I am boycotting this game because Dr. Robotnik is a racist stereotype of overweight men that look like walruses.

I'm going to boycott your boycott because it falsely accuses Sonic of portraying Dr. Robotnick as a walrus.

(Yes, I know the definition of boycott)

The boycott is stupid, but I am getting tired of this eggman crap... That wasn't his name... Its no different than if they changed bowsers name to turtleman...

I'm pretty sure it's always been both. Ivo Robotnik is his REAL name but the characters make fun of him by calling him Eggman, I guess...

That being said.. it's not "Doctor Eggman's Mean Bean Machine" :p

It's a pretty known fact that Eggman's his real name. Robotnik was only his US name on older games. They've tried to tie both names with the "Eggman is just a nickname" thing, but I'm not sure if that has worked at all.

Drew's got it spot on.

King Koopa was the Americanized name of Bowser, as was Dr. Robotnik for Eggman.

American Sonic and Japanese Sonic games had a very different storyline, mostly because of the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons. When Sega merged the continuities in Sonic Adventure (getting rid of all that Mobius weirdness) they standardized the names, making Eggman the "official" name of Robotnik.

So all in all, it's Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik

What about the enemies being called badNIK's in both the Japanese and American versions?

Also, Professor Gerald Robotnik is his grandfather and Maria Robotnik is his cousin. I'm pretty sure his REAL name is Ivo Robotnik and Eggman is just a nickname :x

If I remember, Eggman was also used in one of the older sonic cartoons as well, and the Sonic Movie also was released that same year and referred to Robotnik as eggman.

Anyways, does it really even matter?

I don't know, HighFiveJesus, seems to me that " who gives a **** " must be pretty close to the worst answer to any question, giving the person who says it a small amount of masturbatory "I'm better than you because I don't care" pleasure, while offering nothing of benefit or interest to anyone else whatsoever.

I would be inclined to agree with you in almost any case OTHER than a debate about a video game characters name in a game as trivial as "Sonic the Hedgehog". And said boycott for that matter.

Seriously dudes. There has to be things that matter more to you in life. I normally would never speaks such words, but this is a new low.

if i remember correctly, the intro comic before the first sonic came out sonic was a brown hedgehog and robotnik/eggman was a scientist named Dr. kintobor...which is obviously robotnik spelled backwards.....sonic turns blue from running too fast...some freak accident happens wich turns kintobor into robotnik...an egg shaped evil person since kinobor loved eggs.

i read this in a egm or game pro damn near 20 years ago.....couldnt tell you guys if its actually part of the story though.

Even if Dr. Robotnik and the Mobius storyline aren't true to the Japanese original, they are true to my memories. Therefore, my sense of nostalgia wants those back.

yeah, that was Sega of America's attempt at establishing backstory, which they were allowed to do wholly separately from Sega Japan, but when Sonic finally got more story-focused with Adventure, there had to be a reckoning in terms of aligning these things, so Sonic getting his powers from an experiment (which actually made a lot of sense, though i found the whole Mobius thing really strange too) disappeared.

True, my friend's little sister is basically obsessed with Sonic... She keeps going on about crazy shit, all I can say is "Uhh.... Well, I know that you're a hedgehog and an evil fat guy captured little animals that you're trying to rescue". She hasn't even played any of the Genesis games.

So I'm guessing the majority of fans that are still left are between the ages of 11-14

Nah, the haters mostly just shun Sonic at every turn. Calling all his games lame or sucky without even playing it. Constantly saying that SEGA is killing the series over and over without even trying it (or claiming they tried it because they have for 5 minutes).

That's not that bad. That's just denial.

....haters of the Wii on the other hand...
Denial is one thing, reusing statements that have already been beaten 1,000x over and bringing up hundreds of incorrect assumptions that are supported by extremely biased websites is a whole 'nother thing.

The "The Adventure Continues in 2010" video on the site just highlights how much worse the new sonic looks next to the older incarnations. They've turned a fast, sleek and iconic look into an awkward, slow-legged gumby-universe character. Being able to see less of his face (and his face having less character when you can see it) is a detraction too. I can't imagine why they wouldn't just stick with the same design and simply up the resolution and fluidity of the animations.

Reminds me a lot of the horrendous Guybrush look in SOMI:SE.. In both cases it looks like they've gone for rendered 3D characters, presumably to cut animation costs.
