BAFTA announces 2010 Video Games Awards winners, goes batty for Batman

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts handed out its 2010 Video Games Awards in London this evening, but it was a resident of Gotham City who came away the big winner. Although Uncharted 2 bagged yet more trophies -- Best Action Game, Best Use of Audio, Best Story and Best Original Score -- Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham Asylum came away as the Academy's choice for Best Game of 2009.

Other notable winners include Flower (Artistic Achievement), LittleBigPlanet PSP (Best Handheld Game) and Wii Sports Resort (Best Family Game). You can see the full list of winners by category after the break. Congrats, Bats!

congrats to Rocksteady, they produced a great game that unfortunately for them was overshadowed by the colossus that is Uncharted 2. good to see they got the props they deserved.

Yeah, Uncharted 2 was great, but it's nice to see Arkham Asylum get some sort of recognition.

Well deserved, B:AA was my personal GOTY for 2009.

Well deserved! I think Naughty dog have already filled about every shelf they have with GOTY's and various awards so they can let another developer have this one lol. Cant believe Assassin's creed 2 didn't get any GOTY awards though.

I think Assassin's Creed II just got overlooked by all the other games.

Also, is it just me or does ACII look worse than the first one?

while ACII was an excellent game, this year was outstanding in general for quality games.

its about midway through this gen's life-cycle and where we as the consumers are truly benefiting from all the developers getting more and more comfortable with pushing the limits on each system.

with all the great games released this past year and upcoming titles its breeding a 'quality' war between everyone. bring em on!

I haven't played the first one in so long, the graphics in Assassin's creed 2 aren't exactly impressive but it has alot to render so I'll forgive it for that. Although still has a little too much screen tear for my liking and the FPS can drop dramatically.

Graphically? It must just be you.

*AC2 Spoilers* There's a segment in the game where you play through a portion of Acre from the first game, and it looks like the team reused the art assets from the first game. It's considerably blurrier (lower res textures everywhere), the lighting model looks more simplistic, etc.

MW2? This is a disgrace.

Oh cmon, it really is a good game despite it's flaws. Not quite GOTY but good nonetheless. You guys are just as bad as those people that say "lolololol Hal0 is overrated!!!1!"

Oh, I didn't know that. I thought the soundtrack was amazing. In fact, all Pixeljunk games have good music.

Glad to see Flower get recognition, though I think it should have won best original score at least once in all the awards. It really was a huge part of what made the game so great.

Rocksteady is based in North London. There's your answer.

So why didn't they give it to Guerilla for KZ2?

And they've given it to BioWare in the past.

Speaking of KZ2, it's a huge disappointment that it got so overlooked. I love that game.

Besides the fact that Killzone 2 was not as critically acclaimed as Batman: AA, Guerilla is based in Amsterdam.

Oh, well, I guess I am believing the other grand conspiracy, that Killzone 2 was not good.

I actually enjoyed it immensely. It was the game that got me to get a PS3.

Although, lets get real, the best game of the year was Shatter. Am i wrong?

Am I the only one that doesn't get why Shatter is such a big deal? Sure the music and visuals were great but I found the gameplay to be kinda boring.

You left out Strategy which was won by Empire: Total War. Even though Dom Jolly seemed confused as to what strategy games are.

U2 was my personal goty with B:AA a close second - congrats to Rocksteady.

MW2? 5 hr campaign with a stupid story and a glitch filled multiplayer mess - easily the most overrated game in recent memory

MW2 was a good game but nothin worth GotY, might as well put Halo:ODST up as well, 6 hours story and needs multiplayer to give it any life past 1 weekend.

Modern Warfare 2...seriously?..sheez!

With the obvious exception of Goldeneye, Batman: Arkham Asylum must be the only licensed game to have received such a prestigious, Game of the Year type award.

Obviously The British Academy of Film and Television Arts would pick a British developer like Rocksteady Studios over Naughty Dog which is American.

Uncharted 2 beat Batman in Action, Original Score, Story & Use Of Audio but Batman won Game Of The Year? Because Naughty Dog isn't British?
