I wonder what kind of sand box play naughty bear will compare. the grapple hook here is the absolute best, oh and there is a way to hitch a ride on a flying propane tank! just remember it explodes at the end of the trip.
the best sandbox play from gta was San Andreas with planes and bmx bikes, and flying cars, and with the flying jumping out w/wo parachute!

the only thing i didn't like about the demo was people just wouldn't die when you shoot them, when you get shot in the face you should die and the civilians i assume didn't have armor and yet they still would not die even running them over with the vehicle you just stole from them.

My only problem was that you didn't really go into much detail besides "don't play the story," but that doesn't matter since we have the demo, I guess.

Fantastic review joystiq! I love all the detail you give, about the control scheme, the gameplay, the graphics, the settings, the plot, etc....etc....etc.......

Exactly. Love the demo, but I see no reason to go beyond that.

That said,

demo was a lot of fun, but i actually got the impression that the structure would be different. As i walked around causing havok, it felt like i was already making progress in it. Maybe not.

Why is it so hard for sandbox game designers to come up with actually engaging, and less repetitive missions? Some missions in GTA4 were great, same for InFamous, but between them you have to endure hours of repetitive and dull stuff.

Sandbox =/= Story.
Blow stuff up > Missions.

That's why I'm getting the game. It's the anti-RPG. (or just rocket propelled grenades instead of role-playing gaming).

I was fortunate enough to play some of this at CES back in January at the NVIDIA booth. While it was certainly amazing, one thing about the grappling mechanic gave me some problems. The cord of the hook in the version I played wasn't a physics object, and as such wouldn't let me clothesline people off their bikes, something I really wanted to try.

Have any of you managed this trick, or know if it works?

Absolutely agree. I've been hearing people talk about this game for a while and upon playing the demo I kept on coming back for 30 minute chunks of fun. After renting it, however, I was a little put off by the uninspired missions and laughable cast of characters. But once I stopped completing missions and just went after 100% completes of settlements and bases, I started to love the game. Eventually I will have to complete the faction missions, but I'd rather just play in the sandbox.

Awesome review Justin, you are a king.
