The best cross-medium adaptations take liberties with the license to make the piece as entertaining as possible. If it were a literal translation, it likely wouldn't have been a great live action movie.. especially in 1993.

I liked it just because it was so ridiculous. I don't consider it faithful to the world of Mario, but that's what makes it good in my opinion. It's one of those things that's bad in a good way.

Try taking a step back and watching it without any expectations about how it should have been. Instead just try to laugh at how utterly ridiculous it is. It's kind of like "wow, what were they smoking" I guess.

As a kid I enjoyed it just for being Mario. As an adult I enjoy it for the "I can't believe they ever approved of this" factor. It's great!

I still have nightmares to this day watching it. I'm afraid that is something that will haunt me for the rest of my life.

Its just like the movie Speed 2, but instead of a boat its a bus.

Really, Sony has it the easiest, seeing as they own very successful movie studios. But even they haven't done any.
