G4 has posted an article detailing the 'Player Investment' system. As the name implies, it's designed to keep you -- the player -- invested in the character you've created. The character you create in Halo: Reach is persistent across both the single-player campaign and multiplayer -- even appearing in the cutscenes -- and both modes will allow players to unlock new customization options. Players earn credits (abbreviated cR) simply by playing the game and then these credits can be used to purchase different custom pieces of armor. Many different tasks will yield credits, though G4 notes that Bungie is making sure to balance task so they don't get in the way of normal gameplay. Each piece of armor, incidentally, is solely for visual customization -- they won't provide any gameplay benefits a la Modern Warfare.
One of the ways players will earn cR is with the new challenge system. Bungie will create daily and weekly challenges, small goals designed to keep players interested over the long term. The challenges can be anything, with Bungie's Luke Smith noting "kill X dudes" as an example. Whether said dudes be in multiplayer or single-player, that's up to Bungie.
The article also touches on the new ranking system. In addition to ranking players based on skill, the game will also track how they play. Players can earn "Commendations" which reflect their playing style. Make kills with a specific weapon and you earn Commendations for that weapon, which other players can see. Commendations can be earned for other actions too, like driving vehicles.
Finally, Microsoft has announced that new Halo: Reach multiplayer info will be dropping every Friday between now and the launch of the multiplayer beta in May. The updates will appear on Bungie.net starting this Friday, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled (for jet packs).

Bungie games are good. Just too early to slap GOTY on it yet.

Wait, I thought Mass Effect 2 was Game of the Year.
What happened to that?

Halo: Reach beating God of War 3 for GOTY won't happen, so no.

I hate when people say "GOTY!!1!" before it's even out. Sure it's gonna be good, but is it gonna beat out Mass Effect 2 or GOW III? We're just gonna have to wait and see.

1: This is the last real Halo game.
2: This game has been gutted and rebuilt from the ground up to be the best possible Halo experience.
3: Halo is extremely popular.
4: Games that come out in the first few months of the year don't win GotY. Or any awards. Look at the shafting of Killzone 2 for that.

@Traceur_Ryuk Part 2
I agree entirely. The game is probably going to be very very good, but just instant GOTY before release and play is just kinda lame. Reach will be awesome, but gets old when a Halo title is fanboyed into the GOTY bandwagon.

ME2 is still my game of the year, and I've played all of the big new releases. I should probably get behind another game though, because my pick for last year (ACII) didn't really win many GOTY awards.

What a surprise. The biggest Bungie pole rider, Bradwart, thinks that a Halo game is going to win Game of the Year before anyone has even played it. Oh, wait, everyone has since it isn't going to change much at all!

Who the hell is calling MW2 Game of the century? Take a look at any MW2 post and you will see it the opposite.
Stop making stuff up for your own stupid argument.

Yeah... right
Also, I just think "GOTY" statements shouldn't be made until at least 24 hours after release of the game.

Huh, that's odd, the GI cover story said that the replacement for equipment (Bubbleshield, power drain, etc) would be armor customization, and you could configure your armor to give you active camo or other stuff.

Those are two different things. Armor appearance customization is what this article is talking about, and has no effect on gameplay (similar to the Reconz craze). Armor abilities are the things such as camo, sprint, etc that will be equipable in multiplayer and are what are replacing equipment.

No no no. What you're thinking of is Armor Abilities. They act like your third weapon in that you can swap them and keep reusing them and have cool down period (or reload time if you will). Their function is to act like a personal version of Halo 3's equipment, but changes the gameplay in that you can develop your own play style depending on which Armor Ability you choose (ie Active Camo or Sprint).
These armor customization options are purely cosmetic and are to help reflect you as a player in an online space.
Hope that helped.

Yeah but they are armor right? I guess i expected them to be cosmetic as well as useful.

I hope the Custom Armor and Armor Abilities do go hand in hand if not to some degree. I'd like to identify strengths and weakness when going up against a Spartan twice my bulk. It'd be a shame if that bulked up Spartan was not even able to launch me across the universe.

@Aristokrat -- It's a proven fact that wearing full Recon makes you better at Halo3. They've done studies and everything.

I don't think they've said anything about armor abilities in single player, but I'd imagine they're integrated into the campaign in a logical manner (i.e. camo during a stealthy mission, etc).
Also, I'm not saying Recon is the be-all-end-all of armor types, just that the craze for it was big enough that accounts were stolen over having it.

I wonder what the new Recon will be. Or the new Hayabusa (i.e. the hard to get cool thing that got played out super quick), for that matter. I remember helping with the search to figure out how to unlock that skull - "playing" the stupid rings to make the Halo theme.

Meh, after Bad Company 2 came out, I'm set when it comes to multiplayer games. I don't care for lone wolf style games, and would rather play team-based multiplayer games.

Yeah, you could play team slayer, but nobody really uses teamwork. It suffers from mainstremitis, it's too popular for it's own good.

Maybe they should give stats to Commendation items & divide up multiplayer into various Commendation brackets(like ladder brackets). If you spend X-amount of Commendations on your loadout/gear, you get bumped into a higher Commendation bracket. It could be fun to play in a bracket where one guy put all his Commendations into his Sniper Rifle, and another guy who put into his shields, etc. It'd make for some interesting and distinct multiplayer matches.
