PlayStation Store expands, offers HD movies for purchase

Don't want to wait for a Blu-ray disc from Netflix? Wish you could watch an HD program instantly (provided your internet connection is robust enough)? The PlayStation Store will be updated today with HD movies for purchase from all six major studios. Previously, movies for purchase were relegated to SD options, whilst HD movies were available exclusively for rent. According to a press release from SCEA, "PlayStation Network is the first to offer high definition movies for purchase from all of the major movie studios," including 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Universal, and Warner Bros.

The HD update will be available today on the PlayStation Store in the US, with "plans to launch soon in the U.K., France, Germany, and Spain." (Sorry, Canada!) While we still prefer owning Blu-ray discs, this downloadable option is yet another way for people to access content.

I'm pretty sure at least some movies were available for purchase in HD. I believe Twilight was.

OK, i've just had a look on there...why is everything so expensive? For the price of owning most of the movies in SD I could get them on BD, or 3 movies on DVD.

Also what the hell did they do to the cover of ST: FIrst Contact?

To be fair I wasn't really looking at the top of the screen every time I went on PSN to see if a little Video button had appeared, so I never noticed it. Must've missed the news post.

As soon as the Store has The Terminator, I'm all over it. Been waiting, b/c I didn't want to get it in SD... (Yeah, I know I could have already had it on DVD or BR, but I have it on UMD, and for some reason I want this as a DL...) Also, I want more than just Die Another Day and The World Is Not Enough for Bond movies... Come on MGM!!!! Step it up!!!!

personally until they lighten up the movie service i dont want to even try it.

i bought 4 movies from them, that's almost $60 i spent then my system Ylod's
Luckily i backed them up into my HDD then get a new PS3, i put them in and none of them work. i cant re-download them from the downloads list the same way i do with my PSN games so basically i have to re-buy them again which i refuse to do and i refuse to continue buying from that service. ill just wait and buy my bluray or dvd discs

Digital distribution sucks

I had a similar thing happen with me except I was just upgrading to a larger hard drive.

Games were fine, movies not so much.

You can actually get them working again. Call up Sony, tell them what happened with the YLOD, and they can reset the activation and let you be able to re-download your movies. As long as you can prove you are the account owner it should be fine.

Games are allowed to be activated on up to 5 PS3's, but movies are only allowed on 1, so that is probably what is happening.

Everything should be for rent and cheaper. TV shows for a buck (15 minute shows for .50) and HD movies for 3. I get more for my money by using netflix with the current pricing.

As a Canadian. F YOU Sony and Netflix on this one.

Don't worry we'll end up getting it in Canada shortly before PS4 comes out.

There are plenty of things wrong with the PlayStation Video Store. One of the most glaring is the DRM nonsense. One has to pay way more than one should for the digital copy and if your harddrive fails or you accidentally delete the movie you're out of luck. Another issue I have with these downloadable movies is that they don't include any special features. Therefore, you're paying the same amount of money for a product that is locked into your PS3/PSP, can be easily lost forever, and you're getting no extras.

Cool, now it just needs to expand to more european countries ;)

I hate sony, they ALWAYS stiff Canada. First with the comics and now this!
