Molyneux has been in the industry for DECADES. He's made some of the most innovative games of all time. The guy has every right to be there.

I like how he says the first wave of games probably won't be what we expect, and the second wave is when we'll get interesting things... Is ANYONE expecting anything above mediocre in the first wave?

And by that, I mean he's acting like we expect awesome stuff right away.. Just realized the way I worded it sounded weird.

well, the 1st wave of games HAS to have something worthwhile and fun to play in order to draw in the consumer interest.

Expecting that the 1st wave of motion games will be crap is quite frankly an unfair assessment, the devs need to draw in a crowd and make some money in order to platform into better, higher dev cost motion games.

Side note: I recognize your avatar from the Irrational forums. props for having good taste if you're the same guy :)

I'm guessing there will be one or two games for each platform that are good compared to everything else, but I really doubt something will pop out that simply wows us to the extent of a great game.

But, to be fair, that's how pretty much any launch begins, and since Wave/Natal aren't full fledged systems, devs might be able to ease into it a little more and we'll see great games that just kind of integrate the control schemes.

And no, I am not the same guy. Never been to the Irrational forums. But that guy apparently has good taste.

"I don't think the first wave of these motion-control titles will be what you expect .... just as with every hardware chain, it's the second wave where they usually come up with stuff that's interesting ... so the second wave could be really cool."

I wonder if he said the same thing about Fable?

Shag,

Just out of curiosity, what games DO you like? Most of the highly acclaimed video games of this generation are fairly heavy in story. Just because a game tells a story doesn't mean it can't have gameplay as well. The two games you listed were both RPG's for crying out loud- of COURSE they'll have more story and environment and "soap opera" feel- it's a freakin' ROLE PLAYING GAME.

The Wii sounded so amazingly revolutionary when I heard about it, and when I first played it. Then I played Mario Kart Wii. When I realized how much more fun it was to play with the old-school controller, I decided that there was still life in traditional gaming.

Having a story doesn't prevent a game from being good. It's just that these particular games go way overboard as if interacting with the characters or the pursuit of that interactivity is the primary goal of the user. That may be, it's not my primary goal however, I want to get to the game play parts, the challenge part.

I was disappointed to hear several of the joystiq crew on a recent podcast admit that they turned the difficulty level of Dragon Age down because , and I'm paraphrasing here , They didn't want to waste time with a difficult challenge they just wanted to get to the next piece of the story. Granted, Dragon Age had some major problems when it came to the actual strategy elements so I'm not totally without sympathy, but why not just watch a movie which is better at telling a story and then you don't even have to fiddle with those challenging parts.

Anyways, Fable doesn't fall into the made for casual audience group just quite, but thats what hes talking about here, how to make games appeal to the large number of people that like things like circus games and other random crap. To anyone who wants to make money they are trying to figure this out, but to sit at a game developers conference for the industry and act like that kind of money grubbing cash in is some kind of altruistic "all for the betterment of gaming" act is complete douchery.

Shag,

Once again, you named an RPG as an argument. I think you just don't like RPG's and that's ok- there are genres I don't like either (I detest the music/rhythm genre for example). But by using a genre that is known for being story driven as an argument that games are becoming "gameplay light and story heavy" is a little unfair. Now if you used MGS4 as an example, then you at least would have a valid point. However MGS4 is hardly the norm of action/adventure games, so again your argument would have little in terms of weight.

For every Fable, Mass effect and Dragon Age, which are story heavy, you have Mario, Modern Warfare and Rock Band which have virtually zero story elements and instead focus on gameplay mechanics.

@shag,

some people enjoy playing through games that are challenging but dont overwhelm them, some people arent as good as playing certain games than others. if you truly were a designer and your response to anyone who turns down difficulty because they enjoy the story elements more than getting killed 90% of the time, than i have great concerns about the industry im working in.

Even if your fantastic at games, some people dont want a challenge, they want to sit down and play something, playing means you take an active role in what you are doing, while watching a movie is a passive. Some people enjoy taking the active role more than the passive role, even if the active role isnt especially challenging.

your ignorance is showing, the purpose of any industry is to try to expand, to reach out to the older generations and the younger generations and the small demographics and say look, i know you dont like what we are doing currently but would you be interested in this. e.g. my sister has worked in aged care facilities, helping the elderly with physical activity, many of those facilities have wii's, because it allows old people to do some exercise and have fun at the same time.

so while you may think that appealing to different demographics is the destruction of everything you hold deerly, without these discussions, gaming can not evolve and be held in a higher position than just what the basement dwellers do, all day, everyday.

In closing, not everyone plays games for the same reason and to think that is ignorant.

"I think there are a lot of "soap opera" gamers"

What? Gamers can't demand better stories in their games?

"they want to be part of a story so they can fantasize about being someone else"

Isn't that the whole point of gaming? To become immersed in a world and play the character? Isn't that the whole point of RPGs especially.

"Then they swoon over every gameplay light story heavy piece of garbage that comes out Fable, Mass Effect"

This is where your whole argument fails miserably. You sayi gameplay light and then name Mass Effect. You also called Fable and Mass Effecy garbage.

"I'm into gameplay, not using video games as some sort of story telling fantasy lifestyle emulator."

I am pretty sure you didn't play either of those games or you wouldn't make such a stupid statement like that. Mass Effect 2's gameplay has been praised, and Fable 2's one button combat is now being used in many games.

For someone who calls others "soap opera gamers" you sure as hell are the drama queen.

tl;dr You are trolling and have no idea what the hell you are talking about

Dear sweating devs, Please think outside the waggle box. Move has been stated to be so accurate that a Sony chief used it to play StarCraft on his PC. You hear that, Blizzard? Let's get StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 on the PS3. Listening, Lord Sid Meier? Civ 5 plzkthx with not only precise controls, but face-to-face diplomacy via the PS3 Eye.

You have the power to make this awesome. Wipe that sweat off your brow and hold your head up high, brother!
