That's pretty insignificant, especially with that 70MB they've freed up.

They should be able to toss all Move calculations to one SPU, right?

Unfortunately that 70MB was fantasy born of lausy reporting bu Joystiq bloggers.

120MB OS was !newer! used on any sold consoles, some early developer kits in alpha/beta stage might but "1.0" was 96MB
In 2006 on PS3 premiere OS took 96MB and some games shiped with first firmware update that lowered it by 8MB to 88MB.

In first half of 2007:
"First, the base memory footprint of the PS3 OS in main memory has been reduced from 56 MB to 52 MB. These values will lead to some confusion, as we've previously reported that the memory footprint was 64 MB. 8MB of memory was given back to developers sometime before Christmas, and now a further 4 MB has been returned. Currently, as of SDK 1.60, the PS3 operating system takes up 52 MB of main memory and 32 MB of graphics memory (84 MB total). As a comparison, the Xbox 360 still only uses 32 MB of shared memory for all its system utilities."

The 1.80 SDK has been in developers’ hands for a few weeks, and we can now report on the latest progress of the Sony system utilities and their memory usage. On this front, the 1.80 release has been nothing but good news for developers (and indirectly, consumers). This release heralds both a slew of new features, and, as anticipated, improved memory consumption.
First, both the main memory and graphic memory footprints have been reduced, reaching a new low of 48MB and 24MB respectively. That’s a 12MB reduction since the 1.60 release. The extra memory is sure to be welcome by developers.
etc.

OS was in 60-some MB or under since probably late 2007...

I just hope it doesn't go the same way as the Wii did, I don't think it will.

Eh, people are cautious. We're entering a new 1990s phase of peripherals. If you recall, or better yet just pick up a GamePro or EGM from that period (92-95 are the sweet spot years), you'll notice a lot of consoles. I mean, a shit ton. And an equal amount of peripherals.

You'll also notice how "stupid" gamers were then. Well, less jaded I guess. They gave favorable ratings to the Sega CD, 32X, 3D0, Jaguar, CDi, etc. while all the same casting doubt on "Project Reality" and this new fangled system called the Play Station. Of course, after all but two of those bombed they became wiser and are more recognizable from today's breed of gamers.

In short, game companies lie through their teeth and almost NEVER FULLY deliver on promises. I think it's wise to approach this new generation of motion control with caution and a barrel of salt. It's about the games and the Wii has proven that programmers don't know what they're doing yet. Much like how it was when 3D gaming was just starting. (Will gaming be called 4D once they support "3D" television?)

@Massmass

It's 2010. What happened 15 years ago won't happen in the same way. Many things have changed since the mid 90's. First of all, back when the consoles you mentioned were in play, there was a total of 11 consoles in the market (including the console add- ons such as Sega CD and 32x). That was in the mid 1990's when the second huge factor comes into play: the market. Video Games back then were toys. We hadn't gone into the mainstream expansion they got since the PS1. Only hardcore gamers and kids had an idea of what video games were. Parents would still call playing games as "playing Nintendo". Right now the markets are different. Everyone but the dog know what Playstation, or Wii, or Xbox means. Not only has the mainstream market expanded since 1996 but now it has grown even more thanks to the casual market. After all, back in the day the gaming industry was far from surpassing the film industry in revenues. Now they do.

Yes, an add- on may still fail these days, but unlike the time period you mentioned, the lifespan will be much longer and its demise won't affect the parent platform because there is an installed base that is enormous no matter what. Think that what the PS3 has in installed base in third place this generation is probably two to three times what Sega and Nintendo had combined at the beginning of the 90's.

I'm with you Den-69,

I'm pretty happy to see where this goes without the avalanche of craptacular games that came out for the Wii. You have to applaud Nintendo for bringing something truly innovative though and leading the way for things like true 1:1 tracking. Don't get me wrong, I like the motion plus for the added tracking ability but I dislike having to recalibrate my controller in the middle of a sword match.

I'm pretty keen on the whole "Move" thing and in my opinion, I think "Move" is a much better name than Arc or Playstation Motion Controller (PMC). It's quick and easy to say, easy to remember and conveys what the product will get you to do. Smart choice on their part.

I was disappointed that they didn't show more games (any) yesterday that took advantage (or showed off in a demo way) that this system can do the body tracking/facial recognition. They mentioned it last year at E3 and now at GDC but are not showing anyone DOING it.

nah, if i can get the eye and controller/nunchuck for under $100 I'll get it for Resident Evil alone...

.. and if more FPS games adopt the control scheme, bonus!

Seriously, this makes FPS games much better, imo. When I used t ohave a Wii, i used to dominate RE4 and Metroid like no other FPS game and only wished it would come out for games that released on Xbox and PS3...

that being said, i am curious to see how Natal handles games like these.. I'm pretty imaginative but I don't see how it would work without buttons. But from my understanding, you can still use a controller while using Natal?

One would hope, since I don't think Natal recognizes your skeleton down to the phalanges.

But how would that even work? If you're standing up using the control pad, why don't you just sit down? And if you're sitting down, why bother having a camera checking to see if you move? You're not going to be doing couch acrobatics, are you?

1-2MB is nathan. Looking foward to all this goodness when it drops. I always thought the Wii blew it with me with antiquated graphics and a console that is mostly motion focused. Now with HD and a console that already is "classicaly based in gaming" with the addition of Wii type gameplay and thensome, this should be something to lure me in. Unfortunately, my nephew may feel a little jealous when he sees that my PS3 can do what the Wii does but even better.

You don't know that this will work better than the Wii. Have you used it yet? So far I haven't seen anything that the Move thing does that Motion Plus cannot.

And as far as graphics, does it really matter? the Wii's graphics are more than good enough.

Jimbotron - While you're right that I have not played it, based on all the feedback from not only E3 2009 but from the GDC where there has been actual hands on usage by gaming website writers/editors, the 1:1 response ratio of the Move has more than been confirmed which is better than the Wii Motion Plus, in that regard, already. You are only looking at vids where as they have actually PLAYED with the Move and they have given their feedback.

Now, the fact that the PS3 is a powerhouse of a console compared to the outhouse of a console the Wii seems to be, in comparison, I don't think creating games to better utilize the Move tech as opposed to the "nunchuk tech" will be an issue.

As for graphics, to each his own. MY preference is to have games with great graphics. I started play videogames before whoever gave birth to you probably even met so for a person coming from the days of Pong then Atari and Colecovision, I don't want a relapse in graphics. What the PS3/360 offer is something I only dreamed of as a kid, never knowing we'd actually arrive at this moment and not that it is, I don't want to go backwards...but that's just me. If YOU don't have a prob with it, that's fine but I do and that's apart of why the Wii didn't get my dough.
