Rebellion has allegedly let go approximately 20 staff from its main studio in Oxford, UK, while its Derby location has been shut down, reports Develop. Rebellion, which most-recently released Aliens vs Predator, has yet to confirm the details
As is typical with these types of stories, it's hard to tell if the layoffs were part of the natural game development cycle after a major release, or if there's an actual "issue" going on. As for the Derby studio, which once upon a time was Core Design (Tomb Raider), it has been on the chopping block for months. If you are a member or representative of the studio, please don't hesitate to contact us (whether on or off the record) with clarification.

Pardon my honesty, but is anyone else sick of hearing about situations like this? Who does this news really help? Just reminds me that our economy sucks and that every industry is being affected. Give us something to be happy about joystiq, enough with the firings.

I'm sure those affected are tired of hearing it.
It does help to know that the glitzy world of game making has a REAL side to it. How many years were we fed the tag lines "turn you passion into a career"?
You are a resource ultimately. You are cut at a whim.
It ain't all games...ironically.

I've worked in the game industry for the better part of 5 years, and news like this keeps it real. The game industry is vicious and news like this is only a reminder that we have to be on top of the game.

Sounds like the predators found some new prey.

I didn't play their latest game but I can't help but wonder if the cut would have happened if they would have been more successful in terms of sales and overall review scores. I think this is 1 part economy and 1 part result of poor ROI. Doesn't change the fact that 20 hard working people are without jobs tomorrow and that has an effect on them as well as those around them. I wish them well and hope they bounce back quickly as it's never easy to be let go.

I live in derby and I got to say it's crap feel sorry for everyone working in the derby branch as there's no work for a games designer in derby so they have to move or leave the industry all together :(
