I think you could probably call it the year of firings in general. You know, what with the recession and all.

If Jessica Chobot gets layed off....she should go work at G4 TV!!!

She would be perfect in Attack of the Show!

Get a pretty face on there OTHER than Olivia Munn...and that unqualified Alison Hastelip.

I would go with staff firings everywhere.. my company lost roughly 2000 people last year, of which I merely skidded by, and am extremely grateful.. This year is the year of management.. 1000 more cuts by the end of the year with us... just rediculous. And what happens? All the work goes to Manila, or somewhere in India like our company is doing.. rush training, no tolerance, and paying people less than 1/4 what they pay us here, while workin in much poorer conditions with no benefits.. It's heartless out there man. My company makes billions off of Canadian consumers, yet they don't have the heart to keep canadian workers employed.

"It probably goes without saying, but please keep this absolutely confidential to IGN." Apparently no, it does not go without saying. Of course, handing if the memo winds up in the hands of a person who just got fired, chances are that person is not going to give two f*cks.

Yes they will. If you go into an interview for another company don't you think that your actions when you were let go would come into play?

There's a difference between getting fired and getting laid off. In a bad economy, it's typically the latter. These people are provided with severance packages to help with the transition, and usually positive references when they look for another job.

I manage people. If I had to lay someone off, and they wanted to hurt the company (and by extension, the rest of their co-workers who are still around) as they go, you can be assured I would not be helping them in the slightest. It's called "burning bridges" for a reason.

Money says the Nintendo staff will be eviscerated. Apparently only 4% of the entire site's traffic comes from Wii/DS, and they've already prepared to jettison the whole division by moving Cassamassina out of there

If this were a just world, Hatfield would be fired with extreme prejudice.

Which is ironic considering the sites roots:

I remember going to that URL back when I was looking at the latest info on seemingly vaporware titles on N64 over 10 years ago. I still remember seeing the first screens of Perfect Dark. I loved ign64.com

I have no idea how the traffic on the site breaks down, but I gotta believe that the DVD / Blu-Ray guys will be shown the door first.

Given the memo specifically saying the core values are videogames, and the fact that their reviews are absolute jokes (http://forums.highdefdigest.com/high-definition-smackdown/92004-ign-gives-gladiator-10-10-pq-braveheart-8-10-a.html), I'd put my bet on them.

Good hopefully they get rid of that fatass Greg miller and his biased psp hating ipod loving bad review spewing ass! That guy is just a big fanboy who can't even represent the platform he was hired to represent. These guys didn't even know Demon souls (gamespots goty 2009) was a game. I remeber their lists and podcast shows that never once mentioned the game. then his quote about ipod being a better gaming device then psp. and his me2 is better then uncharted 2 bs. The guy is a dousche and needs to be replaced! PRonto!

@Khan

There is no Nintendo staff anymore because the individual console teams were dissolved late last year. That said, there are still executive editors for each console (i.e. Craig Harris is the executive editor for the Wii/DS channel) but all of the video game editors cover all of the consoles now.

Unless you meant "Nintendo Staff" as in the regulars on the "Nintendo Voice Chat" podcast (being Craig Harris, Sam Claiborn, and Scott Bromley). I don't think Craig will be the first to be cut (if at all) simply because he is one of the editors who has been there since the beginning and his work is integral to the Nintendo side of IGN.

I agree TRL is the funniest podcast on there. I still smile at remembering the "people are his internet" discussion. Other classics like bees and macro transactions stand out too. Not to mention the legendary Don King episode. IGN's podcasts are all great I'd hate for any of them to lose a member.

Though regarding the firing, this is terrible news. I dread reading the eventual list of who's been fired.

Wait Ctrl Prompt got shut down? Other then the call in quality I liked them.

I'm a huge fan of Game-Scoop and Podcast Beyond. Names of staff and phrases have been more common over the past 3 years in my home. I'd like to wish no one is affected but if you wanted to get rid of the Babe crews...

(Also TRL has really died on me over the past year. When I put it next to the GS and Beyond, I get depressed that it's not up to the same level in many areas. And the constant self bashing... come on already.

While its not good that people are losing their jobs I still cant stop thinking about how much I dislike IGN. I always think their reviews are awful and never give me a good idea of what the game actually feels like to play. They just write 4 pages of rambling. Their editorials are always fanboy written flamebait to generate hits on their site. Then there's the first peaks they get with everything where they will praise it so they can get more deals for exclusives with a company.

Klepto is right though. I don't trust IGN for reviews or previews any more. They positively gush about games they get exclusive previews for. When review time comes around they slice and dice the game for all its failings. If they'd commented on a few of those flaws in the previews instead of glowing praise prior to the review gutting, maybe the developers would have made some changes.

I cant stand the site, although I like their podcasts. The site is targeting 12 year olds or something. They get a lot of exclusive access, but they sell themselves our completely for it. Its kinda sad to see these talented people disrespecting themselves like that and then trying to defend their bull inflated reviews by saying "Well, in context, it was a fair number."

Competitor hate aside, what kills me is that they are not firing people because they are doing badly. The memo says "We are doing great, so, some of you, just bug off." WTF? If you are realigning your business, why not do it gradually, so it does not become an industry event?

Fox is a business like any other. Angry Conservatism is what sells for 24 hr cable news.

To sensory and others worried about Chobot,

A) The email says they are looking to be #1 in "Men Entertainment". Kinda hard without her (And those who don't like the sentiment, I'm just the internet's messenger here).

B) If she is laid off, she will be picked up in a second by any other video game media source. Her career in video game journalism (or path of destruction upon said field of journalism, depending on what side of the fence you stand on) won't just end abruptly.

Love,

Common Sense.

Oh, sh*t.

Question: why do companies do 'layoffs'? Wouldn't it make more sense, in terms of PR and employee morale, to do cuts slowly but surely? That's what I would do... if I was a high-ranking CEO of a major company...
