Following last night's NPD report for February, Nintendo has issued a press release lauding the amazing selling power of its own products. In typical fashion, the gaming giant that got your grandma into gaming has managed to sell a ridiculous amount of DS and Wii systems in the U.S. -- 1.9 million in the first two months of 2010, to be exact.
As impressive as that 1.9 million figure is, Nintendo's ability to break its own records is even more impressive. In selling 613,000 DS units throughout February 2010, Nintendo has managed to set a new monthly record, besting the previous top-selling month of February 2009's figure of 597,000 units. It would seem that two things are certain in this life: we're all going to die one day and before that day comes, each of us is going to own nine DS systems.
With March 28 fast approaching -- that's the release date for the DSi XL -- Nintendo is hoping to further build on the success of its now six-year-old handheld. And, to think, even after all that time, the gif still hasn't gotten old.

@Blight: I think he might that it comes with the PS3 at no additional cost.
Having the tech and the bundle are one thing. Having it at a higher cost is another.

I wish the same about the GB coming back. It's not impossible for them to sell great, solid games without having to slap some second screen functionality onto the final products. Unfortunately, given the success of the Wii/DS, I doubt Nintendo will take a step away from gimmicks anytime soon.

You could argue that the Wii is gimmicky and I'd agree but the DS's touch screen has introduced some clever game mechanics over the years that can hardly be called gimmicks anymore. Wii can be fun at times but yeah, motion controls do still seem to be a bit of a gimmick.

I often wonder if the Wiimote wouldn't be considered as gimmicky if developers just used the damn controls right.
Is it that devs aren't trying, or is the secret to making more accurate and responsive motion controls being kept from them?
The Wiimote's got a ton of useful control methods, but devs never use them... they mostly just use the swinging for half-arsed platformer games.
I mean seriously, if the pointer can act like a mouse, why the hell aren't there that many (or any good) RTSs on the Wii? You know, the only genre that you can't ever argue that an analog controller beats a mouse.

Seriously. People kept talking about Plants vs Zombie on xbox arcade or something but I don't even get how that would work. It could work on Wii if done correctly but it would be an instant buy if they put it on DS. Wii controls can be very intuitive when developers try (like in all the major nintendo releases) but a lot of the time it's just unnecessary waggle. Maybe the motion control dev will increase now that PS3 is on the scene. Never thought I'd see the day when a remote/nunchuck game comes out multi platform.

I see figures like this every month, and I usually don't really consider them, but it's pretty amazing when you stop and think about what it means.
Worldwide, the Wii has outsold the NES by about 6 million units. About 67 million vs. 61 million. That's pretty huge, given that pretty much everyone I knew when I was 7 had an NES, and they had no major competitors.
By comparison, SNES sold about 49 million, N64 sold about 34 million, and the GameCube didn't even crack 22 million.
Wii sales might be slowing, but they're showing no signs of stopping. Nintendo should be proud.

I agree with you on the second point, but three Marios, two Zeldas, and two Metroids aren't enough?

Looks like Mario cashed in all that change he's been picking up since 1983.
