Perhaps the same could be said of all downloadable content.

If you don't see what I did there, you can't come to my birthday anymore.

You could certainly say the same about DLC largely just being selling a brand, sure. However I'd say it differs in that it's extra content at the same quality of the original rather than a "cheap port," which is a pretty significant difference.

But the of course we do have stuff like that upcoming DLC Lara Croft game that close the gap more. Though you're still getting more than anything those Tiger games ever were.

The App Store was called forth by non-gamers who wished to pay it tribute.

@Richard 2.6: You make some valid points, friend. I believe DLC has a lot of potential, as does the App Store, but it will take more effort on the parts of companies to really get the most out of it. You get an invite to my birthday because you weren't a raving madman who read too much into what I said. :D ...I'm far too used to other sites on the internet.

As for the rest of you, you are all invited to my birthday as per the conditions.

I know so many people with an iPhone that don't play games, but they'll have tons of terrible apps loaded on there that they always want to show everyone. People just buy random junk because they think it's so cheap (well, not at $349.99) and it doesn't matter to them.

They just buy a lot of this crap for Zits & Giggles.

A friend of mine bought some kinda Star Wars app that makes lightsaber sounds whenever she moves her iPhone. Not sure if she had to pay for it or not, but she was sure happy to show it off.

People will sometimes buy very expensive products b/c they assume it is sold at a high price b/c it is high quality. It's one of the shortcuts the brain uses to make decision-making easier.

"My conclusion to all of this is that the people who you're selling to on the App Store are not necessarily gamers."

Ya think?

This whole idea is ridiculous. The App store is a victim of its own success. Any large scale, universal on-line service is going to end up with a disporportionate amount of crappy things to good things. People will always be interested in simple, novel and (most importantly) *cheap* gimmicks (I'm sure this doesn't apply to the one person who bought this game for $299, probably thinking it was $2.99). As much as I may criticize Apple I can't blame any of this on the App Store itself.

No instant smash singles, but very consistent. Overall great vibe. 'Sweepstakes' can burn in hell, though.

On that note. Jesus. I've had the same avatar since Joystiq introduced the feature a few years back.

No matter how many times I try to upload my avatar, it won't change. I've tried 2 different computer with various browser. No jazz. It's the right size and file format.

Maybe Joystiq just hates Macs. Can't say I blame them; we're definitely a bunch of douchebags. I do most of my posting at Starbucks. When people ask me what I'm doing, I tell them I'm writing a screenplay. When they ask me what it's about, I say it's a character piece making social commentary about the duality of man. If they ask to see it, I tell them I'm writing the entire thing in French, because American audiences couldn't handle the profound truths I bring to light. Then I take a sip of my latte and spit it out on those peasants.

Cool story, I know.

"I'm sure this doesn't apply to the one person who bought this game for $299"

14 people bought it at $299, not 1.

Via Gamasutra:

After observing that fortuitous trend, Refenes decided to test its resilience by boosting the game's selling price every time at least one copy was sold.

"I stopped paying attention to it for a while," he recalled, then "I checked it on Valentine's Day, and 14 people bought it at $299."

My response is simple:

"The people you're selling to ARE BUYING YOUR PRODUCT."

Who gives a shit if they're "gamers" if they're giving you money?

because the more non-gamers spend money, the more companies flood the market non-games.

and in releasing more non-games, we see a rise in non-gamers.

and most gamers can't stand that.

the app store lets developers raise the price of its apps with no validation whatsoever?

Or every time they raised the price they re-released it?

That seems odd to me.

There's some truth to this. I bought Super Monkey Ball shortly after the App Store launched. It sucks. I can count on one hand how many times I've played it. The only iPhone game I use on a regular basis is a free Sudoku game, although I will admit that Peggle is pretty good.

The fact is, most of my time on the iPhone is spent using its default apps: Phone, SMS/MMS, iPod, Safari, and Google Maps.

Wait is this guy saying only brand name games sell on the App Store? Don't we hear about "rags to riches" stories like every week? Just a few weeks ago Doodle Jump passed 3 million in sales.

Yeah, I'm kind of tired of people slamming the App Store model or saying the iPhone or iPod touch isn't for games. It's not perfect, but it does allow indie developers to be creative and publish quickly to a wide audience. It's incredibly convenient to have on hand for short gaming sessions. And just because a game's short, doesn't make it bad.

while there are plenty of crap games on the app store, their is huge number of very good content- new content is constant too. If you don't think their are good games on the app store, check out any popcap title(plants v.s zombies, peggle, bookworm, bejeweled, chuzzle), space miner, sword vs. poker, drop7, bird strike, iblast moki, fieldrunners, geodefense, alive 4 ever, tilt to live, mini squadron, astro ranch, rolando, NOVA, Zenonia, jet car stunts, GTA, Monkey Island, and SF IV. THere are tons of very inexpensive quality casual games. On a weekly basis there is a lot more quality content available in the app store than for the PSP and maybe even the DS. Those hand held's do have some top notch content you wont find on the app store like Mario or GoW, but Apple is catching up.

I would say as a sweeping generalisation, sure, the vast majority of iPhone owners are not traditional gamers. Newsflash: that applies to gaming at large. The hardcore is an increasingly tiny fraction of the market. Casual gaming is king.

There are plenty of great games on the iPhone. There will be many more once developers start treating the platform as less of a brand extension. Look at the DS, it started out fairly gimmicking and was a dumping ground for ports, but it also has some intriguing experiences you can't get elsewhere.
