Concerning "love" in DAO, getting freaky with Morrigan doesn't mean I love her.

I do love her actually but that's incidental.

I concur that the love interests in Fable II were disposable. Well, I'm glad that people are still trying to progress the medium. I think it really is improving. Its just also costing more money. Sometimes I feel like I'm more investing in the future of games than actually buying a game sometimes. But I plan to do this for a long time, so I'd like to see progress :-)

adding that the lovers in Fable II felt "disposable

Pretty sure that was intentional. Afterall, if she tried to leave me, a simple stabbing saved me a lot of money.

Sounds like a country song.

"I stabbed my baby cus she didn'y love me any more,
Like hell I'm gonna pay for a divorce"

Everybody!

I think a good start to the type of games they're hoping to create in regards to evoking an emotional response was Heavy Rain. Granted I didn't love the characters (sub-par voice acting can take you out of the experience), but I felt empathy for them.

I hope we get more games like that. We need more female developers that will take gaming experiences to that level because frankly, the industry is male dominated and we're developing from a genetic level (ie, cromag need to hunt and kill).

More emotional games will help us tap into that side of ourselves we don't often express even in real life and frankly I don't think male developers are in-tune enough to make truly emotional experiences.

Yes, I'm a straight guy saying this, take it how you will.

If they really want emotional responses, they probably ought to encourage more ladies to join in the field. They also might want to ease up on the hectic pacing of getting a game to print.

A lot of games with enticing stories will elicit emotional responses, examples, the first Starcraft when Kerrigan was left for dead, Half life 2 had several touching moments, when Dog looked like it was dead, Alyx and later her father being attacked, and really just about anybody in HL2 who helped you along then immediately getting popped, No Russian in MW2 and many other games. Any story that pulls us in, manipulates our emotional responses and keeps us going right, Jane Pinkard's talk was it really about just "love" or is she really just saying games should have a deep engrossing story? Serious Sam, Pac Man, Bejeweled, Team Fortress 2 even, for example elicit no designed emotional responses.

It's people like this that make me love games, and that's among many other reasons. THESE people are the future of the games we play, not little Bobby Kotick over there, pumpin' the milk to the shelves. The people at Microtalks are passionate at what they do, and I'm proud to invest in an industry with such care involved.

I find it very strange that a post about this years micro-talks would neglect to mention Jesse Schell's passionate developer call to arms to work against the scary future he outlined in his controversial DICE speech earlier this year.

I arrived to the session late so I did not see all of the talks, but of the ones I saw it was the clear stand out.
