"singing karaoke with dates from hostess clubs"

Actually, they're dates that just stand around in Smile Burger (the equivalent of Burger King) for no apparent reason, thanks to a baffling, subpar localization.

(Still a damn fun game, but it really stings when the cuts are so readily apparent.)

I ordered this from Amazon when it was in my Gold Box, so I got it for 52 no tax, free shipping etc. I really loved Yakuza 2 and I hope that SEGA brings Yakuza 4 to the US. I'm not some hardcore Otaku or anything so them cutting some stuff doesn't bother me too much (although I'd really rather they hadn't). I could have waited till the price went down, but I felt Sega deserved my money for taking a risk and releasing a game that might not sell great to a US audience. I was one of the people hoping they would localize it, so I would feel hypocritical not picking it up. Glad to see the reviews are pretty good also.

I am really shocked about the scores because based on the demo I played and all the trailers I've seen (including the Giant Bomb quicklook) seems to show this game being a generic, wanna be, mad japanese, version of GTA (which I guess is the appeal).

I guess it's also important to note that I have a negative opinion on the franchise since playing the first game, since I thought that game was pretty terrible.

I tried the demo, but having never played the series before, I just didn't get it. It's kind of a brawler, kind of an RPG, but not particularly good at either. I'm glad it's a quality game for fans of the series, but it's totally not my bag.

What? A well rounded opinion where you didn't like the game, but didn't bash it senselessly? What the hell are you doing on Joystiq?

i never have played a Yakuza game before so when i played this Demo i enjoyed it .. just wish i could have seen more stores or other places on the inside but i loved the atmosphere in the demo and talking to people was fun in the game or hearing them speak in text. I also like running the streets and some guy will mainly say oh i'm sorry for bumping into you i think you should appologize, ok sure * POW RIGHT IN THE KISSER * thanks for the EXP * runs along *

if i remember correctly i think this game was like The Bouncer * i think * as it's been sometime now since i have played it. but i'l get this game at some point when it goes for a bit cheaper.

Fair enough, but you could always try evaluating it on its own merits.

I want Shenmue too. Now that they're done with this Yakuza thing, maybe the rumor of its return will come to fruition?

This isn't on topic at all, but I finally realised why people care about trophies in games. It really extends the life of games without multiplayer, even the games with multiplayer. As well, getting platinum trophies is so damn satisfying. I've got 4 :P

Is the demo indicative of the whole game? If so, these scores are ridiculous. The demo's gameplay was shallow and the story seems like any other boring Japanese gangster film (mindless dribble with stiff actors and boring dialogue).

You just don't understand Japanese culture.

These gangsters save little girls and help people carry ice cream. It's truer life than you've ever imagined.
