Nintendo is getting real complacent Now that xbox and ps3 have motion controls, what is the point of owning a wii, outside of the very rare good one from nintendo?

I bought a wii when it first out. Wanna know how much use I get out of it?

Right between "little" and "none". So much potential go underutilized.

Well maybe now, sure. Though you can't ignore the fact the Wii has been out for years and all this jazz has been announced recently.

Plus, It'll probably be a while before anything is worth while will be released on Move and Natal.

this whole "what is the point of owning a Wii now" makes the assumption that Wii owners *want* to upgrade, but can't because the "better" consoles don't have motion controls. It doesn't take in the assumption that the winning philosophy of Wii has more to do than just the controls.

Which isn't just you, this is a message that a lot of the game media has been spouting.

The wii has been out for a while now, that's true. Also, to be fair, I never said that natal or the move will be superior to the wii controls. Just seems like they are trying to capture some of the casual market from nintendo. Nothing so far has gotten me all excited for these borrowed control schemes.

My point was that, personally, I haven't used it nearly as much as my xbox or ps3. Partly, because most of the 3rd games that come out for wii are utter garbage. The main titles from Nintendo are usually fun, but it takes forever for them to come out. I was excited about the new metriod, but now it's turned into an on rails shooter hybrid, real disappointment after the last metroid was so fun.

I find it hilarious that he claims not to force a control scheme on developers... EXCEPT THAT THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A FORCED CONTROL SCHEME. Nintendo has basically forced motion control in every game that isnt developed by their first party studios. Not that it matters of course since 90% of the games are simple slapped together party games or weak aerobics trainers.

sure....and I suppose it has nothing to do with the fact that forcing people to buy 1-4 of those $20 adapters has nothing to do with it.....I mean think about it.....if the 4 player party games REQUIRED that then chances are they wouldn't sell as much....

its not like Sony forced devs to use Move.....more like they gave it to them and the devs were like "hey this is something NEW for the PS3 and we could port over a lot of a Wii games and maybe actually BREAK EVEN!!"

With Nintendo the Motion+ wasn't that big of a deal to third parties simply because third parties aren't a big deal to Nintendo....

Let's not forget that the Wii is SD, meaning devs don't have to worry so much about making everything in 720p and what not. The built-in limitations make it cheaper for developers.

This generally means that they need to sell less copies of the game for Wii than they would if they had made it an HD game for the PS3 or X360.

Not even classic controller!
Most people I play the Wii with prefer using just the Wiimote + Nunchuk with no motion controls (maybe IR pointer, but that's about it).

How many games use the classic controller or the GC controller? I can only think of a few first party titles off hand.

Personally I wish every major (first-party) game would've included the option to at least use both the Wii Remote and the GC controller. I mean I would love to have the updated+widescreen version of MP1/2 but without the forced motion controls, however good of an implementation they may have.

The Classic Controller isn't as necessary as people think it is. There's a good number of people that don't play the Virtual Console, and there's very few (zero) disc games where the Classic Controller is the only choice of controller.
Some people (like I) rarely use the classic controller.

If anything, the Nunchuk should come bundled with each controller.
...I know there's several games that don't use the Nunchuk at all, but there's like a 10:1 ratio of games that DO use it.

And yet that's exactly what they've done with the DS/Wii.

Worse, they forced it on the gamers, and eventually PS3/360 owners.

Wii has the option of ignoring motion controls. Who says they didn't? Remote and Nunchuk, remote sideways, there's lots that can be done that's non-motion and that comes right out of the box, and did so from the beginning.

Possibly they don't force it on the devs so that the devs could figure out whatever controls they wanted.

Most of the best games released on the Wii don't even use Motion Control.
"What's the point of a motion control system then?"
To introduce it to the gaming industry so they could improve off of it, yet advertise it as a main selling point so that people will see the console as a motion control console to care enough to use it (unlike the PS Eye its first few years).

It's not forced on them at all. A ton of people don't use the Wii Wheel style controls, people prefer the classic controller to waggle in fighting games, and several games have come out with several control options available.
But despite this, motion control has made its mark, and it is seen as an interesting improvement when done correctly.
It's an enticing experiment.

As for "forcing several people to purchase WM+ or more controllers", no one's forcing them to. You don't have to buy the game that needs 4 WM+ or even the one that needs 4 controllers. A poor excuse, but there's enough variety out there to ignore buying WM+ until there's enough games that come out for it.
It is a backhanded thing though: "You wanna' play a quality controller game? Buy these! They're cheap! ...loser."
...sneaky and backhanded, but effective.

The industry force this on itself.

Nintendo blew everyone out of the water with trendy/clever marketing. Everything from ads featuring Lisa Kudrow selling the "ease of use" angle to the low price point made the Wii what it is.

Of course, as usual, the people who make a living reading those sort of tea leaves only saw the image of people flailing their arms in front of their TVs. Shortly thereafter, their irises were comically replaced by dollar signs.

Never mind the explosion of cheap/free casual gaming on phones and PCs; it's the waggling that made the Wii a hit, for sure. Those boneheads at Nintendo! If only they'd thought to charge more for this futuretime technology! Their folly will be made plain soon enough.

Really if you buy a Wii for good third party games then you really missed the point I think. Nintendo makes great games, some of the best, that's why you get a Nintendo system. You get a PS3/Xbox for everything else, that's how I look at it. Though, don't get me wrong there's always a few gems on Nintendo systems not made by Nintendo, but that's just the icing on the cake.

How is this any different from Mircosoft/Sony? They both have options, and you can make a game for their controller, or you can make a game for their motion controls. I don't count Microsoft Game Studios or SCE(A)'s in-house developments as "forced", If you own a company, you can make whatever ya want.

Sony has games like Flower that rely on the sixaxis controls, then they also have games like Metal Gear Solid 4 where they are just used for smaller things (like grenades), and finally they have plenty of games that don't even use the built in sixaxis controls.

"Except the Wiimote IS the default controller."

And the sixaxis IS the default controller... Move isn't.
You CAN play a good number of Wii games with just the Wiimote, just like you can play a good number of PS3 games with just the sixaxis. Eventually there will be Move-only games, much like there's only Wiimotion+ games.
...though if you were to argue "Nunchuks!" I can't defend that. Lots of games can play without it, but tons are better played with it.

Except for the games that don't support the Classic or GC controllers...

I miss PSO madly. I love co-op RPGs. Because of these facts, I begrudgingly put down $60 to preorder Monster Hunter Tri. Ironically, it's a game that completely lacks motion control, yet it also doesn't support Gamecube controllers.

That's not entirely on point, but whatever. This is:

These claims of "not forcing" control schemes on developers ring hollow. Has Reggie seen a Nintendo controller in the past 15 years? You know there's a screw or two loose in their controller design department when the Gamecube's Playschool inspired buttons are the most similar to contemporary controllers.

I'm not saying there's something wrong with trying to innovate in controller design, or being quirky for the sake of quirkiness, but Nintendo has been making controllers that require unique attention from developers for a looong time.

The problem is just that Nintendo isn't cramming motion down some developers' throats, or at least cramming motion plus down their throats. There've been a lot of missed opportunities, and that comes from poor leadership

Nintendo did force Sandlot to use Motion Plus for Zangeki no Reginliev.

I agree, but it's still a little early for M+. I don't think many developers have really had the time to build many games around it yet.

Games like The Conduit were supposed to use it, but it was so late into the games development that they couldn't just tack it onto the existing weapons, and they couldn't really go back and add in tons of melee weapons to use it either.

I think we'll probably see a lot more M+ games at this E3, and more in 2011.
