Up until now, we hadn't the slightest inclination that Codemasters was hard at work on a third installment in the rallycross racing series, Dirt. According to a recent interview with Edge, though, studio vice prez Gavin Cheshire confirms not only the game's development, but also says, "there's some really great stuff coming from Birmingham that's going into Dirt 3." Cheshire was being interviewed on the subject of Codemasters as one of the last "big British publishers" when he revealed the publisher's development plans for the sequel.
The exec hopes to see more of the company's home of origin (and its culture) leak into the next Dirt game, saying "Dirt 2: brilliant game, but it's all American accents, so maybe we're a little over the top with those ... maybe we should fly the flag a bit more." In addition to this week's announce of Bodycount, that brings the publisher's GDC new game reveals up to two. Will we see more before the week is out? We just dont know.

How exciting. Dirt is a great series. Love the development and improvements they have made from the first to the second. Hopefully they will carry even more into the 3rd. Codemasters has come a long way lately.

I can see where you're coming from with that. Let's just hope we get some steady solid games from them in the future.

@ Sonos - British publishers, not developers. With Eidos now with Square-Enix, I can't name another major British publisher off the top of my head. Rockstar would have been my second pic, but they're by Take 2 who's from New York.
There's certainly no shortage of British devs though.

While I do enjoy Dirt 2 I'd really like them to focus more on actual rally racing this time than the different stunt races that are in the game. Also get rid of the trucks, they're slow...hard to drive and really boring. Tweaking the driving would also help so that everytime I hit a rock my car doesn't bounce 10 feet in the air.
Anyway there's only so much Dirt type racing I can handle, roll on GT5!

I really hope they focus more on the realistic aspects of rally racing this time around. Less showboating and more precision. Less Ken Block and more Colin McRae.

I liked how Dirt 2 tried to portray a race day atmosphere and to illustrate the traveling and exotic locals of rally racing, but I agree with everyone else that they need to move away from the X-Games connections and focus on rally racing. Dirt 1 had far, far better rally courses. Blistering through a tight European rally course is far more exciting than a fictitious London course.
Unfortunately I think that it is a harder sell in the US when solo rallying is something entirely foreign to most Americans.

Hey Codies,
Please go back to the roots Collin McRae Rally games. I think that you've perfected the (Rally) racing game engine in Dirt 2 but I could not stand the whiz bang presentation of the game that seemed targeted at children with ADD. Also, if I want to race redneck trucks, I'll buy a redneck truck racing game.
Collin Mcrae 2005 had the right vibe.

Codemasters has my interest for the first time in awhile. Both Bodycount and Dirt 3 are on my short list.

I'd rather have GRID2 if given a choice. But I guess Dirt sells better since they keep to that series.

Hopefully, they will finally manage to make a split-screen option for PS3/360. It's the most missed major feature in the otherwise brilliant dirt/grid series.

Dirt 3 should have:
Snow and mud tracks,
More rally events,
No stupid trucks
basically, a remake of Colin Mcrae 2005.

I think that pretty much everyone who has commented on this game are all trying to say the same thing. Dirt struck at the true heart of rally racing, while Dirt 2 made it fun and accesible to the masses, and yes, to americans as well. I own and play both games, and I enjoy them both. But when it comes to racing games, it can be a difficult balance. A simulator can recreate an experience that is both challenging and rewarding, while arcade style racing allows those who are unfamiliar with realistic driving physics to enjoy a competative and social experience, while leveling the playing feild against the more skilled racers. But the best games are somewhere in the middle, which is where Codemasters seems to be aiming. Dirt was maybe a little to much a simulator, while Dirt 2 had some rather unnecessary arcade style feature. But I have hope yet that Dirt 3 will find that perfect balance.

P.S. God can only hope that Codemasters will read these comments and take them to heart.
