Well, this is a surprise. Square Enix's iPhone RPG Chaos Rings looks, in terms of design, like one of its PlayStation-era RPGs and, in terms of graphical quality, better than one of its PlayStation-era RPGs. Watch the trailer for the Media Vision-developed game after the break, and you'll see what we mean. Dynamic camera angles, detailed -- and stylish -- monsters and characters, and interesting prerendered environments are all on display.
What's nice is that since RPGs don't really require precise controls, we can semi-safely get interested in this game without having our hopes dashed by the platform. It could still turn out to be terrible, but it isn't guaranteed to be.
Don't wait for the Windows 7 phone. I have Zune and no matter how hard I try I can't escape this feeling like I'm a huge queer for owning one. If you have to get a "smart phone" get an iPhone like everyone else.
I have to wonder how big a game like this is. FF7 was several CD's, and this seems more complicated than that. So it could conceivably be pretty big (1GB or more) - an important thing to keep in mind for a device with a fixed amount of space that also acts as a PMP.
But do you have a Zune HD? Bc I hear they are the bees' knees. And WP7 is supposed to be the phone version of the ZHD interface.
Personally, I had the iPhone 2G, skipped the 3G and got a 3GS. They've been great phones, but I'll probably be getting an Android phone next due to Apple's insistance on not supporting Adobe. Also, 3rd iteration in, and viewing YouTube videos over 3G on the 3GS is utter crap. The videos are compressed as hell. I just watched the above video, and while I got the idea, I have no idea how good the graphics are.
Get an iPod Touch and a Droid or N1. I honestly think Apple is hitting their ceiling with the 3GS, because Adobe is putting Flash on every other smartphone platfotm (minus pre 7 WinwMo).
I would recommend keeping your Verizon phone (which has superior service to AT&T) and just getting an iPod touch for $199. You get the full app store without having to have a $100+ cell phone with a plan that's almost touching $100/mo BEFORE even factoring in the price of apps (games like this are guaranteed to be about $10 a piece).
That's what I did about a year and half ago and it's worked out great. Lots of extra money to actually buy apps. Just my two cents.
There's a reason why you don't see many games on Android. Because the OS is on so many different kind of devices, it's hard for developers to make a game for one specific phone. Especially when the install base isn't all that big.
When you make a game or application for the iPhone/Touch you KNOW millions of people will have the ability to use it.
NaeemTHM: Makes sense. Oh well, I didn't get my phone as a gaming device anyway. I bought it primarily to use as a phone. Internet browsing and free GPS was a lot higher on the list for me than gaming when I bought it.
While the Android Market is simply chock-full of games and applications, it is sad to say that the majority of the applications are verily shit. And while wading through said shit, it is often nigh impossible to determine the quality applications. Though they exist, they are buried in the mire of applications with titles like "Lines game" and "aHamsterGoHome".
I'm currently running a Droid because I am unwilling to give up Verizon to get an iPhone. I recognize that I could get an iPod Touch, but I loath the idea of carrying two touchscreen devices at the same time. My pockets already abound and overflow with devices and keys, I need no more reason to return to wearing cargo pants.
However, give me the Droid with the Apple App Store, or a Verizon iPhone with a physical keyboard, and I would have a horrible time deciding between the two.
I carry a G1 and a touch in my pockets sometimes. And when I dont, my touch is usually in the car because I don't feel like listening to music for some reason. I gave up the idea of my phone being an all encompassing device that does everything because the minute you try to do everything with it, you realize you only get 5 minutes to do it. I fear missing an important call in the evening because I was listening to music or playing games on my phone in the morning so I designate my phone for phone / internet / GPS use only... just the essentials. And carrying both isnt that much of a problem unless you're a fan of skinny jeans (LOL if you are).
This looks amazing. It's too bad that the iphone doesn't have another option for control other than touch/tilt. Don't get me wrong, I know touch controls can work, they're just cumbersome when you HAVE to use your fingers on such a small device. However, this would be fantastically suited to the ipad. What's that? It's just "a great big ipod touch"? Yeah. I know. Maybe you underestimate the power of the words "great" and "big". Those are powerful changes to apply to ANY device.
It's a shame I can't stand JRPG turn-based combat. I would probably love the stories of these games but I just get so bored and frustrated with the battle system.
The tech looks strikingly similar to FF7 - pre-rendered backdrops with 3D characters running along them, 3D turn-based battle system... Heck, I think FF7's models were less detailed - I know the textures were. Haven't played FF8 in a long time - might actually be closer to that.
As much as I'd jump on a re-release of the PS-generation FF games (7/8/9) on the iPhone, I'm rather glad they went with a new story.
So long as it's not priced stupidly, this looks like it'll be a definite buy for me.
Looks prety good. Here's hoping for a return to the glory days of old school rpg's. The only fault I notice is that the battles seem to be having some slowdown in this trailer. Hope it gets smoothed out before release.
Every time I've purchased a new phone, it has been for battery life and range. Playing pretty well awesome looking RPG's on a phone that I would use for important matters does not seem like a good idea to me.
this looks good... and tempting me to buy an iphone. But i'm torn between the iphone (which is starting to be more gaming-centric) or getting the upcoming Sony Ericsson Playstation phone that would play PSP/PSone full games for the PSN. And with android OS added for the apps to make it sweeter....
Oh MY GOD !!! in 3 weeks Im getting a iPad too to go along with my iPhone 3Gs. I cant wait to play quality RPGS on that thing. I have to say.....Can you imagine Final Fantasy 1 & 2 on the iPad. SquareEnix, has found a sweet spot. Keep up tthe good work. Bring out Secret of Mana !
