I never know what to think of these statements. It could be complete PR BS until E3 and they announce a new console. Then again, I can totally see Nintendo riding the wave as long as they can...

Didn't Perrin Kaplan say something about there not being a new DS like literally the day before the DS Lite got announced?

No, the DS lite denial was about a week before it was announce.
You're thinking of the DSi, which was publicly denied ~18 hours before it was announced.

Regardless, we all know Nintendo won't make enough of the "next console" to stretch out the demand over 2 years and disappoint kids for months after christmas. Nothing to get excited about here.

If anything (which is unlikely this year, maybe next) it would be just an announcement with more than a year before any kind of launch. You can't just throw a console out the gates, developers need time to create a strong launch lineup.

Funny, Reggie, that directly contradicts what your R&D guys have said. Right after they launch a product, they immediately set about making it better.

Like he knows....he is too far down the food chain to know shit yet....

no way in hell Nintendo doesn't have the Wii successor in R&D by now....at the very least if its not past the drawing board it will be by the end of the year....

Nintendo can't possibly think that it will be able to keep the Wii in its current form going strong past next summer....the market is getting highly saturated and they are going to have to do something to keep consoles going....

Nintendo has to make a decision. Are they going to go after the Wii audience with a new console, or return to the hardcore audience?

If they go with the hardcore, people will buy it because it's a new Nintendo console. But if they focus on the Wiidence, they have the challenge of making those people see the need to upgrade.

Given that they obviously didn't care about HD in the first place, just making WiiHD won't cut it.

I think "President of Nintendo's Second-Largest Worldwide Branch" is actually fairly high up the food chain. Maybe not at the top, but pretty high up.

Also, Chris D, my man, you really do need to discover the joy of using plain and simple periods. Not every sentence needs to be punctuated with ellipses to have an impact - I know, crazy right?

The issue with the upgrade that i think a lot of people aren't getting is that the casuals are easy, this is the problem with casuals, but also their great benefit

To get the casuals to upgrade, Nintendo doesn't need to create value. All they need to get the casuals to upgrade is one dynamite must-have title. That one title might be multiple titles, but it only takes one must-have to get a casual to jump

Certainly they cannot depend on their current audience to just buy the N6 just because it's the next Nintendo console, but it should be easier for them to bring the casuals back (again, this is in comparison to the core, where you have to create "value" which involves a lot of software and features and stuff)

I really hope they dont release a Wii HD? My launch Wii with component cables looks just fine on my 42in 1080p hdtv and 1080p projector I just got. If they announce a system at E3 it better be the Wii 2 or DS 2, no little upgrade but a full brand new system.

That doesn't sound like Nintendo to me...

From what I understand, Nintendo always started work on R&D for the next big system, right after the current system was released.

When the SNES came out, they got cracking on "Project Reality", and when the N64 came out, "Dolphin".

Also, what's with this quote:
"So when people talk about high definition for the Wii console, our feedback is that that by itself will not create a brand new experience. Therefore, we're not interested."

To be frank, HD doesn't add to the experience, it merely enhances it. Today, standard definition has been spoilt by High definition, it's harder to immerse people with HD visuals. You can't shrug HD off Nintendo, not any more.

He didn't say they weren't researching and prototyping ideas.

The DS and Wii have helped define what Nintendo means by "game experience" -- Online, DLC, portable form factor, controller options have a greater impact on how we experience gaming than visuals.

But, look, who really expects Reggie to say that Nintendo is going to release a new console? Especially in a freaking Forbes interview? The takeaway point here is that Nintendo isn't going to release a new console that has just HD. When Nintendo announces a Wii replacement, it will have HD but also some other features to make it stand out.

Not to worry. The Market will certainly will reward (read: punish) Nintendo for their short-sightedness. (Recall the N64, and Gamecube?)

Lack of HD (or other obvious Features) in the next console will not go unnoticed. Even if the games for it turn out to be spectacular.

I know I shouldn't let it irk me, but I hate Reggie's smug remarks sometimes.

5th gen pokemon does seem to indicate that they may be putting out some sort of new hardware soon, or they may be counting DSi as that new hardware (much like there were 2 Pokemon entries on the original Game Boy, but the latter were Game Boy Color compatible)

I'm not sure. My bet was 2011, and that could still be the case, given that Gold and Silver came out only a year before the Game Boy Advance rolled around. And if Pokemon 5 is analogous to Gold and Silver, then the next handheld could be 2011 as well...

What evidence is there that the recession has made any difference? Sales are great (especially if you're Nintendo). How many pictures of Scrooge's money bin do we need?

Beyond which, consoles have traditionally been launched during bad economic times. The Atari age was launch in the dark economic days of the late-70s early-80s. The SNES/Genesis fight began during the early 90s recession. The PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era began during the 01 recession.

It's funny. I read this headline: Nintendo not thinking seriously...

Because I am/was a Nintendo fan, this pretty much sums up my disappointment with their lackluster attitude toward the core gamer this generation. Plus, Reggie is so full of PR BS that I rarely learn anything from his interviews.

@TwEE, I think my comment could apply to both, but I had Nintendo core gamer in mind (not the casual group).

I am a Nintendo fan, but find myself less of one each day because I am disappointed with things that gamers come to expect these days: voice chat as a system standard for every game, better online support, and as Chris Grant points out that online purchases are tied to the console itself and not an account (like PSN and XBL).

So says Mr. Fils Aime.

I imagine they definitely are actively working pretty damn hard on the new console, but from a marketing standpoint I don't think it'd make much sense to start doling out details to the masses. Why take focus off what you're currently doing when the next console is still aways off...

Reggie is a liar giving politician speak. The progression cycle works in the way Iwata stated it worked several years ago BEFORE Wii was launched. It's clearly visible to the public how they approach innovation.

Console introduction - next cycle is control revision with added processing power.

NES to SNES

N64 then refine to Gamecube pad.

Wii...next cycle ?????(my guess is rechargable remotes with better motion detection and a better speaker with a ... mic ! (gasp) and refined button placement as well as overall design to fit the hand better, expect it to be ergonomic.)

This was an open admission by Iwata back in 2005 in Nintendo Power, when he also said that if Wii did not sell much much better than Cube - it would be deemed a failure.

It should be a refinement in the motion controls without reinventing the wheel with more horsepower under the hood - given this is N that would mean an increase of 3MHz and maybe 10 extra megglebits of memory.

Maybe they have changed their philosophy - I doubt it, though vast amounts of bells have been known to make people go crazy and fly into light bulbs until they die.

Working with Reggies statement... Certainly one could come up with plenty of ideas that the Wii can't do and that would spark R&D into hardware.

You could start with anything (pretty much) being done on the next gen systems as something the Wii can't do - that should start plenty of hardware R&D as well as flame wars amoungst the fanbois. Advanced processing power yields more than pretty graphics.

Nintendo needs to be careful lest they lose all their old customer base by making very radical jumps in approach to games, unless they are going for complete transformation and will eventually not be viewed as a video game company in the traditional sense we think of currently.

He's thinking about whether or not Nintendo should just sell their next console directly through EBay and avoid the middle man. Their ads will feature Reggie standing in front of a stack of consoles in his underwear while holding a posterboard with his username scrawled on it.
