In a recent interview with CVG, Valve head honcho Gabe Newell responded to questions about the mood of future Half-Life installments with a decidedly spooky answer. "I feel like we've gotten away from genuinely scaring the player more than I'd like, and it's something we need to think about, in addition to broadening the emotional palette we can draw on," Newell explained.
While he's probably referring to intense encounters like the the zombified village of Ravenholm from Half-Life 2, we personally can't think of a scarier development for the franchise than a loose 2015 release window for the franchise's next entry.

Alyx has been too feisty at Valve lately. Hard to deal with, thus, Half-Life has been absent. We all saw this coming.

How about an Episode 3 update instead of your mood swings?
Posted: Mar 26th 2010 4:41PM Shadowbender said
Screw that, I just want HL: 3. However, if they do another episode, then they have to release another Orange Box.

Continuity. We need Episode 3. Then a new Half-Life.

why? Why can't episode 2 just be the last episode? It's not like HL3 wont continue HLE2s story

Well if that is the route they are going to take then I can't complain. I just want the original episode 3 concept they flaunted, albeit in Episode 3 or Half-Life 3.

Exactly. I want a full-length, complete Half-Life game that continues right after Episode 2. Would you rather have an expansion (even if it's lengthy) or a whole, complete game.

That depends on content vs cost. Honestly, Half-Life is in my top 3 favorite series of games. If they continue from HL3, that's fine. I just don't want them skipping out on things.

At least we know they're still thinking about Half-Life.

they're probably talking about their experience with two Left4Dead games between Episode 2 and Episode 3

The first time I played through Ravenholm on the first XBOX it scared me good. It's become a favorite area of mine.
With that said, I wish Valve would get their act together about Half-Life and tell us something. Teasing is fun for a while, but now it's just frustrating.

Heh, I never finished Ravenholm either, but that's because I only got HL2 with the Orange Box and never have time to finish it.

So hes just talking about themes he wants in the next one? I guess we can expect this game in 3 years.

It's funny Ravenholm is scarier than most games today and it was one level in a game.

I refused to play that level at night. I only played it during the day with somebody else in the room with me. I too hated that level...
but I secretly love it cause of the suspense...

I never got what people found so scary about Ravenholm. Sure it was atmospheric, but it just felt like a HL2 map like any other with some physics gimmicks in it... except dark. The only remotely unnerving bit to me was meeting the fast zombie for the first time.

Great. Newell had a "flip the tea table" moment and had Episode 3 completely redone.

Valve make Polyphony digital look like they're rushing GT5 out the door! I've only started a proper playthrough of half life 2 and its episodes recently and I'm taking my time so maybe when I'm done we'll have details on episode 3.

It's the apostrophe in "Can't". As I had someone point out to me: you can't reply to anyone who has an apostrophe anywhere in their name. It just breaks the whole system.

If nothing else, I wish they would clarify whether or not they're just going to skip over Episode 3 and go right to Half-Life 3. I'd prefer it if they'd release Episode 3, to have a finite ending the that story arc, but in the end it won't really matter. Worst case scenario: They lump Episode 3 together with Half-Life 3 and we just have to wait even longer...
