You see that beautiful, HUD-less vista above? It's from Another World, the European name for the beloved Amiga game from Eric Chahi (later ported to PC, Mega Drive / Genesis, SNES, GBA, among other platforms). Released stateside as Out of This World, the game's 15th anniversary edition (featuring a remastered version of the game, as well as a "making of" video and some other neat bonuses) has just landed on GOG.com for $9.99.
As is the case with other titles on GOG, you're all set to run it in Windows XP or Windows Vista (both 32 and 64-bit). If you've yet to play Another World, well, what's wrong with you? Seriously, it's a great game (not to mention highly influential). Speaking of platform support, why hasn't this made its way to XBLA or PSN yet?

I can confirm that Dosbox runs fine on Windows 7. Unless this version isn't the dos version.

This version is a native windows version but I can confirm so far as I've run through the first scene that it does indeed work on Windows 7.

7 supports anything that Vista supports, and even some things it doesn't.

Dont remember much about this game except for the fact that it was too friggin' hard for a 5-year-old(?) me. I got annoyed with it after two hours and made my dad drive back to the store to trade it back in.
So, lets have another go at it, shall we?

Heh, that's cute. The was pretty much a trial and error game, which would explain the difficulty factor. Sometimes you'd just run in a direction and all of a sudden you're dead.

Hah, I had this game when I was about 10 or 12, finished it in about three (brutally punishing) days, played through it about 10 more times after that. Just an incredible game for the time. I never did care for Heart of the Alien though, checked it out a few years back and I could barely get past the first 8 screens. Seemed a lot more punishing and finicky than the original for some reason.

... I want this, but my main gaming PC is running Windows 7.
This is... unpleasant, and a great example of why I prefer console gaming to PC gaming.

@Doctor John Smith :
Oh, delightful! Judging by the time stamps he posted that after me though, so I don't feel entirely stupid- just excited to get home and download it. :)

This game is super awesome.
I went back to play it the other day, thinking "I'm an adult now, I should be able to figure out what I couldn't when I was 10." Nope.
I need to bust this out again with a FAQ, to get past the section I got stuck at both times.

Awesome game. There was a sequel called "Heart of the Alien" where you play as the alien and it included "Another World". Good old Sega CD.

So many fond memories of Another World. Rolling in the tunnels hoping not to get crushed by sand coming down, putting up the shields with your going when in laser fire fights, going into the arena with the tank and wrecking havoc.
I would also love a release of Flashback too. I loved both those games growing up.

I agree, where the hell is the PSN/XBL support? I don't play games an awful lot on my laptop (not to mention it's Windows 7) but I'd buy the game in an instant if it appeared on the PlayStation Store.

You know, the OS has been released for 5 months, right?

BTW, the special edition of the game has been available for years. It runs natively under Windows XP, and runs in high-resolution modes. What you see above is a pic of it. The 15th anniverary was actually in 2006.

Wow. I remember playing a very short demo of this back when it was brand new. I never bought the full game, though (I seem to remember being too busy with Wolfenstein 3-D and The Legacy: Realm of Terror). I might give it a shot this time.

...for some reason I thought it was called Fade to Black. (or Fade 2 Black?)

Fade to black was actually a sequel to Flashback. A game that played and looked a whole lot like Another World but had no relations besides that.

ahh yes Flashback was it. Fade 2 Black was the crappy 3d sequel? I think I played that too and it sucked.

Wow, really?
I've owned like 4 or 5 Genesis carts of Flashback over the years, and I never even knew it had a sequel.
Doesn't sound like I missed much, though.

I used to play this game a lot back ing the day, on my Amiga 500. It's still one of my best gaming memories to date.
I still remember the feeling of awe i had when i first watched the intro to the game, it was so mind blowing visually at that time, animations where fluid, just looked damn good.

This game was so surreal, so exciting, and so believable that I actually panicked like never before when that black silhouette of a beast chased me. Man, talk about good old times, what a classic!

This has been up on the original developer's site for years (for pretty much the same price, as I recall). It's nice to see it added to the GOG.com collection where people can see it.

The anniversary edition *should* contain both the updated and classic graphics. It's been awhile since I've tried the demo, though, so someone else could probably confirm.

I've replayed this game so often, I can finish it in under an hour, but I still love it to death. I just wish it were on XBLA or PSN instead.
