Surprise! Major MMOs cost batty-bonkers-cuckoo amounts of money to produce. Eurogamer reports that Electronic Arts CFO Eric Brown said as much today, describing Star Wars: The Old Republic as the "largest ever development project, period, in the history of the company." EA is apparently betting big on having something like Activision Blizzard's World of Warcraft with The Old Republic. Brown guesstimates that WoW cost about $100 million to launch back in 2004 -- the game makes something like that now in a month.
The executive explained that the average game costs about $30 million to produce, but that "any MMO costs significantly more than that." With an expected spring 2011 release, hopefully EA will start making a return at that time on its investment in a galaxy far, far away. Otherwise, the gaping maw of the Rancor would be preferable to what investors will do.

what would make you say that? It says right in the article WoW cost a hundred million dollars to make and that still sold at retail for 50 with only a 15 monthly subscription

If I ever fall off the wagon and go back to playing an MMO, this might be the one that does it.

Im right there with you in that regard. Ive avoided every MMO like the plague knowing it would kill my time (and some money) but i dont know if i can avoid this one its like the perfect storm for me Star Wars, MMO, Basically Kotor3, i can only hope it sucks and isnt worth the money as it seems that is all that can save me from it.

I really do hope that this game will succeed. Not only due to my love of most things Star Wars, but because EA has not been doing too well. Maybe its the management's fault, or maybe its just the market, but I don't want the company who just gave us Mass Effect 2 and Dead Space to disappear.

I think it's pretty much gauranteed to be a smashing success. WoW is remarkable because, though Warcraft had fans, they were mostly RTS fans, because Warcraft was an RTS up until WoW. And the universe, though developed somewhat in the games, had never been the subject of anyone's obsession, that I know of. But Star Wars is the ultimate license, there are people who live, eat, and breathe star wars. There are star wars weddings. Warcraft never had that before its launch, and I think that the intensity of Warcraft fandom is still lukewarm compared to the white hot love that Star Wars has had going for it since its release several decades ago. Not only that, but Bioware created KOTOR, an amazing RPG experience that left its mark on a generation of gamers (this being the lucrative generation who is now 24-39 or whatever the magical age is). I can't say whether TOR will kill WoW, but I know it's going to kick ass and bring home the bacon.

Well you've got a point to there. Star Wars does not equal auto win. There have been lots of Star Wars fails, including the prequel trilogy (though it was a win in terms of money). Fortunately, Bioware is essentially improving on a proven model. KOTOR, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect all worked similarly, with hub areas leading to mission instances, in depth stories, lots of characters, etc. TOR is taking that and making it MASSIVE, with a jillion different story paths, lots of character customization options, AND online multiplayer. So TOR has a very solid game company working with a very solid idea, AND it has Star Wars. That's going to be a big win no matter how you slice it.

In my opinion, the success of WoW was what you spoke of, but there are many other things that it did that SWTOR may not. The best example I can think of is my friend got myself and about five or six other friends to join. Another group of people I graduated with did the exact same, there's 12 subscribers right there. They tell their friends, etc.
My point is that SWTOR may be an excellent MMO with many Star Wars fans, but their friends might not dig it as much as they do. You also have people who are already involved in WoW / some other MMO, and don't want to invest in two monthly subscriptions. And you can't forget people who say they hate leveling and don't want to do it again, as they already have an 80 on WoW.
I'm very tired so I apologize for my terrible sentence structure and layout haha...

This game looks really mediocre right now, from a visual standpoint. Gameplay looks alright, and I love the multiplayer dialogue system. I'm sure Bioware's writing team will not disappoint, either. But the art needs a total makeover, IMO.
