To most developers, I'm sure the "contractor" idea is scary as hell. Especially those who live in an area with only 1 or 2 studios.... Moving for a job is one thing, but relocating in an endless cycle is quite the other...

Please just make a new Killer Instinct and Jet Force Gemini. That's all I ask.

the thing with Avatars though is that everyone hated the idea, then it grew on them... I love the little fella now...

What kills me about Killer Instinct was other than the digitized (remember when that was a BUZZword!?) graphics and killer voice, Killer Instinct wasn't really a deep fighter or button masher.

String along combo's as long as you can or c-c-c-combo breaker!!!
...
That's it; that's the entire game!

Honestly, if Mortal Kombat can't succeed then Killer Instinct sure as hell isn't. StreetFighter IV at least has an intricate gameplay system to make it challenging.

A wicked-sick voice and digitized graphics aren't a sell now-a-days.

i think the approach should be more along the lines of open more studios and hire more permanent staff, and keep expanding. Unless they are planning on hiring people to work via the internet i think its unfair to demand your future employees to continually travel to a destination for short term labour, only to be not promised work in the coming years.

Doesn't every company in every industry deal with issues estimating time to completion on projects and, in turn, budget? At just about every job I've ever had, I've been asked to estimate how long projects will take. And I've never worked in the video game business.

Yes. I'm a developer in the business software world and in the last stages of a project like that right now. Accurately estimating cost and development times for software is a difficult art, especially when you're just starting out.

This is exactly why I have been working as a contractor for the past 6 Months, there is now virtually No long term work. Lucky for me I have some good background stuff on my CV but new guys are having a bloody nightmare getting a job. On the plus side I charge a bloody fortune now and make much more money.

"The developer hopes to adopt a method akin to the film industry, hiring contract staff for the duration of a project, rather than trying to maintain a large, consistent workforce."

Isn't that the development method that Square-Enix uses too?

Sounds more like the Oddworld Inhabitants and Wideload Games method. SE is mostly known for that because of Enix and Armor Project's working relationship, no?

Wait, Rare still matters?

...Wait, Rare still EXISTS? I'm pretty sure they haven't made anything since Nuts and Bolts.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure if game developers all got together for a Relevance Party, Rare's invite would get "mysteriously lost in the mail."

Kinda hard not to underestimate / be optimistic about budgets as that is the only way for a (third party) developer to get a deal. It's usually easier to try to negotiate more money when the development is underway and progressing well, even if that might also result in some delays.

This contract labour approach is one of the main things killing the film FX industry.
