Miyamoto confirms Pikmin 3 development 'well underway'

The Official Nintendo Magazine UK is hanging out at tonight's BAFTA Video Game awards, and has punched into its Twitter account that not only did it get to talk to one Shigeru Miyamoto, but that he's confirmed Pikmin 3 is in development and "well under way." Over a year ago, the game was rumored to be released a week-and-a-half from now, but we'll presume it's not quite that far along in development.

Still, good to hear that the game is still going on, considering that we've only seen the barest sprouts of information about it so far. Maybe Miyamoto should give his team a 30-day time limit within which to finish the game, and see how they feel about that.

More and more games to play!

Makes sense, anyway. If we could trust Shiggy's word before, serious development on the game started around June of last year, based on E3 interviews at the time

Hopefully it will be more like the first Pikmin. That game was and still is amazing.

I'm hoping that it'll be more like the second, minus the second explorer. I really didn't like the 30-day time limit.

Not sure why anybody would think the first is better. The second improved on all existing systems, while removing the time limit.

I agree with you, the first was superior in my opinion. The 30 day time limit made replaying the game a blast, because you could go back and figure out how to be more efficient and get off the planet quicker. The second was still great, but lacked the punch the first had. Anyway, another addition to the series will be amazing no matter what, I can't wait to get my hand on it.

Wii 2 launch title?

One of the last generation of Wii games, matching Project Sora and Dragon Quest X, and, if my estimation is correct, Starfox.

Itll be cool if they had wii 2 launch title, i just hope you can turn in your wii to get a discount or transfer data

never played either pikmin game. is it like Brutal Legend at all (RTS gameplay only obviously)

...not really. It's mostly just throwing your soldiers at them, calling them back, lining them up, throwing again. Making sure you're keeping an eye on your surroundings and thinking out which would be the best to throw at the right enemy.

If you've played Little King's Story, it's like that, since that's what LKS's battle was based off of.
If you haven't, go play it.

Overlord's core mechanic is pretty much a Pikmin clone. Great games too.

I'd buy a WiiHD just to play a Pikmin 4 that looks like the Pikmin 2 clay art.

That said, Miyamoto made my day. Waited too long for Pikmin 3, hopefully there's an actual co-op mode this time around too.

I can't even count how many people I've pissed off by saying that I've never gotten the appeal of Pikmin, or why there's so much love for it.

But, that is me, and I am happy that this is under production for people who want it. :)

I'm still waiting for the new play control Pikmin 2... Any release date on that one? I loved the first one.

Are the new play controls a big improvement? I haven't played Pikmin before but have been wanting to but I don't know if I should buy are really cheap used Gamecube copy or if its worth it to spring the extra money for the Wii controls?

Widescreen is nice but the sounds are a little off, not a major issue but whatever. I own both anyway =p

A Pikmin game on the Wii sounds awesome. You know? I think I'd love a DS Pikmin game too. The idea of controlling my Pikmin with the stylus sounds sweet.

Also, the picture for this article is awesome. Those photo-realistic buggers are precious. It's almost like they're real.

2011 or what?

Nintendo have a nack for releasing game just after announcing them. NSMBWii was a total surprise, and it released like 2 months after announcing it.

While i am a HUGE Pikmin fan and will buy this day 1, i do however think the Pikmin franchise would look amazing on a HD Wii console in 1080p.

True, but i will stress that this is by no means an announcement. This is like how Zelda Wii was "announced" at last E3. This is certainly a more definitive statement, but not an announcement.

Nintendo need a game for Christmas 2010. I'm wondering whether the intention is, when - er I mean if - Zelda gets delayed, we get Pikmin 3 instead. :)

Aww crap! How am I going to find all the time for all these games? I'm still playing NSMBWii and Spirit Tracks, and I've just bought the Metroid Prime Trilogy, then will have Super Mario Galaxy 2 in June, and Metroid Other M possibly in August, then Zelda next Christmas!

Awesome. Though, I worry if it continues to become more complicated. What was great about the first one was that the pikmin were few and the fun was plenty. Pikmin 2 - took away the time limits which was good but added more pikmins so..

i have been waiting for this news since late 2007 xD finally i love you guys :D

As much as I'm not a Nintendo fan, I wont get a Wii, and news like this doesn't really affect me, if they mange to get up Galaxy 2, Metroid, Zelda, and Pikmin 3 this year, it could probably put this over the edge as the best year in gaming since 2007 when combined with what Sony, Microsoft, and the third parties are coming to the table with. The last two years were solid, but ultimately disappointing compared to 2007 which was epic (Halo 3, Mass Effect, Uncharted, COD4, Orange Box, Ratchet & Clank, etc).

6 years, 6 long years I have awaited this news. 5 years ago, I was hoping. 4 years, hope fading. 3 years, frustration began. 2 years ago I had lost hope. 1 year ago I had given up on humanity. But this... this awakens an ancient feeling of joy within my deprived heart.

Alright that was a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point

WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO FIGHT CATS! =D
