Screw just the DarkSims, bring on the various incarnations of Sims with DarkSim Difficulty. Like TurtleSim, with his heavy shields; or VengeSim, whose sole objective was to destroy whoever killed him last; or PeaceSim, who loved nothing more than grabbing all the weapons and ammo and hiding; plus the dozen other Sim types that I can't even remember. Add to that the 5 levels of Sim difficulty and dear god that's why I wasted most of my teenage years on Perfect Dark.

Agreed. The FistSim provided endless laughs for my buddies and me as it chased us with blazing speed, bitchslapped my character, and blurred my screen as it stole our guns.

I just don't know about this one. Perfect Dark was cool back in the day, and all. I played the SHIT out of it when it came out. I'm not sure if the nostalgia is enough for me. I'll try the demo for sure, but shooters have come a long way since then and I'm not sure it'll be something that I, personally, can go back to.

Then again, I've spent ten dollars on FAR worse things.

Aside from the obvious graphical upgrades, and the hand-holding / coddling that FPS games do nowadays, how have FPS games really changed? It's still ultimately the same old routine - Find guns, find ammo, kill bad guys, get from point A to point B, ad infinitum.

Seriously, anything else multiplayer at this point - MW2 has worn out its' welcome.

Indiana Jones: Too small for two of us.

Indiana Jones: That belongs in a museum.
Rare: So do you.

I used to play the heck out of this game back when it first came out. It was an instant purchase for me this morning when it was released on XBLA. Sadly, after playing it for about 20 minutes, all nostalgia wore off and it got old and boring. Fast. There is no denying it was a revolutionary and excellent game back when it was originally released, but I do not at all think it holds up very well today. No jumping? I forgot about that...

That was my favorite thing about perfect dark! you didn't have to aim so perfectly and didn't have to jump and duck around all the time. I also don't recall having problems with spawning near an enemy or getting shot through 10 walls. (except for the farsight lol). that was my absolute favorite game for YEARS

I liked the single player of Goldeneye more, but not the multiplayer. PD64 multiplayer is still one of the best offline multiplayer set ups.

Perfect Dark rocked. It still rocks. I should grab this, because if it had any flaws it was the framerate and of course the N64's horri-bad texture buffering.

PD had multiplayer features most games are STILL lacking and was endlessly customizable. God lord it was fun to stick poisoned combat knives into corpses and they'd spawn back sick. I hope they didn't fix that.

The main game itself was very deep and technically impressive (even if the framerate wasn't)

Yeah, I think I'll drop 10 bucks or whatever on this.

If there was a review in there somewhere, I couldn't find it. Seems more like an article on the recent history of FPS's and gaming.
I never played PD back in the day so I don't know much about it, and this "review" did not help me.

I guess you need somebody to break it up with bold words warning you what you're about to read about.

...and while my laptop is charging I COULD BE THAT SOMEBODY!

Graphics:
4J's XBLA port so vividly "re-images" Perfect Dark exactly how you might imagine it -- in un-stuttering 60 frames per second, I should add. Our memory has its way of up-ressing our past experiences, and 4J's project exploits our willingness to remember Perfect Dark perhaps not so clearly as it was.

Tone:
For one, there's a playfulness about the game that presents itself in stark contrast to the seriousness inherent in the big-budget bravado epics that rule today's market (as corny as those games sometimes turn out). While any "alien" conspiracy story exposes itself to bouts of comedy, Perfect Dark is rife with quips and giggles, recalling a time when games weren't so bogged down in the pressure to qualify as high art.

Gameplay:
You see, Perfect Dark is artful without having to take itself too seriously. By design, it's a humbling perfection of "golden age" gameplay, forcing trial-and-error–forged mastery, quick reflexes and a high score element in its built-in speed run support (which quite easily transitions to online leaderboards in the XBLA version). The "open" levels stand against the linear designs of DOOM-era FPSs, but today, without a blinking arrow navigating you to your next objective, the gameplay can feel aimless. There are many traps -- those "oops! wrong door" shootouts -- and each level has an "invisible" path carved through it, which must be mentally mapped, memorized and sprinted through in order to clear certain time challenges.

Control:
The game controls are better suited to the Xbox 360 gamepad, I found, as compared to an N64 controller and its single analog-stick (sure, back then, you could use two controllers) -- plus there are button layouts in the new version that mimic Call of Duty and Halo controls (but, remember, there's no jumping). With auto-aim off, face-shots are still challenging, but ever so darkly delightful when executed. Enemies are slightly more lifelike with high-res faces (can you spot Peter Molyneux?), but the comically exaggerated animations and spectacular death cries help to maintain the childlike expression of violence.

Multiplayer:
Perhaps, then, it's fitting to conclude by touching on Perfect Dark's multiplayer, which, as the successor to GoldenEye, inspired a generation of console designers and gamers to continue to evolve and compete in the adult-like "sport" of multiplayer gaming. You'll no doubt need a few Simulant-populated rounds of local practice, but, Perfect Dark multiplayer, which includes 3 GoldenEye maps and its weapons, is for the first time available to a thriving online community

Oh, wow, now it's a review. It's almost like it was there all along. ...wait, this isn't that "On-disk DLC" stuff I've been hearing about, is it? Joystiq's just ripping us off!

It truly is a shame how Microsoft has butchered Rare and it's creativity. They must be dying to come back to the big N.

This game would have been awesome as a Wii Ware Wii-make with the pointer controls.

Star Fox Adventures (their last truly good title outside of VP) is an outstanding Gamecube feat when viewed as a standalone title without the Star Fox 64 goggles on, and second only to Zelda in that genre.

Yeah they totally butchered Rare by letting them create high quality, creative, and niche games like Viva Pinata.

Also, it's not cool to pretend you have a girlfriend on the internet. I know you see that girl at the subway every day, and you're just thinking how you're gonna lose that weight and finally go talk to her, but you just need to give up. GIVE UP. You failed man. She's already banging your best friend behind your back, probably on your bed when you're out talking to all the cool bros at gamestop.

What do you think rare would be doing if they were still under nintendo's umbrella? you think they would be producing quality titles?

More then likely Nintendo would have them producing shovelware for the wii motion control gimmick just like microsoft has them for natal.

I was a die hard Nintendo fan. I have owned every nintendo console, but Nintendo really turned it's back on it's fans with the wii that have been there from the beginning supporting their consoles.

N64 was a blur-fest. I got one once as a gift, and was thrilled to get it, but after 2 days, urged the gift-giver to return it because it was an atrocity on the eyes.

So, since the N64 likely butchered the visuals of everything released on it, it's nice to hear that one of the better games on the console is now available in "visible" form.

It had some great, wonderful games, but I disagree.. It was not a
good console. Game carts were pricier than discs. You had to buy
rampacks and rumble separately.

It wasn't as bad as what Sega did to the Genesis in the end (with the
Sega CD and 32x), but it was heading in that direction. And as I said,
it was really blurry. The PS1 was pixellated, but at least it was
relatively sharp. Playing the N64 on a big TV was probably bad for
your eyes from all the eyestrain you'd have trying to get things in
focus...and I was trying to play it on a pretty big TV.

I was amply exposed to the N64, and it had some quality games. My
rationale when buying a console was that N64 had the better games,
but fewer of them. PS1 had good (but not as good) games, but many
more of them. Variety won out and I got the PS1. Anyway, I can play
most of the better ones on my Wii now. So it's all good.

I played Ocarina on my GC on the promo Wind Waker disc. The game held up well and looked better on the GC.

Of course it's blurry now, but the N64 had great visuals for its time and a fantastic library. It really was a friggin great system. Whether or not your missing out on it the first time around is cause for your error, you are just wrong. It looks blurry in retrospect but it was an incredibly fun system, and Mario 64 looked AWESOME when it came out.

Have to agree on the prowess of the N64 at the time. Making the jump from Super Mario World to Super Mario 64, and from Zelda LttP to OoT was amazing. Certainly bigger jumps in visuals than we've had recently.
