"Personal reasons" mark the departure of Yasuhiro Wada, the creator of the Harvest Moon franchise, from Marvelous Entertainment Inc., Kotaku reports. Wada will relinquish his current position at the end of the month, but will continue to serve the company in an advisory capacity.
Wada has been critical of Marvelous as of late, voicing his concerns about the publisher's lack of brand recognition. While we'd agree that not every gamer out there knows about Marvelous, we'd also argue that producing one of the best games of 2009 is certainly a big step toward gaining consumer trust.

Marvelous just needs more efficient management of the developers its working with. Cing took forever on Little King's Story, for instance. That game could have been made profitable at its sales level if they had kept things disciplined.

You can't gain consumer trust if no one knows its your game, though...
Marvelous doesn't market itself in the same way as Activision, EA, Capcom, Ubisoft, Konami, or even to a lesser extent Namco. Those companies make you think "Oh, I'm buying a game" more often then "Oh, I'm buying a good game".
I don't think it's a quality issue either, although these brands have built up a decent amount of trust. Their brand, logo, name, everything is recognizable. Marvelous, on the other hand, has a ton of games out there that are pretty good, yet no one knows who they are.
I agree with Wada completely, as considering he's a fairly talented person, I'm sure he'll be missed at the company. I'm sure his "advisor" status will only last until he finds another gig.... hope he doesn't sign on with Itagaki.

Personally, I loved the original Harvest Moon. I remember reading Nintendo Power about it and wanted it so bad, but couldn't find it anywhere. When I finally found it at a local Babbages (what is now Gamestop), I was thrilled.
All sequels to the series since, I have wanted to love them, but they just didn't have the charm of the original for me.
Man, I spent hours on that game.

Well, in a way, i hope it will not end the harvest moon series but i'd like it to take a more serious way. latest games from the series were really for little kids. HM is a series that need a lot of innovation at the time.

Since the release of HM64 the series has really gone downhill. However I had kept home that they'd one day release another good one, although that hope is fading fast now.

(in case it's not clear, I think hm64 was the last good one, not the downfall of the series)

Absolutely agreed. I couldn't get enough of HM64, and none of the games since have been more than okay at best.
Check out Chulip on the PS2 for a somewhat recent and very good game by the same developers.

What will happen to harvest moon?!
I'm a big fan and have played almost all of them. Rune factory frontier is one of my favourite franchises now too, and that's only with 4 games, all of them amazing.
I hope this man continues to make games.

As long as Yoshifumi Hashimoto gets to keep making Rune Factory games, I'm happy.
Still waiting on an RF3 north american release date by the way. ~_~

cool, never heard of it, I'll have to pick it up this summer.
As I said though, I am still holding out hope, and hopefully come the new psp harvest moon I'll be surprised although based on the plot, "
players must farm their hearts out in order to save Leaf Valley from the evil Funland Corporation"
I doubt that this will be the case.

My gf and I are sad now. Harvest Moon was one of our favorite series.
...and I know I'm the odd one out, but: My favorite was A Wonderful Life for the gamecube. I know, it's very different from the rest, but it's what made it beautiful. Literally the only game that made me nostalgic of my beginning hours of playing it (having nostalgia of "early years" during "later years" as if I had lived it).
Though you had to play it slow to get that feeling... most frantic farmers never felt that, so they didn't appreciate the feeling A Wonderful Life was going for.
