Shagi,
Yes, and the NES was not the first home game console, but that is the one a lot of people credit for bringing videogames into everyone's homes because they were the most successful as everyone else was losing money and the public was dropping home gaming. Nintendo, while they did not invent motion controllers, popularized them enough that they created a market. They had the balls to base their home console around it.
Now with the more powerful consoles that had played it safe release their motion control devices, the public is prepared and will accept it more readily thus creating a popular input device that most everyone will adopt and developers can create games for that they know a large portion of the console base will buy.

King,
WTF does that have to do with anything? We are not talking about the gay ass "motion" that the PS3 put in their controller. We are talking about their new motion control "move" controllers.
Which, I never said it was new technology. I have been using accelerometers during R&D tests for over ten years and they were around well before that, so that isn't something "new" either. This is finding new ways to use existing technology. Who the FUCK cares who had it first. This is about innovation, something completely different.

I upvoted you. I understand where you were going with that.......you just forgot the "priceless" at the end.
However I disagree with your appraisal of the tech.
I think there are lot of possibilities with motion control on the HD consoles. Look for my comment below, but also, and mainly, watch the video. The multiple video feeds portion is HUGE. With the power of the PS3 (or xbox360) and the new motion control devices (and Project Natal), the options for developers are huge! A lot of cool immersive things can be done on both of these consoles.
Again, thanks Nintendo for introducting the new tech and showing it can work! You da man!

So, still wanna tell me that the Move is a Wiimote ripoff?
Anyone? anyone? Bueller? Bueller?
Or that Natal is so different?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4zyjLyBp64
Oh and Chris Grant, you had some very good questions but why were did you act shocked when Dr Marks showed you those tech demos from the early 2000's? Like you had no idea that Sony has been working on this for a decade and that it was NOT a knee-jerk reaction to Nintendo?
Do you not have access to the same internet as I do?
Dr. Richard Marks acted very humble even though you could plainly see that he had the idea of how BIG motion gaming would be years before Nintendo introduced the Revolution.
That is class, take notes MS and Mr. Greenberg

Give credit where its due. Nintendo gets the credit because they had the balls to make it the default controller. No one really knows how long Nintendo has worked on motion controls so you cannot really say Sony was doing it first. The key here is that Nintendo came to market with a very solid well implemented product and Sony not. All the research in the world doesn't mean anything if you cannot come to market. Big companies like Sony, Nintendo and MS research on many things. Being able to bring those projects to market is something totally different. Sony needed Nintendo to show them how to bring their ideals to market which is still being a follower.
It really does not matter if Sony was working on this tech in the 90s/ early 2000. There is a youtube video showing MS working on the same tech for the PC in the late 80s/ early 90s using a green screen monitor. The difference here is that Sony probably would not have come out with Move this generation or maybe never, if not for the Wii and that includes MS as well.
You really cannot give Sony any credit for the Move. We will never know if the product would have come out to market if not for the Wii. Even still, Sony has aped the Wii design which show us that they really didn't do to much over the Wii blue print.
I would say that MS is taking the big balls risk like Nintendo because their system doesn't copy Wii technology. Natal will be on a island of its own and it can rule or drown based on the games for the system. Sony is still playing it very safe since they have the Wii success to fall back on.
So to answer Killjebus question, Yes Sony is still the copy cat because if Sony was so confident of the technology, they would not have taken so long to get something out the door.

With the only problem being that Sony twice released the parts of the Tech that made sense at the time. The part that they released HAD no handheld controllers much like Natal. At that time there was no other tech like it that had any kind of traction in the market and there were over 50 games that used it.
There were a number of things that didn't work as smoothly as they would have liked due to the power of the machine and both Sony and Nintendo adjusted accordingly. When Sony had a more powerful machine they increased the fidelity of the camera and added more inputs. Nintendo who didn't have much more power added more fine tuned controls by having an adaptable controller with buttons rather than the specific props that Sony was testing with.
Sony realised that they could only go so far without buttons and Nintendo realised that they could only go so far without fidelity.
Nintendo has done a hell of a lot by shipping for all intents and purposes as the only input to their console.
Microsoft has done a hell of a lot by scrapping down a lot of research and parts into a consumer commodity
I don't see why you can't simply state that Sony did a hell of a lot in following the goal of motion gaming, getting it into millions of homes then expanding both in the original direction as well as bringing it to the precision and speed of traditional gaming.
If you want to hate on Motion Gaming then you have that right but to say that 10 years of work is a knee jerk no recognition "fall back on Wii success" jerk ass move IS a no recognition jerk ass move
Jerk

Ok, I'm sorry, but if you're trying to hype a new product by letting the media play with your tech demos, you should /probably/ put a little bit of Q/A work into the demos/hardware first. Because all I got from this video is that the playstation move is exactly like the wii--it kinda works, but its glitchy enough that using it in a hardcore game will be annoying as hell.
Did anyone else notice that in the body tracking demo, the hands NEVER lined up right for anyone but the sony rep?

What part of "we created the code in a motel room and on an airplane" did you not understand?
Like you said in your own sentence, it's a tech demo. Since you have trouble with words, that means unfinished product. This wasn't a media display but more like a behind-the-scenes presentation.

Let's assume, for argument's sake, that it all was written in a 5 hour period of time (which isn't true; they never said that). This is a tech demo for a product coming out in a matter of months. If there are bugs now, there will be bugs then. And generally, when you "demonstrate" your "tech," you are trying to show how it does what you claim it does. If your "demonstration of the tech" is buggy, why wouldn't people assume that the tech itself is buggy?
Oh, and I don't have a problem with words. Don't be a jerk, jarhead.

Stupid comments are only working if I'm not saying anything relevant to the blog entry . . .
Let's assume they wrote all the code on a plane in 4 hours (which they never claimed--they only said that a few demos were written en transit). They're demoing their tech--years of R&D--and trying to woo developers. If the demos are glitchy, why would devs--or consumers--assume the tech will work perfectly for them? Why would I spend money developing for something that I don't know works?
Oh, and I don't have a problem with words, jarhead. Don't be an ass just because you disagree with me.

Because developers understand that it is a "TECH DEMO" and you do not. It is just showing the flexibility and accuracy of the MOVE. And exactly HOW it works. Developers would be the first person to understand that something you made in one night, does not work 100% correctly.
Ah, nevermind you are just trolling.

But it /didn't/ demonstrate the accuracy of the Move. When the body tracking program (which /wasn't/ written overnight) kept wigging out with the dude's hands, that was accuracy (even after he calibrated the wands as instructed)? Or what about when a second person walked behind him and the tracking went haywire? You don't think that will ever happen in your home when you are using this?
I'm not trolling, I'm just pointing out that if they were trying to impress people (devs, consumers, whoever), they could have done a better job.
And honestly, I think anyone who has a wii or ps3 (lolSIXAXIS) should be as skeptical as I am about this (Natal seems even more unlikely to work right). Motion sensing, head & body tracking, and wands just . . . aren't quite there yet. I don't know, maybe devs need a few more years to really get these controls down pat. Or maybe the hardware needs another generation to be refined to an acceptable accuracy level. Hell, maybe I'll be wrong and the Move will rock. But I just haven't seen this kind of tech pay off yet, and this video didn't make me feel better about it.

They are showing software that will never be released in general on hardware they made themselves. They are not showing off a product that will be on sale in a few months they are showing what is possible with the technology they have to people who can give feedback on what they would like to do so they can make it better.
At a request from Engadget or as an act of graciousness they are showing this to a small audience of people who understand that. You are not one of those people. Wait until Move actually comes out then make up your mind. I can't tell you it will be up to what you expect but a tech demo will never ever ever be up to what YOU seem to want
Side Note: Before anyone jumps on my neck about it being gracious of them to show this. Sony has been pretty consistent in showing things they are working on which quite often has Dr Mark's work. This is consistent with that and it's not something they need to do but they seem to do it pretty often and gracious is the word I'd use for it. Judging by how many times Sony has said or shown things waaay too early I'm sure another word could be found. Feel free to use it instead if you like.

Oh, I wasn't supposed to see that video? Phew, glad I caught the bootleg video before they pulled it! Oh, wait, Sony *knew* it was being taped?
It was a public tech demo. Don't be silly and mince words.
You can think whatever you want. Just like I can think whatever /I/ want. And in the case of the Sony move, I've wanted to be cautiously skeptical until I see the tech in action. Because honestly, I've been burned by motion controls once already (the wii), and I don't need to drop another $100 on tech that never quite seems to work right. I mean, even metroid prime 3 has moments where the wiimote is glitchy (like the things where you pull and twist levers and stuff). Same with wii sports (in golf, I fight with it to no end to detect the gentle motions of putting).
