Wow, no kidding. That sound sample you guys recreated had me spooked, definitely. Especially once the harsh noise kicked in. I jumped in my seat.

This man is awesome at his compositions. Ever since the game Smart Ball. His Silent Hill, Gradius III & IV, and Contra: SS stuff is great. Can't wait to hear what he's done in No More Heroes 2.

Quite an interesting field. The different ways our minds process information and fill in blanks, not only for audio but visual as well is pretty crazy.

Cool stuff.

He's actually playing 'Theme Of Laura' the main theme from Silent Hill 2. Akira is a phenomenal composer and will be missed in future Silent Hill installments.

Okay, I really get tired of people saying Yamaoka won't work on future Silent Hill games. He left the company, which means he's independent, which means whether he works on future games depends solely on whether Konami will hire him. He's explicitly said that if he is asked to work on the next Silent Hill game, he will. So I have absolutely no idea where this viral notion that he will never work on the series again comes from.

Akira Yamaoka is amazing. I usually don't listen to game soundtracks, but I keep all the Silent Hill OST's in my car. They're perfect for long drives at night, especially if it's foggy.

Wait, I'm confused. My brain fills in the gaps when I hear the white noise. With the white noise, Fur Elise does not sound interrupted. But with silence, it sounds quite interrupted. Is this what he said at the conference? The brain likes to make sense out of random patterns. This is why we can make out recognizable images out of the shapes of clouds.

When I hear the white noise, my brain tells me that the song never stopped playing and, instead, continues. The white noise is just playing over the song. So is that a misquote or did Yamaoka misspeak?

I assume the jarring pauses in the first rendition are simply a result of the clip being hastily put together by the Joystiq team, since it says in the article that it's not the actual sound sample used by Yamaoka.

There is no objective right and wrong here. Since everyone's mind will interpret the gaps in a different way, the experience is entirely subjective. Personally, I found the noise to be much more jarring than the silence. My mind fills in the silent gaps with the notes I imagine should be there, while I find the noise to be very discomforting.

Other people may have a different experience.

My brain also interpreted the noise-filled sample as having fur elise playing underneath (if it definitely was replaced), but it was still pretty damn unnerving. So Yamaoka still wins this one

Wow, this guy is really a natural when it comes to using music to manipulate viewers' emotions. I can say of just his most recent work on Silent Hill Shattered Memories, the soundtrack FELT "cold", just like the game. The music FELT like running around a frigid, empty town. He really knows what he's doing. I can't wait to see how his new horror game with Suda and Mikami turns out. It's like a combination of all the best minds in the genre.

Ya, I know the Joystiq team put it together. But I don't believe you can insert silent pauses without it being jarring. You could fade them down to silence to minimize the effect of suddenly stopping the music. But I don't think that was the case. I'm assuming that Yamaoka suddenly stopped the music with silent pauses just as Joystiq did and, I hope, the sound of white noise was inserted in the exact same spots where silence occured so that we can accurately evaluate the effect of silence vs white noise.

That makes a lot of sense, if you've ever tried watching a horror movie without sound it's nowhere near as scary. Half the time, whenever the monster/murderer pops out from behind a corner or whatever, you barely even react without whatever ultra loud and high note they hit

Gamasutra has the correct report of this display. The silent gaps are jarring and make for a difficult listening experience. But when white noise is used, our brain fills in the gaps.

I would love to read an interview with Ko Otani and Michiru Oshima on the importance of music. IMO, they knew exactly what they were doing.

Actually, I'd love ANY Team ICO news. I'm dying here.
