Sounds like they give you a component of the game like that's finished (or near finished) like the Multiplayer. But since your paying to be in it you have the benefit of keeping the rank when the full retail version comes out...

I don't know, I thought it sounded more like regular old expansion packs/DLC but of the "standalone" variety. So, if I'm right, you buy a standalone-like part first, play through that, then EA uses feedback from that to make sure the retail game is better.

So imagine for example if you were to buy something like side missions in Mass Effect that you could play before the retail game (a perfect opportunity to play "fill in the gaps" for any story elements). Then, once you're done playing those side missions, and raging all over EA's inbox over how bad some element is while splurging over another part of their inbox about how good some other element is, EA takes note and alters the retail game to fix these problems (or, you know, say "screw you we don't have enough time").

Yeah. I can't say I agree with the practice, since it's pretty obvious they're doing it more for the money than the actual feedback (since that's what beta tests are for), but I guess at least it's not all bad.

I mean as long as the "PDLC" is unique original content that is fairly priced for what it offers, then... well it's still a 50/50 toss up.

Good idea only if there was a discount on the full. That way, I can get a taste of a game coming out, if I like it a lot, 'upgrade', if I only like the mini version a bit, keep that. But it essentially makes it cost 75 dollars for a game, which is stupid.

"I think that the plan is to release PDLC at $15 that has 3 - 4 hours of gameplay, so [it has] a very high perceived value, then [EA will] take the feedback from the community (press and players) to tweak the follow-on full game that will be released at a normal packaged price point."

I think this quote needs some tweaking to better reflect reality.

"I think that the plan is to release PDLC at $15."

There we go.

Maybe.... or maybe it will give us more micro-games like 1943.

If a DLC game offers a fair amount of uniqe content, then it's all good with me.

this line is funny: "so [it has] a very high perceived value,". Anytime a corporate jacket uses the words 'perceived value' you know you're about to be ripped off!

Value, even without an additional describer, is a term completely reliant on perception.

@Jonafun

you're right, companies see "perceived value" as equal to "actual value". The most important thing to the company is that you think it's good value/good product - whether or not those things are true is inconsequential, unless of course, a company gets caught in it's lie, then the product is a failure.

There's a small book called "All Marketers Are Liars" by Seth Godin that really opened my eyes. The unfortunate thing is that these lies are promoted as 'good' things within companies!!

Adam, I think maybe you misunderstood. There is no "actual value". Value itself is subjective. It's why some reviewers give a game a 6/10 and others might give the same game a 9/10.

For example, I thought Flower was well worth the $10 I spent on it, but a lot of people felt that the "actual value" of the game was less than that to them. There is no real or actual value, only the value that we perceive a product to be worth.

So, I might think this "PDLC" is worth the $10-15 it costs, while others might say it's not worth a single penny. The same holds true for play time. I've spent over 400 hours playing FFX, but I know people who beat it in under 20. To them it might not hold the same value that it does to me.

Demos are not worth any amount of money. If you're going to charge for them, you may as well just start raising game prices.

Scene at Costco food cart:
"Have a sample, it's only $5. Here's a slip of paper that guarantees you a shot at buying the actual product when we get it in next month."

You can't resell a demo, even after consuming and _____ing it out.

@sonicspike41

I understand what you are saying, and to a degree you're right, value is somewhat subjective (no one who hates video games is going to spend $60 on a video game!!), but not completely. For example, although some video games divide people on whether it's good, MOST fall with in a general consensus. Thus there is some (loose?) standard of value amongst those who play video games - and the more specific the genre, JRPG for example, the more tight the standard.

What Seth Godin says is that the product doesn't really matter, as long as people _feel_ it does what it states. In one example, riedel wine glasses went through a double-blind scientific tests to find if the product actually made wine test better (as the company claims), it failed miserably and yet (to Godin) the company is a triumph because people _feel_ that their wine tastes better in Riedel wine glasses.

That's perceived value (Riedel's can go +$100 a glass), when it's proven that wine tastes just as good in my $5 wine glasses that is real value.

then you must be really ignorant, how else are people going to get DLC for those two games if they didn't buy them new or have a "VIP Code" entered on their individual account?

I look at this as a way to charge you for a portion of a game on top of the $60 you'll pay on launch. It's only going to cost you more in the end. Yeah you don't HAVE to buy this but knowing your getting cheated out of a full game should be enough to say forget it all together.

Wow. I can't think of a single piece of DLC (aside from RB/GH songs, which are a completely different story) that made me say "Gee-golly, NOW it feels like the game is complete" instead of "Gee-golly, that was neat how I got a little more mileage out of an already solid game".

Yes, I say "Gee-golly" IRL. Don't hate.

Errrr...how about 2 "missing" chapters of Assassin's Creed 2. Sure, different publisher, but same idea. Consumers couldn't WAIT to put down the extra cash. When you repeatedly say "Hey, I'll spend my money frivolously," companies will come up with more and more ways to take your cash.

I hope it's something like a prologue, or an expansion pack that comes out before the game.

For example, if the Lost and Damned came out before GTA4 for like $15-20, that would be a good implementation of this. So it would be like a demo (get a feel for the controls, etc) but with expansion pack production values.

It has promise, but it's probably going to let me down.

We haven't seen anything like this yet (other then BF1943, which was awesome), but lets all just hate at EA, eh?
Of all the companies, EA is currently the least abusive right now (Activison is pimping 3 maps for 1200 points and Bioware 2's DLC was just an unlock code). Before we try to burn down their buildings, how about we wait to see what they actually do?
