Not to be outdone by the brick-and-mortar antics of Wal-Mart, Amazon is offering a $20 credit toward future game purchases for pre-ordering Super Mario Galaxy 2. It's like you're saving money on video games from the future. The news follows the discovery that Wal-Mart is offering the same deal for both Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Halo: Reach. As we reported earlier this morning, Amazon has also countered the Reach offer. With Mario being discounted as well, it's pretty clear that Amazon doesn't want to be undercut on either potential blockbuster.

pardon my skepticism but this means i would be paying $30 for Mario Galaxy 2? mind = blown
Posted: Mar 25th 2010 6:21PM 01 said
Well...not really. I just did the pre-order, $49.99 for the game and I somehow had a $10 credit that I had forgotten about, so I paid $44.99 w/ shipping. The $20 credit applies to a FUTURE game purchase (which they apply to your account 2 days after the game ships, so you can't get the credit and cancel your pre-order), but I'll just put that towards Metroid: Other M. So I'm actually getting Metroid for $30, which is pretty sweet, and that plus the surprise credit towards Galaxy makes me a happy gamer today.

Oh no! ANOTHER rescue the princess game?!
What ever shall we do?!
We totally care that Princess Peach is caught again!!!
No, seriously, I doubt even Mario cares Peach was captured again. Apparently whenever she's caught, he gets to go on another crazy adventure. It's like he pays Bowser to do it.
If you want to care about storyline or goal in a Mario game, go get one of the Mario RPGs.

Will Super Mario Galaxy 2 dominate the sales charts without giving Halo so much as a Reach around?

Really? Downvoted because I personally felt insulted by a "you're so gay" remark?
So riddle me this Lonecow: what if my comment was "U R MR BREEDER". IMHO, that would have been just as insulting as the reply I replied to.
I totally get that I'm in the minority here as a gay forty-something vidiot, but I thought this site was a place to discuss and debate videogames, not to insult others.

As much as I prefer Amazon, it's only credit toward a future game purchase...$20 at Wal-Mart is more valuable to me. That's almost a week of groceries.

God I wish I only spent $20 a week on groceries.

I spend $20 a week on gas getting back and forth between home and the grocery store. Most of this is because I shop at Costco, and because they have damn good Pizza and cheap soda, but also because I can't live on $20 in groceries a week.

Just don't buy ALL your groceries at wal-mart. so much of it is ultra processed and artificial, you almost can't buy bread that has any respectable amount of fiber and grains on the shelf.

Like 12 bucks at Wal-mart gets you 10lbs of rice. That's what I use to live off of :-/ Now I spend like no less than 60 bucks a week for groceries (for two people). I would/will get it from Wal-Mart.

It looks like the gift cards are for only for Walmart.com and are not valid for in-store purchases. This may temper some enthusiasm about the Walmart offer, especially when it comes to redeeming the cards on groceries.
I like Amazon's price guarantee on preorders -- Basically, you get charged the lowest price Amazon lists for the product between your preorder and the ship date. I also like these $10 or $20 credits Amazon offers because I typically use the credit for the next game I buy, which often nets me another $10 or $20 credit.
I plan on preordering SMG2 now, and using the $20 credit for that to preorder Halo: Reach.

And it's only a credit on future video game purchases, not any Amazon item. Count me in for the Wal-mart deal as well.

I'd go with the walmart offer, Amazon fails to mention that if you don't buy another game within 30 days, the "credit" expires. I learned this the hard way after the $10 gaming "credit" I got for pre-orderig Mass Effect 2 was 2 weeks expired by the time I pre-ordered Splinter Cell: Conviction. B.S.

Hum... last time I did this (believe from MW2), the code to redeem the credit expires in a month... once you redeem the code and the credit is added your account it takes awhile (~3 months) for it to expire. Also, they do state the fine print for the gift cards... well Red Dead Redemption has it, Halo Reach and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are too new of a listing to have the link yet.

So here's what I will do. I will use the $10 credit I got from FFXIII on Mario Galaxy 2. I will in turn use that $20 credit on preordering Halo Reach. I will then receive another $20 credit and will buy something in the fall when Reach comes out.
$50 in savings is definitely not bad for three games that I have really wanted for a while.

Alright I'm into this. I was also thinking the other day that they need to make that game show Minute to Win It on NBC into a legit game. I'm shopping around the idea, what do you all think?
Posted: Mar 25th 2010 2:32PM baby sea tuna said
Yeah, and it should be on Wii, because they don't have enough terrible games already. Oh, and can it have a low-res, poorly mocapped Guy Fieri hosting it? That guy isn't the least bit awful.
Have you presented this idea to Moonvest over at CBS yet? I heard he thought Goldcase would make a great video game too!

Done. Mario Galaxy 2 was a rental for me before this, due to it seeming like Mario Galaxy 1.5 instead of 2, but with 20 off a future game....I have no choice, my hands are tied.

Not to be cynical, but amazon will likely save you more than 20 dollars on the game in the future, through a sale or one of its new/used vendors. It'll be a while though, the original is still barely below 40. I just don't believe in rebates and credit bonuses when I can just get it straight up for a good price in the future.

I'm not waiting 2 years to play this just so that I can save $20.
If Best Buy picks up this deal, I'd probably go there since they have store pickup. I'd prefer not to wait for shipping or pay extra for faster shipping. I didn't see any place for store pickup with Walmart. But otherwise I'll probably go with either Amazon or Walmart because $20 credit is too good to pass up.

Retailers will knock 20 off at some point in the future, as a weekly sale or something. It happens frequently.

I've got this crazy idea (not that I would do it though), that you could purchase mario galaxy from walmart, get your 20$ card, and then return the game. You could probably do this at a few different walmarts even... I don't think that they're too careful

The only question is competing with my impatience, especially since May 23rd is a Sunday launch, which means it would be impossible for Amazon to make the same-day delivery like they usually do, and that's only if i ordered top-tier shipping which largely voids the price differential

The problem is I could buy it from the store and not have to purchase shipping. If I want to play the game the day it comes out ( Sunday) I have to buy in store. Or else pay for $1 shipping
