a tech conference in NYC), E3 should be fun this year, too. As you might expect, Microsoft is bringing "the full lineup" of Project Natal titles to the convention in June.
We know there are a whole bunch of developers working on Natal titles, including EA, Capcom, Forza Motorport's Turn 10, and SpawnPoint Studios. Mount promises that Microsoft is "putting some of our best people on coming up with great game ideas for this, and we're going to have some great stuff." We'll start working out now to make sure we have enough stamina to flail our limbs all week long.

From what MS said a week or so ago, most of the launch titles will be casual oriented... not saying that's bad, but that genre is generally the nesting grounds for shovelware.

Hopefully Nintendo will leave the Wii at home as well.
Oh wait, thats different.

if Micro wants to get most of the gaming community interested, they'd have to have some SERIOUS launch titles, not stupid casual games, even 3 for the moment will do me fine, 3 big budget titles making use of the natal features and showing off what it can do, otherwise my money will be staying right in its pocket.

I wonder what will have a greater delay.. the start of Microsoft's presentation or Natal...

Is anyone really planning on picking one up? For party games I can see it maybe being fun but as a single player experience not so much. I would love to hear some more hands-on playtime when it's available.

I wouldn't mind picking one up to try to get my gf more into gaming. She was into the Wii for a while but...the games just weren't there that interested her much. She's not exactly Metroid-fan or Zelda fan. More of a sports game on wii or momma's cook off challenge fan.
I'm hoping there will be some decent Natal games I can use to maybe convert her a bit to a casual gamer and someday hardcore(I wish) so she wouldn't judge all the time I spend playing video games :D

If they implement head tracking and things of that nature, sure. If it's just going to be another wonky peripheral, no.
I personally have quite a bit of faith in it, looking at how much support comes from game developers, but only time will tell, I suppose. But hell, even if I can flip through my Netflix cue by waving my hand around, that'll do. I'm lazy!

Speaking of party games, I wonder how a Mario Party game would be if this was one of the many input methods (this just meaning full body tracking, not specifically Natal).
Oh no, it's a canoe race! Twirl your arms like you're rowing a boat! Whoever looks the silliest wins!

@Wes: speaking from experience, you probably don't want your gf to be a hardcore gamer. My girl's not there yet, but when there is a game she gets hooked on, we have to fight (not in a nasty way) over who gets to play. I'm just throwing that out there, man.

That's why my fiance agreed that we should get a second Xbox just for her during that Walmart $100 gift card deal a while back. That's why I'm marrying her.
On a side note, any woman that makes you feel guilty about your hobby is not a keeper...

The fact that they're showing everything they're bring to the table at E3 has me hopeful. That means we'll know for sure if it'll be good or just a gimmick. Microsoft has said they're going to be "very careful" which games they bring to the table, so we'll see if they stick by that promise.
Two things will determine whether or not I pick this up, one being the price. The second will be if I see more than one game that looks like it's an Xbox 360 title, and NOT a motion control title. I want a game that treats Natal like what it is, a controller, not like a brand new system. Too many games treat the Wiimote like something to build the game around, and not something to play the game with. That doesn't mean I want tacked-on motion controls, I simply want a game that doesn't scream "Yep, that's for Natal," like the picture for this article, for example.

This e3 will suck , it will be spammed with PS3 motion control and NATAL. Nintendo will show zelda, mario ga2, metroid:m . That's pretty much it other than 2-3 new surprise exclusives. Maybe a resistance 3 or kz3 cgi trailer , socom 4 news. blah. Hopefully Gearz 3 shows up

I have a feeling they will release a AAA title or three that incorporates the Natal, they wont be demoing shovel ware, Something like Forza : Natal much like the burnout demo possibly some mixture with fable 3 in some sort of interactive way.
To be really adventurous with it , possibly halo wars with voice recognition / head tracking and specific hand movements that can allow things to be grouped and moved , like drawing a circular shape equating to a group being selected.. Basically think the sony psmc e3 demo last year but using your hands to select items and in halo wars..
After those 2 -3 games are released though I think it will only be used as a platform for shovelware. I really cant see capcom, EA etc actually building games only around the Natal. If early reports are right, it will need a 50MB database running to calculate your movement and predict what you are actually doing. Only way this could be done right and kept "real time" would be to have this db run from within ram. So in essence any game that utilises Natal automatically suffers that reduction in RAM. If they actually kept the onboard processor they stood a chance of third party studios taking this thing seriously, as it stands other than depth perception, I dont see much else that cant already be done by any camera peripheral, its basically a software algorithm layered on top of a infrared grid thats projected with a b&w sensor picking up the grid breakups (your typical house alarm security system) and a camera that actually captures the image.. Basically its all raw data. The engine or algorithm has to filter all third party objects within the given space and focus on you and your movements..
This is the exact same thing as what both the wii and the psmc do except its in reverse, which makes its processing job all that much harder.. The wii has an infrared sensor and an infrared diode /camera in the wii mote.. It doesnt need to filter any background noise doesnt need to calculate anything because an object is being tracked.
Same principle with the PSMC / ARC whatever you want to call it. Simple mathematics a sphere of a given size with a given light source is tracked by a camera the sphere size gives the relative distance the closer the sphere the closer the user the further the sphere the further the user, simple algorithm to define the size and the relative distance of the user which is then easily computed..
The wii might not actually be able to calculate the relative distance from the actual screen.. It should be able to do calculate by response time how far away is the diode from the receptor ? But then the response times may just be too fast it cant do a "ping" by that I mean a response from diode to receptor back to diode.. Not sure about that, im sure some one else will know the answer.
I also have a feeling the PSMC will suffer the same fate, only 1st party devs will develop any proper AAA titles and the rest will just bring out Shovelware HD (tm)
for it. Its close enough to be able to easily port the majority of the wii motion control code directly across (it has gyros much like the wii -- probably the same api's used as the six-axis api's).. Possibly updated version of Dead Space using the wiimote layout , house of the dead HD ? Possibly a new iteration of Time Crisis without the stupid gun (I bought the game on launch still havent played it -- doesnt work too well with a projector ...)
Anyway I digress, I have a coursework due and its just so freaking boring..

I can see Natal going beyond video games into personal computers, cell phones, kiosks, etc. It's the future of natural user interfaces. You don't do all that research just to make a toy.

I have a 360 and love it the way it is. If I wanted a Wii I would have purchased a Wii. Motion controls have been failing since the PowerGlove on NES and I'm not expecting much from this. Look how bad and boring most Wii motion games are.

It will go beyond the 360. Right now they are just testing out the tech on the field with the most ease of implementation and short term promise.
You will see this get implemented into Windows and Office probably at the end of the decade. Laptops would be easy by just adding another camera at the top, and desktops will get a version of what Natal will use.
For what though? Natal isn't just motion capture, but face recognition and voice recognition as well. There are certainly possibilities there.

I predict something wonky will happen with Natal on stage. People will say it is because of lighting or the large audience. Same wonkiness will be delivered to your living room.

That is going to be their biggest problem. Just like last year when they both unveiled their motion control schemes as TBA, and Nintendo showed them up with "Wii Sports Resort, available in 1 month," this time they're going to show nascent motion control launch titles, and Nintendo's going to have "Zelda, the definitive motion experience" or something like it
Granted, Fable 3 could take it on in that respect, but we shall see.

Seriously you guys need to put the crack pipe down..
Can you imagine sitting on the train working on your laptop doing some stupid funky hand and head gestures, looking like an idiot ?
The real implementation of this sort of tech is already being used in phones and the ipad its called touch screen on your lap or in your hands, or somewhere comfortable where your arms dont start hurting because you have to constantly hold it up and do some stupid gestures .. Think about it what could Natal possibly do to make your laptop usage or your desktop usage any better ?
Full body controls while I sit at my desk ? Think about possible applications and it all becomes pretty crap pretty quickly.. The problem of having nothing in your hands is that your hands get tired just being held up in the air .. Minority Report ?
Look up gorilla arm:
