Microsoft took yet another step today in convincing us that Windows Phone 7 will be a legitimate gaming platform. The company just unveiled XNA Game Studio 4.0, which, in addition to supporting PC and Xbox 360, will also let designers make games for the new mobile platform. Besides being great news for indies, it also means that you'll be able to use your gamertag and Avatar on the phone, as well as unlock Xbox Live Achievements.
You can read more about the technical integration of XNA and WP7 on Microsoft program manager Michael Klucher's blog. Hopefully we'll have even more details for you as the tech is rolled out during GDC.

Same my upgrades available in May. I think I'm going to wait for this to try out and if it doesn't work out I'll go with the Droid...

weakest like graphically and complexity wise? not the case. Windows Phone 7 Series has what they call a "Chasis" minimum spec standards. all WP7 phones have to have at least a 1GHz processor and hardware acceleration. i believe the Zune HD only uses an 800MHz Tegra processor, meaning it just got leapfrogged.

Actually he said that Zune wont get it . Its only 3.1 for ZuneHD which is disappointing for me.

The handset doesn't look very expensive, I think they'll hit a low price point with it simply to get people on board.

The chatter on the xna developers blog seems to strongly be saying ZuneHD is not supported in XNA 4.0. They we're boasting on how quickly 3.1 apps can be ported to 4.0 but it's not by chance they specifically left out the ZuneHD as a supported platform in the press release. I'm really disappointed as I bought one thinking I would see some iTouch competition, but it looks like they have immediately lost interest in the ZuneHD

The press release advertised, as one of the "features", how you could take most of the code written in XNA 4.0 and back-port it into 3.1 for deployment on a Zune -- which adds fuel to the fire for "no Zune in 4.0" (which they still don't have the gall to come right out and say).
Which really annoys me; I just got a Zune HD, since I figured that's where they would go with any portable gaming initiative. Don't need a new phone, don't want to change phone plans or carriers or spend on an overpriced mobile data plan. Yet it seems like the Zune is about to get shoved into the bottom of Microsoft's unsupported hardware closet...

i have a Zune 80 now and was planning on buying a Zune HD when they got more storage space (going from 80GB to 32GB doesn't make sense for me) but now i'm kind of glad i didn't. technically though, each Windows 7 phone is a Zune also (not unlike each iPhone being an iPod) so maybe they are moving that direction more so and will release a MS branded WP7 device without the phone.
but that arguement has holes in it when you start talking about battery life and such so who knows. wait and see is the best approach now.

I find it sad that Apple iPad news related to gaming is classified as "breaking", while news dedicated to a new gaming platform (and also linked to a major console) is buried. This is a far more interesting device that has a dedicated 3D processor to handle the workload.
But unlike Apple, Microsoft doesn't have blind incompetent fanboys blindly throwing their cash at the company. I for one hope that MS doesn't f**k this up, and that I'll be playing Forza Mobile on my Win7 phone at this time next year.

I regret buying the zune HD as I hear more news on this new windows 7 phone, n nothing new about the zunehd. Had only one update n its like they just stopped supporting it. I mean its a good media player but just feels...boring now. Wonder how long they'll support this phone after it comes out

I don't think you realise, but this is not a handset its a mobile OS. The phone they're showing off is merely the flagship device. So I suspect they'll be supporting it for a while, mate.

Well, this was already known, I mean yesterdays post showed one of the basic xna games being played on the phone, then they showed how easy it was to set the tilt function in visual studios (what xna uses), and how you can select the phone section individually.

I'm torn: I want a WInPh7 game AND a Zune HD. However, WinPh7 basically invalidates the necessity for an HD. HOWEVER, my contract isn't even a year old. Even then, I don't know if I'd even go through with buying the darn thing.
Damn it.
