tone makes all the difference between critique and trolling. For many, Matt crossed that line. I am inclined to agree with them.

What's wrong with some of you? So, maybe you don't like the site, but being happy (and HOPING!?) that people get laid off is pretty messed up. Seriously guys, gaming isn't such an important thing that you need to hope someones life gets screwed over because you don't like they way they review a video game. That really is sad.

"It probably goes without saying, but please keep this absolutely confidential to IGN."

Wow...that's like someone saying, "Okay, I gotta a secret. DON'T TELL ANYBODY!"

So does anyone actually have a comprehensive list of who got laid off? Or has that shit not been released/dug up yet?

Would start digging myself, but there is the whole "work to do" thing.

Also, the IGN forums scare me.

I think it already happened at Joystiq a while ago when they consolidated all the channels into one. There are many fewer people working now. I still miss Justin Berg.

Please, for the love of all that is good, I hope this includes Jim Vejvoda of the movie review staff. I don't think I've ever seen a movie critic so consistently deliver completely biased opinions on a daily basis.

Otherwise, this is terrible news. Ever since the massive Kain & Lynch incident at Gamespot where Gerstmann was fired and the rest of the worthwhile staff quit, it seems like IGN has steadily been picking up in quality and the reviews have been genuinely more balanced. Hopefully this won't kill all that progress.

It does suck when people lose their jobs, especially if they have a family to support, but everything from IGN is complete garbage so this should come as no surprise to anyone. Maybe the parents of all the 12 year old kids who idolize these guys decided to stop paying for their kid's IGN insider memberships.

The writing on IGN is some of the worst I have ever read and the podcasts all sound like a bunch of 12 year old kids stuck in the bodies of mid to late 20 something year old guys and who's parents let them have way too much sugar before podcast recording time. How many times can you listen to a bunch of guys screaming over the microphones and acting like little kids?

There's a pretty good "review" of Matt Cassamassina on IGN.com's profile of him. Looking at his smug face makes me want to slap him now... I still remember when he wrote a page and a half review of a Metroid Prime crystal art sculpture he got as a freebie from Nintendo. Needless to say the game was well reviewed.

Reading over this again I'm struck by how much of it is positive. They almost DOUBLED their audience over last year, have seen record growth, and are letting people go. "While we've been doing well -- we're profitable and our audience continues to grow " we're still going to fire people so we can make even MORE money. I realize IGN is a business. But that business is doing well and it's doing well on the hard work of those writers. It just sucks for those laid off and for fans of those people. Hopefully all those they fired will be ok.

It is the beautiful of capitalism, got to take the good with the bad. While the douchebag CEO is making 6 figures, people making way less will get laid off, even when the company is doing well.

Got to love a company that says, "We're making profits - but we're not making SUPER profits, so gotta can some of your asses."

Notice they never cut overhead, huh? More likely, they want raises.

Yep, blame good ol', value-less western capatlism.

I was watching a sunday business report talking about this same topic- profitablity, growth, and layoffs- and the person explicitly said that make no bones about it, the one thing that american businesses dont like is the WORKERS. Workers are the most expensive 'expense' by far, and if there are none, they execs and investors can keep all the money. and leave peanuts for the monkeys pressing the start buttons.

Ive never heard it put in such a beautifully simple, disgustingly honest way.

Think about in its most basic terms- in most forms of business, those that do the actual work are treated the worst, make the least, and are easily disposed of. If you are not in management, then you arent anything.

Me myself am a graphic artist, but there are so many designers in the field already, with no bargaining power at all, that im leaving the field entirely. Some dumb ass post college designer will gladly take my job for pennies on the dollar.

It is so incredibly ironic, because without peopel to do the work, there is no product to sell. This spins my head every day of the week, lookign for a way out.

To all you IGN haters, please show compassion to those who were laid off yest; i am one of the unlucky ones. Please understand the poor decision making from the GM/etc...hit us pretty bad yesterday....all about greed...to keep his and other execs pocket lined with their $$$$$$. Roy Bahat's memo was soooo effin contradicting.....don't understand why a poor leader of a company is still on board, why didn't he get the pink slip, since he obviously doesn't know how to run a company?!?!?!??!

People were laid off was 25% of IGN Entertainment; approx 130 people - Brisbane, Los Angeles, Chicago & NY office.

Sigh.
