No, it's a terrible game. It's a wonderful *toy*.

Games have some sort of structure and an endpoint. Toys just exist for the purpose of joy. I got this same sense from the JC2 demo, that I could definitely spend 100 hours blowing up everything on my own but the missions were going to piss me off.

I have to agree. When I played the demo I just caused enough damage to open up the black market then I grabbed a helicopter and parachute down guns blazing. I like the sandbox elements of this game but, the missions feel too much of "been there done that"...

Well, I could care less about the story. I want to meet my inside "14-year-old" (pryomaniac) and the "3-year-old" (yay toys!)

Was this pun at all intentional?

I really liked that list and I actually fired up the JC2 demo again to try some of the things you mentioned, but I really doubt you managed to drive a car off of a cliff at 4,600 mph. Just sayin'

They're totally different games. How could you possibly compare the demos???

As demos they can easily be compared. JC2 chose one of the best methods to do a demo, and by that I mean: "Here's a large chunk of land in a very very large world that you can play in. Do whatever you want. You have a half hour until we kick you out, forcing you to crawl back for more."

Meanwhile SC:Conviction was one of the worst demos I've ever seen. Now don't get me wrong, the game itself looks promising, and I'm probably gonna buy it, but the Demo was horrible. You interrogate a dude, you're given a brief tutorial section, and then you have two small areas to sneak through. The first area, if done properly, only takes about 15 seconds to clear. The second is only a little bit longer than that.

So yeah, the SC:C demo was terrible, and the JC2 demo was pure gold.

Agree with Hyperion. The Conviction demo showed what a great game there is there, but the demo was too little. This was more of a demo that should have been released at a convention where they only want people to play for 10 minutes and then the next person in line gets to go. While I am at home, and there is just me in line, let me play and roam for an hour or so.

There's actually a glitch to stop the timer.

Sooo, you're saying a perfect sandbox game is one with a lousy single-player story?

Unsurprisingly, I disagree. :)

Don't simplify his statement like that. I've never played a sandbox game with a fantastic story. The story -always- fails in comparison to what you can do within the sandbox. Every GTA game (even GTA IV as far as I'm concerned) has a fairly rubbish storyline with missions that are frequently boring and frustrating. The best part of the GTA series is being able to roam the city and cause destruction and panic - something this game excels in, apparently. it's a shame the developers felt the need to push in a half-assed story, because there's a lot you could do with a game like this to make the single-player campaign really fun and unique.

Eh...GTA IV's story was fantastic, and you have to give San Andreas credit: the coolest shit you could do in that game was mission related (rob a casino, assault an aircraft carrier, that wicked chase at the end on the fire-truck). Maybe what we mean here is that Just Cause 2 is the best sandbox ever, but it sucks as a game. "Sandbox Game" then becomes an oxymoron of sorts - a sandbox is a toy (Think Noby Noby Boy, Animal Crossing, and what this should have been), whereas a game provides goals and rewards for meeting those goals (more like your typical GTA/Saint's Row experience).

I guess what I'm saying is, "I voted for Nader! I hate all of you!"

Raf:

You lost me at "GTA IV's story was fantastic."

Because it wasn't.

Unless you like being forced to take your buddies on man dates?

If you made GTA a linear-style game, and removed the multiplayer, you'd be left with ONLY STORY, and it would be totally worthless.

"They're uniformly uninspired and far too many boil down to "drive this high-value person a very long distance in a very large car that controls like a bag of buttholes and apparently has a Flip Into Ravine pedal right next to the gas.""

You have finally figured out the mechanics behind EVERY action movie ever. Every car in every action movie as a Flip Into Ravine pedal right next to the gas. It all makes so much sense now...

So is the mission structure like GTA IV where they sort of dictate what you do next, or is it like Crackdown where by tooling around you'll run into where you can (or not) do a mission?

^This. There are soooo many good games to play that I haven't even started yet, but sometimes I feel like I need a game to play that I can just shut my brain off and have fun with for an hour.

This review is EXACTLY what I was looking for to push me over the edge to buy this game. I had heard that the missions weren't that great so I was questioning the purchase, but reading that I can "stand on top of a plane while I'm flying it just because it's cool" is what I needed to hear. Great review.

Great writeup Justin.

Actually glad that this game will probably end up with a mediocre metacritic rating. I'd love to grab it for 30 bucks or so just to toy around with. I played 2 sessions of the demo and didn't touch a single actual mission.

The demo was horrible. IMO a shining example of what NOT to do with a demo.

I was trying to get used to the controls and find the guns, and then it timed out.

So all the awesome Justin is talking about? Saw none of it. I didn't even find someone to shoot. Saw a shack and umm I think I fired the gun a couple of times at a target.

the demo is half an hour long (and time gets added when you blow stuff up). how the hell did it take you that long to figure out the controls?

anyway i had tons of fun with the demo, but probably won't buy the game/toy. maybe when it's dirt cheap a while from now.

I downloaded the demo off steam and I just could not enjoy it. I tried it with the xbox controller, keyboard and mouse and played it multiple times but I simply left it unimpressed everytime. I hated the stiff controls and bad aiming. The veichles controlled like crap and had no sense of speed which made getting places a pain in the ass I just don't get it at all.

I felt like that the first time I played, then the second time I tried the demo I found a gigantic armored car with unlimited minigun ammo and a giant cannon, and went on a giant rampage until I found a tiny stunt plane that I few all around getting low-flying bonuses while standing on the roof and then I spotted a helicopter ...

First time I played the demo I tried to play the story; the second time I just played the toy.
