"All good advice, we're sure, but the best advice at all probably came.."

"...advice of all..."

I've been enjoying all this GDC stuff more than the E3 stuff. I know that sounds dumb, because there haven't been as many announcements.

The developers just seem to be a whole lot more relaxed and open. In the interviews people have been more open about the design process, behind the scenes, politics and daily life. They aren't having to focus on teasing information out about whatever big game they would be announcing at most conventions, without spoiling stuff they weren't supposed to mention.

I'm loving it.

It's not dumb at all. Hearing/reading about the way people/teams in the industry really work is far more interesting than just what's coming out in the future.

Hence 'conference' instead of 'expo'.

I guess I'm confused about the distinction between the two.

Obviously there are a lot of media covering it. It's still in the center of the throng of some pretty big announcements (PS Move). A lot of competition is walking amongst each other. Its guests are exclusive (i think)

BUT...

The media is much more niche than usual. The announcements aren't expected and carry much less pressure. The competition is candid and happy to compare notes for the betterment of the industry and the form. Of course, the big Expo you must be referring to has been pretty exclusive lately too.

Also, it says GDC EXPO on a huge banner in a pic right next to my comment box. So what is the subtle semantic difference in the words you posit? Obviously they are exhibiting things while attending conferences.

The TEAM that made Narbacular Drop, the student game that preceded Portal, got hired by Valve to make Portal. Presumably, they're also working on Portal 2, and will thus get paid properly for it.
