Why not? I'd kill for Netflix functionality on my mobile. Start watching a movie or show on Xbox Netflix the night before, finish it on the commute, or during your lunch break, or between classes. That would kick ass.

Hoping WP7 gets shoehorned into a Zune HD 2 if only for this function alone, the game stuff is just icing for me now.

Well, why not?

Streaming content is a much better alternative for a phone than having all the movies and shows you want to watch on the phone's memory.

To be honest, this actually makes me more interested in the phone itself than before.

I'd like my next phone to have a screen like the HD2, that would be great for watching video on. I really love the look of the new WinMo. I'm just worried about some stuff like the whole multitasking issue.

But... Why not?!

A feature Netflix needs to work into this, is the ability to cache an entire movie, or a couple episodes of a show, for later use. (i.e. Queue up a flick while sitting in the airport, for use on that flight.)

Blackberry may not be much for entertainment or (in my opinion) a pleasant UI interface but when it comes to productivity they are amazing. I've noticed the people at my work that are always getting a ton o email an need to stay on top of it all swear by their 'crackberries'.

It's not likely to show up for the iPhone, Netflix runs on Silverlightm which was developed by, of course, Microsoft.

Netflix has a common API that's open to third party developers. I'm sure if we saw an official Netflix app it would bypass Silverlight in the same way that the Youtube app (and the youtube developer API) bypasses Flash.

@ NamePending - Microsoft would probably kill to have Silverlight on iPhone OS, they want it to become a standard, they don't want to limit it's availability (It's Apple that wouldn't want it, same with Flash)

"uhhh you DO know the FIRST Smartphone was a WinMo phone right??"

That point just makes it more apparent how much they dropped the ball... Android and the iPhone OS have made Microsoft redo everything from the ground up. Even if WinMo was the first, that name means nothing as of last month, dead in the water. None of that WinMo legacy is compatible with WinPhone7.

Chris Microsoft weren't first to produce smart phones, I dont think they have been the first to produce anything..

It was IBM with Simon -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_%28phone%29

followed by:

Nokia Communicator (1996) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_Communicator

WinMo 7 is pretty meh imho, its a different take on touch screen phones like iphone / android ooh and it has its own marketplace now, how original ...

http://www.engadget.com/photos/three-windows-phone-7-series-devices-all-in-a-row/#2803173 -- I really dont like the ui, ive heard a few reviewers going all weak at the knees over it, I personally think it looks shit. Each to their own..

Also the comment boards on engadget are going wild over the phone, the market place is a complete rip off of Apple iphone , why am I not surprised and the phone cant multitask -- I'll be sticking to Android ..

Cause the android market place is NOTING like the App store, amirite? There's no original ideas in Competition anymore, just improving those that exist.

What I meant is that winphone7s new market place is as locked down as apples, you cant install anything outside of the market place, you cant add sources etc etc..

Android marketplace while similar , is slightly different. You can enable non-android market sources .. It is in fact more akin to something like apt-get / synaptic. If you have used ubuntu or debian you will know what I am talking about.. Infact the whole market place / appstore idea is basically apt-get which goes back to 1998 and to Linux / Debian..

as much as i understand the convenience of mobile netflix, with the continued proliferation of film on smartphone devices i can't help but feel that this somewhat wrecks the movie watching experience. movies are an inherently visual art form, so to watch them on such a small screen is, i think, undercutting some of the intended experience.

mr. david lynch has much stronger words for it than i, but nonetheless we agree.

I remember the music elitests and audiophiles saying the same thing about MP3s and digital media altogether. While it would be great if everyone on earth had a 50inch plasma, or if everyone on earth had top-of-the-line pro audio monitors, that simply isn't the case and the avg. consumer doesn't really care about the "intended veiwing/listening experience". That's simply elitest, artisic BS. And this is coming from an audio guy.

I was just going to link you that David Lynch video. People as a whole no longer care about quality. At least, not to the extent that we'd like. Download a song or purchase it from itunes or Amazon and you're getting it at a serious downgrade from its CD version. Most people don't care about that. This is the same deal, and I hate thinking about it.

@embassy

I didn't see your comment before listening. I don't think it's fair to call everyone like that an "elitist." Sure, maybe if they're being an ass about it, but not everyone is like that. I think it's very disconcerting that as a society we are sacrificing quality for convenience. If that doesn't bother you, that's fine with me.

Just try and be a little more open minded.
