I'm interested in the PS3/360 ratio. I picked it up for PS3 and while the story is top notch the battle system seems very FF-Lite.

I'm only 7 hours in and I would agree its very FF-lite. But I can see it getting really deep later on.

I just wish I could set up my own auto-attack routines and macros for myself and my partners (sort of like the gambit system but for FF13 battle system). Only workaround I've found is go to settings set the default battle button to abilities. this way you can easily click into abilities set up a quick macro of abilities, then just hit right to do repeat. change if necessary rinse and repeat.

also I have a heck of a time rapidly pressing my fingers shifting my paradigm around trying to stagger enemies. its definitely a refreshing change to rpg battle system, yet it still has that classic feel to it.

also I agree the story so far is really good it feels like they are building up towards something really epic. It gets really interesting (or at least makes waaaay more sense) if you read the DataLogs.

Ya, I agree about setting things up. I'm coming off of WKC and I enjoyed the combo system it used. I loved FFXII's Gambit system, it was pretty deep and I felt like I was in control of what happened. Only controlling one character and constantly having to shift between offensive/defensive positions on the fly in FFXIII seems like they're attempting to add artificial depth.

The 360 version wasn't released at all in Japan, so all 2M is pure Ps3

I'm 7 hours in as well and I'm definitely digging the story. My only complaints so far are the lack of a "gambit" system (ala FFXII), the camera getting very wonky in tight spaces, and the length of the first few "dungeons". After a really great opening few hours, it's frustrating to spend so much time navigating the crystal ocean pictured above while craving the next tidbit of plot development.

For having such fast-paced combat and cutscenes, you'd hope for less grind.

Not exactly. The retail survey found that an unethical shop owner took two copies of Final Fantasy XI, scrawled two more I's on the end of the title, and sold them to gullible customers.

I dont know. I absolutly hated the gambit system of XII because it was to simple to put them all on gambits and let the game play its self. The new system I like because it means you have to be attentive (well I do) you cant keep them all in relentless when your facing a very powerful person and have to switch to the other paradim on the fly to heal/cast buffs. I'm still in the ocean (due to having a crappy job) and the metal spark things I always have to switch to synth/saboteur role before switching to relentless or tri attack paradims due to its mass of health and it makes the fights more involving

My guess is ALL of those will be sold within a month...

and I'm willing to bet that the PS3 version may just barely outsell the 360 version in the US & EU.....

The 360 version wasn't even in the top 10 of video game sales at Amazon, until the '360 only' commercials started airing.

Then it started creeping up and actually hit #3 by the time the game released. Looks like the advertising was helping, a bit. You'd think Sony would actually advertise FFXIII of all things, but... I guess not.

For whatever reason Square Enix is in Microsoft's pocket so they made a deal to let FF13 be advertisements to be only for the 360 with no hint of the Ps3, To be honest I don't understand their love affair with Microsoft this generation, they've released a bunch of mediocre- bad RPGs for the system that haven't sold well yet they still are trying to make it big with the 360

Julian,

SE views MS as it's gateway to the North American crowd, that's what I've decided. You're right, they've released quite a few duds that have yet to attract the 360 fan base and SE still continues to support them blindly.

The XBOX 360 ads for Final Fantasy XIII are no different than the equally numerous multiplatform games that only showed the Playstation logo at the tail end of the commercials (like Batman: Arkham Asylum and others). It isn't a conspiracy people...it's business and Microsoft and Sony equally benefit from it.

They see the console total numbers for the 360 in the US and want to get a piece of that action. This however is a mistake, because the people who play 360 are not interested in the kind of games Square Enix is making.

WTF are you talking about? Square has a deep relationship with sony, and are finally starting to branch out to a new console for their bread and butter. MS probably paid for the FF13 commercials, which means free advertising for Square, and MS gets to get the message out that Square is finally supporting their system, win-win. Its not like Square went out of their way to advertise the product and hide the fact that it is also on the PS3, which you seem to be implying.

if Square was "in MS's pocket" then it would be an exclusive or at least available in japan on the 360. They would have done a lot better on the 360 port if they were in MS's pocket as well.

It would make sense that many MP games would choose to put the 360 logo at the end, with XBL and all.

There are still plenty of games with the PS3 logo at the end though. Big games, too. Didn't AC2 have the PS3 logo at the end?

You guys are funny. It's not about the logo at the end of the commercial. This is big business and these are exclusive marketing campaigns purchased for these titles. Sony did it with EA Sports and Assassins Creed 2 while Microsoft has done it with games like Call of Duty MW 2 and Final Fantasy 13. No one is in anyones pocket simply because of the exclusive advertising package, thats just saving and making the publisher money for an marketing campaign they no longer have to pay for.

Yeah...no bias there. LOL, is MS a major shareholder in Gamestop as well or something?

so if 3M are outside Japan, means 2M were sold for the Ps3 in Japan and if we will assume that it's selling evenly right now it would bring grand total of
3.5M Ps3
1.5M 360

Assuming it's even of course

Any kind of numbers on the 360 will be great. This has been basically a PS game, many PS3's were bought for this game. Then there is the visual advantage on the PS3. I don't think it will surprise anyone that it sells more on PS3.

" Of course, Square Enix isn't saying how many of those copies have been sold, so bear that in mind when marveling over these impressive numbers."

Except for Square-Enix, shipped IS sold. They games are sold to the retailers. Always hated that arguement of "shipped =/= sold", because it implies that the numbers are imaginary or something. Profit is had by the company either way. And if you're trying to equate sales to quality or consumer interest... Let us remember Ico, Indigo Prophecy, Psychonaughts, or Beyond Good & Evil.

Dude, you should get both! Eternal Sonata is such a good RPG and it's Chopin!

However, if you have to pick one, get FFXIII. It's just more content for your $60.

IF you own a 360, I would recommend Tales of Vesperia. I was really hoping this game would have released on the PS3 in North America, but they recently announced that it won't. Sad. IMO, that is the greatest RPG of the current gen systems. I am enjoying FFXIII as well though. I just liked the freedom Vesperia gave me. And the "airship." That helped too.

Despite the cries of WRPG fanboys, there's a great deal of JRPG variety out there and sampling the critically-acclaimed is truly the best way to break into the genre. Good luck finding your niche and please, for the sake of the internet, don't let your exposure to Japanese gaming turn you into a weeaboo. We have enough of those already.

@Markz

Until the introduction of the Paradigm system 5-6 hours in, you can get through every encounter pressing X/A. For the next few hours you have to hit L1/LB every now and then, but yeah, no joking around there.

The game is utterly fantastic in those initial 6-7 hours though and there's plenty of promise for the gameplay to get more complex soon, so I would still recommend you pick it up. Not doing so for the noob-friendly first few hours would be a mistake.
