The Secret of Monkey Island 2: Special Edition announced for XBLA, PSN, PC, iPhone

At a pirate-themed party in San Francisco tonight (with special guests Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer!) LucasArts announced The Secret of Monkey Island 2: Special Edition, coming "this summer" on Xbox Live Arcade, PSN, PC, iPhone and iPod Touch. This isn't simply the same "special edition" treatment applied to last year's edition; instead, fans can expect a new control mechanism. "In addition to the point-and-click interface, we've added the ability to move Guybrush around, so you feel more connected to him," said LucasArts' Craig Derrick, project lead on all Monkey Island products. They've also added never-before-seen art from Peter Chan and Steve Purcell and developer commentary (!) for you Monkey Island fanboys out there (that's you).

Of course, that's in addition to all the stuff you'd expect from the special edition treatment, including high-definition art, remastered music, full voiceover track, and the ability to swap between original and "special edition" modes. Derrick even said they've "reimagined" each character, citing fan displeasure with Guybrush's hair in the first special edition. Really? We liked his hair ...

I never played the original Monkey Island way back when, but had an absolute blast with the special edition. I'll be getting this for sure ;)

The hair is far from the only visual thing that put me off the first SE.

Ahem... 'Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge'. Not 'The Secret of Monkey Island 2'. However, I don't know where the 'Special Edition' bit goes.

HELL YES. I have beaten every Monkey Island except 2! I played it but got stuck, then lost my save file when my Windows 95 crashed, and I gave up.

This will be awesome!

So far 3 has always been my fave but I hear this one's awesome.

Oh, thank heavens. Guybrush's hair design in the remake made me cry tears.

Ok, first of all, AWESOME. I loved the first SE and I'll love this one more. I was actually just thinking about how cool a remake of MI2 would be today.

But when they mention new control scheme, allowing us to control Guybrush, I think of the controls of Tales of Monkey Island, and that... worries me.

I can't wait to make a HD voodoo doll of LeChuck.
Let's hope the hairstyle change is for the better. The SE haircut really didn't work for me (What about the beard he had in MI2? Will it return?).
I didn't like some faces in the first one. For me the lookout and the shopkeeper had funny faces in the original game, not the serious ones they drew on the SE version.
Also, they lost the part of the Loom joke (the "advertisement" flashing).

Now if only we could have an option to have de voice with the classic version...

Damn, just saw the screenshots. The guy at the dry-cleaner didn't have glasses. Just bad sight and huge eye brows.

This makes me sad :'(

Oh hell of a yes, I thought all the silence had meant the first one hadn't done well enough. Very pleased to heard about this. I hope 3 & 4 follow and maybe we could get Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle etc too, pretty please...

Yes! Monkey Island 2 is my favourite in the series, and the art style looks great.

Now let's just hope there's a Curse of Monkey Island: SE with the same graphics just cleaned up for HD. That's what I want the most.

yup they need to remake number 4 as well

as in have the orignal makers of mi1 make mi4 XD

I don't think there exists hi-res backgrounds for Curse of Monkey Island.

I've beaten all 5 Monkey Island games. I love them all and It's hard to choose a favorite, but MI2 was REALLY good.
