The Women in Games conference won't make it to its seventh consecutive year. Organizers apologize and cite "low delegate numbers" as the reason for the cancellation. The conference would have been held March 25-26 at Bradford College, UK -- which apparently does not have a Dr. Tony Hill on staff. What? Oh, Bradfield.
Develop reports conference organizers will provide full refunds and that canceling wasn't an easy decision, but necessary because attendance would have been far below the break-even requirement. No word if the conference will make another attempt in 2011 or if that's all she wrote.

I actually go to Bradford College. There are quite a few women on the game dev courses I hear. However there's only 1 game dev tutor who's female compared to about 4 males.
I'm annoyed this is cancelled as I wanted to go. But I'm not surprised as the College did jack all to promote it.
The computer game side of Bradford College as a whole is very hit and miss. If on the off chance someone is reading this who is considering going there to do a computer games course especially a HE one: DON'T GO! Go somewhere else, seriously.
Also my girlfriend plays games as much as me, as does my sister. I know other women who play games. Blah blah blah. Both women and men play games, let's all try accept that and not keep pushing a tired stereotype.

I have a friend who does games design (or something along those lines) at Bradford College, and the way he makes it out is that he spends most of the day playing CoD4.
It's a shame they didn't advertise this better, because all Bradford seems to have going for it at the moment is a dirty great big crater and a smoudering pile of rubble in the town centre. Oh, and the Jesus Man.

Zal knows every woman who plays video games apparently. There is, actually, a huge number of middle-aged women who play games, but they mostly play little freeware-demo-type shits on the internet. they still count them for polls and whatnot but I doubt they spend much money on games.

OH SNAP.. But doesn't this fly in the face of all those statistics that like 55% of gamers are women?
I guess we need new stats like what % give a crap. Or what % would spend more than $0 on a game.
Or we could just exclude Yahoo! web games from all those stats. That might drop the 55% significantly.
No offense meant to the small but awesome legion of legitimate female gamers out there, some of whom are probably getting refunds about now.

i wonder if it's the economy that dealt the final blow, since it seems you have to pay to attend. if i were a gamer girl in a rough spot, this conference would not be on my list of priorities.

or maybe that's why the conference was cancelled. can't blame people for showing up to a place that doesn't exist.

And one day they'll have the right to vote!
Ha. Ha ha. That was just a joke my good fellows, that will never happen.

In my 3 years of playing on xbox live I have only come across one girl gamer which I could verify as being a girl!
Why do they get a conference? whats so special about women in the games industry?
Quoted from the site - Join WFTV for a panel discussion about why the gaming industry has been dominated by men, and what opportunities are available for women from a Film/TV/Theatre/New Media background to gain work in the gaming industry.
If you have experience why would they not hire you, because your a girl!

Wow,
Let me speak to the all the little boys in a language you understand. The reason this failed is because some poor women aren't understanding the business of games and going to their own sites, (instead male run sites) and getting the word out. They mistakenly thought the other side would play fair and give them the coverage they needed and what they get is a bunch of little boys who are apparently afraid of women (you must be or you wouldn't make sexist comments, you only ridicule that which you fear) who wouldn't know a woman from their controller. Hell some of your controllers ARE your women. I doubt you've been within 2 feet of a real one, or you'd know better.
What will be your smart ass come back here? You're a girl? Why yes, yes I am, proudly and a gamer. What else you got?

um....i'm a guy who's been involved with women's right issues and activism for a while, and i can tell you right now that you're not going to win anyone over by ridiculing them.
i understand your frustration, some of the things being posted here are downright ignorant. but if you think you're going to change anyone's mind or advance your cause by acting as immature and childish as the people you're angry at, then you're going to be waiting a long long time. people don't change because you yell at them. if you can't win people over with reason, then anger certainly isn't going to do it.
next time, try being a little more level-headed. state your case, and don't let it get to you. let the haters hate, these kinds of attitudes are slowly dying off, even if some internet bozos make it seem otherwise.

@David
LOL that wasn't anger that was plain ole me. I've been running my OWN site for over 7 years, hosted my own podcast for over 5 years (I knew Joystiq when it was brand new) I've been on G4, spoke on panels and the list goes on. As I said I speak to them in a language they understand.
The tactic you're speaking of is WHY a lot of women sites/conferences/gamers/gamer clans DON'T do well. It's because so many women think, oh, turn the other cheek. Be nice, we'll win them over. Nice does not WORK when dealing with people like this. I cannot tell you how many times I've been at a conference and standing in front of men who are ignoring me because I'm being "nice". I'm 5'1, tiny ,woman of color. They don't want to pay any attention to me, until I get in their face. THEN I get things done. The guys, same thing. When they realize I'm not going to crawl into a corner and cry because of something they have said (and this is a common tactic among a lot of the male gamer population. To play on the 'emotions' of a woman) they tend to back down. I've heard every insult and nothing they say is going to deter me.
So while your advice is good advice, it's time to put away the niceties and actually get things done...by any means necessary.

I'm female and from the UK and it's a real shame that I hadn't even heard this mentioned, I would have gone in a shot, it's definitely a case of a proper marketing fail.
Hopefully they can come back next year.
As for half the comments here, shame on you! =P As for the reason there's apparently no girls on Xbox Live, it's because they're only turning their headsets on when they're in a party, because they really don't want to hear the joke about women's feet being smaller than a man's because it means they can get closer to the sink to wash up!
