Liked Battle Chess? Meet Battle vs. Chess

Battle vs. Chess appears to bring Battle Chess to a new generation, with a similar hook and a name that just skirts a potential copyright lawsuit. With "upbeat combat visuals & mechanics," the game sounds like a modern update of the classic chess game that let us watch chess pieces beat the stuffing out of each other. There don't appear to be any videos showing BvC's animations. The real draw of the original Battle Chess was each piece had a unique way of dispatching its foe -- a modern update would hopefully have more varied animations.

The title is being developed for several platforms, including PC, Mac, DS, Wii and Xbox 360. Battle vs. Chess touts that it uses the Fritz! chess algorithm software and it is currently making moves for a May 2010 release.

This just makes me think that I would really like a digital version of Knightmare Chess, that would be way cooler than an updated Battle Chess.

Battle Chess was less about "battles" and more about humor... I hope this retains some humor. King throwing a bomb into a knight, Queen making a pawn "dance" with sparks of lightning, a Rook that is like a cross between Meatwad and the Thing.... man, Battle Chess had it all.

I have so many fond memories of playing the old school battle chess off a floppy disk back when i was just a wee lad.

If they keep it cheep and campy I'm sold.

This makes me feel so old. I used to play battlechess on mac classics in high school.

Hope the animations are varied and fun... because apart from chess itself, that's the only thing going for this game :)

I just played battlechess yesterday (on a dos emulator on my nintendo ds XD)

I lost the game to a pawn :(

The animation of a pawn beating the king was hilarious though!

I agree. There's no excuse for that when the search system here is absolutely horrible. I have better luck googling a Joystiq article than finding it with the search system here...

...so, do the pieces slaughter each other?

They should go full-retail and include more skins or sets. For example: Dead or Alive, Killzone (on PS3), Halo (on Xbox), Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid (PS3) ... that sort of thing. Would make it far more interesting IMO ...

Battle Chess was the shit.
Awesome graphics and animation for the time - really showed off what the Commodore Amiga could do versus the far inferior PCs of the time. Hope that this Battle vs Chess game is even 1/2 as fun.
