Borderlands 'Double Game Add-on Pack' arrives April 6 in NA, April 9 'internationally;' not coming to PS3

"A two pack?" you ask, confused by today's announcement of the Borderlands DLC retail package. "But doesn't that game have three DLC packs? And aren't there more coming?" Yeah, sure, and you might even have a point! But for now, 2K Games chose to announce the release of The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned and Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, together on disc, for $19.99 (starting on April 6 in North America and April 9 everywhere else).

More confusing? Apparently the retail pack won't arrive on PS3, though both pieces of content are already available digitally (for the same price, no less) on the PlayStation Network. Yep, we're not really sure what to say either, but we've asked Gearbox and 2K Games for a reason why the pack isn't heading to the PS3 (or if it ever will, for that matter), and if this also be the case with future DLC releases at retail. We'll let you know what we hear back as soon as we can.

I'm assuming it might be because there isn't a way to transfer DLC from a disc to the HDD on the PS3. I know for games like Oblivion GOTY, with the 360 version you would get a second disc with the additional DLC on it. On the PS3 that extra stuff would just be pressed onto the game disc.

Next generation, huh? Must be why this generation on the whole doesn't give shit about it.

Downloading off a Blu-ray disc to the hard drive IS possible - some games ship with demo installers on the disc, so this Borderlands add-on disc could simply do it this way.

It would be a waste of a Blu-ray, though. 2-3GB of content on a disc that could hold 10 times that on a single layer?

I think they either hate the PS3 and don't care to do it (they STILL didn't fix a lot of problems with it. My friend list is way out of date, and one of my friends can't play online with anyone from his PSN ID; he has to use his wife's PSN ID), OR, the likely reason, that they're waiting for a few more DLC packs and will release one big disc with all of them.

i'm kinda hoping this means there will be a 4th piece of dlc, and then a second disc pressed with the remaining parts.

i hate having some on disc and some downloadable.

Gearbox isn't Valve - they don't avoid putting out games for a system by being disingenuous about development time, costs, profits, etc.

This time around, with the likely higher cost of a Blu-ray disc, it might not have made sense to reissue the DLC as a physical copy when it's already available elsewhere. No biggie, I say let Gearbox/2K get as much pure profit as they can - they deserve it for Borderlands (which i will continue playing as soon as FFXIII lets go of it's grip on my soul).

It could have something to do with blu-ray versus dvd? Less cost-effective to release on blu-ray or by not releasing on blu-ray they don't have to pay some licensing fee?

Just a guess, I'm not 100% sure who pays what, where and why.

I hope they give me a reason to buy this thing, like a disc with concept art or something. If it's just a dvd case with a DLC number in it, I think I'll pass.

The only reason to press a disc for this is so the offliners don't miss out, or for archival purposes. If it's completely reliant on online activation, it's about as useful as a hard copy of a Valve PC game.

I don't think it matters, since I'm waiting for the inevitable "Game of the Year" edition release later on down the line, with all the DLC included on a single disc.

Protip: If you're in a position where you can't download the DLC (i.e. no internet) Mad Moxxi isn't worth it. Unless you're LANing up with other no-internet people. So, basically, is Zombie Island worth $20? Well, you decide, I guess.

Also I guess this is only for xbox users w/o internet since PC players wouldn't be able to read this.

i would have to agree with oldmanpip. i mean, just looking at the prices of retail movies on DVD vs. Blu-ray we can see that Blu-ray is almost twice the price of DVD still.

Exactly. Sony will want to charge 2k games like $10.00 for a blu-ray disc that in reality in mass quantities probably costs closer to under $2 seeing as how you can get 10 packs of blank blu-ray recordable discs in that price range per disc. Thus leaving Sony with 50%+ of the profit of the dlc. They'd rather sell it to PS3 users via the PSN network and leave Sony with a more reasonable share of around 10-15% (probably by the time psn charges for bandwidth, servers and overhead).

But you know for a huge dlc pack like this, you really need the storage of blu-ray (cough cough).

Somewhere else I saw it stated that Sony will not allow Disc versions of content that is already available as DLC.

But my local Gamestop has discs on shelves for add-ons that are also DLC.

There could be any number of reasons for this... for all we know the reporting isn't even accurate. Maybe the disc based release for PS3 is glitchy or hasn't been released because of a 4th DLC. Maybe it's just a lot more profitable to keep it DLC only. But it's not because Sony has some bright line rule forbidding it.

Still waiting for that GOTY edition ... once they stop putting out DLC!! >_

Shipping out already available DLC on a disc ≠ developing it... PS3 users can still download it for the same price like 99% of the 360 and PC users will anyway.

Last time I checked, my PS3 played DVDs and CDs.... So why cant they release the DLC on a DVD for PS3???? Cost effective argument = fail

Last I checked it only plays ps3 games on bluray and downloads... unless it's playing old ps2 and ps1 games for dvd and cd.

Ok... if we take your argument and the PS3 can only run ps3 games if its a blu ray disc.It could still be a CD or DVD (i dunno how big the dlc is) and just install on the hard drive. There is no reason for em to ignore ps3. And didn't it sell almost as well on ps3?

And im not totaly sure, but as long as its encripted right, and the file structure is the same. Why wouldn't the ps3 be able to run the dlc off a dvd? The prob with emulation is that ps2 games were programed differently. Reading the data off the disc shouldnt be the problem, if it has the capability it has it (which it does for all three formats), its in the chip (emotion?) vs the cell that the problem lies.

Its not a that they "physically" cant release the addon pack on DVD, it has to be released on Blu-ray not only to conform with PS3 licencing standards, but its a very secure disc.
The Blu-ray is not just like any other, pop it into a drive and it works.. ps3 games are specially encoded for copy protection and many other minor reasons.

They reeeeallly seem to like that image of the guy with his fingers to his head. The Borderlands world has so much more potential, I kind of wish they'd come up with something more interesting.

I'm kind of surprised Sony (at least I get the impression) forces people to use the bluray format. It's obviously unnecessary for many games, I would think just like PS2 devs could release games on CD's - PS3 devs would be able to use DVD's if they chose. I know they're trying to force their format to catch on, but that seems like a silly way to do it.

I would like it to be discounted... but wouldnt expect it to be. however, since there doesnt seem to be an reason to hold it from being on disc vs being on psn. I wish it was on both so it gave us the opportunity to trade it in and buy it vs get it with a credit card or debit etc. Which would deff give sony more sales.

Err, I guess I should have mentioned that my previous comment is what happened with Fallout 3. I tried to look for the post here on Joystiq since I am pretty sure this site is where I first read about it, but their search engine hates me.

dao jones, I have a retail blu-ray disc of Shivering Isles. I don't think you're right about it not being available. It's not the GOTY, just the add-on (and requires the original game).

Anyway, I don't see any reason to complain. I appreciate the dev putting it on PSN if they ran into some kind of trouble or expense putting it on disc. As long as it's available to the PSN community, I'm happy and will buy the product if it's good (as in this case). If you have a PS3 and it's not online, you are doing it wrong. Perhaps you're doing it wrong because you simply have no choice... that's the only valid reason.

I think downloaded games are much more convenient than disc based. PS3s can have massive and cheap hard drives, so I want as much content downloadable as possible. I'd probably pay a little more for a download than a disc, even though it comes with the lack of resale (I never sell games anyway) and some kind of DRM potential issues.

It rocks to be able to scroll through Warhawk or GT5P or Wolf3d or whatever when I'm bored.

So its 20$ for Dr. Ned. No.
