Personally, while the Penny Arcade games were fairly decent and solid, it wasn't much of a hit. So this news is no surprise.

This is total bs and will keep me from investing in episodic content again... I loved both 1 and 2, for them to piss it away without caring about the fans is just wrong...

Like they said, they didn't want to half ass it. So technically they are doing you a favor by not creating a pile of crap to spend your money on.

From the sounds of it they didn't really have a choice. They say that, "They definitely could've done both games."

To me that sounds more like, "We were hoping they could do both titles, but they said no. I guess it's for the best. We don't want them to focus on their game and leave ours in the dust."

It sounded more like "they could have done both titles, but ours wouldn't have been a priority, and it would have been the B team working on it, so we'd rather just not do it" to me.

It's understandable. The studio has a game that is getting actual honest to god publisher support ($$$$) and as a studio, they've got to run with that if they are going to grow.

It sucks, but dems the breaks.

How dare they not churn out shit games just to complete the story!

If only they had some other avenue through which they could tell the remainder of this tale...

You know, they were ALMOST done Episode 3, before the guy who played Dr. Breen died, and they had to start ALL OVER from the beginning, and write Dr. Breen out.

It's not surprising. Episode Two only generated one third of the sales of the original - http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/22894/GDC_Hothead_Duo_Talk_DeathSpank_Indie_Experience_Episodic_Gaming_Retreat.php

I think they just messed up the timing and the pricing. Telltale have paved the way with selling entire series up front, and ensuring customers know what they're going to get and when they're going to get it.

Do you really want to invest in an episodic game if you never know if it'll complete?

Making it a generic japan-o-rpg probably didn't help either.

Are they really surprised people weren't interested in paying $20 per episode for not exactly the most popular series?

You're right in saying the price point was high, but it was a pretty good game in my opinion. Worth 20 bucks? Nah, but still a good game.

I never finished the 1st one - and keep saying I need to, but it wasn't that fun compared to my backlog of other games. Also, the price-point was too high for me to consider buying in on a second game.

Of the "first" three, obviously. Not the originals. I feel like if I don't specify, some asshole will sass me.

I'm pretty sad to hear that news... I really enjoyed the first two games. I finished them both which is more then I can say about 95% of the games that I own.

That said, I trust Gabe & Tycho's judgment so I'm sure it was for the best.

If you're going to do episodic games, then you really need to have ALL episodes done before hand, then just spread out the release every 5-6 months so the interest is still there. There was little interest in the GTAIV episodes since it took so long for their release.

Again, the way Telltale do this is perfect. They work on the following episodes after the first has been released, but generally they're all pretty far along from as soon as the first is released so the following episodes are released monthly (or at worst 2 months apart)

But yeah, if developers are going to do it like this, I don't really see the point.

Part of the reason why episodic gameplay is so attractive for developers/publishers is that they can actually make some money while they are creating the content. And you can minimize the risk of investing in something if it's episodic. You can cut the project off if it isn't generating enough revenue.

If you wait until it's all done, then companies lose those benefits entirely.

I think people are starting to shy away from "episodes" and "planned trilogies" and the like ,especally for single player games because frequently the damn things are not being finished, leaving you hanging hopeing they make the final one just to finish the damn story.

Might just be me however, i am losing faith in all single player stoires due to the fact that so many of the damn things don't actually end :(

Hopefully the PA lot will at least finish the story via there comics or release what they planned fro the rest of the story or something.

Very clever, Penny Arcade, you have accomplished your biggest spoof of all, mocking Half-Life 2: Episode 3. I'm sure it was all a ruse to begin with, just to lead up to the inevitable "there won't be an episode 3" tag-line.

Well played, clerks.

I bought the first one at release as I was going to PAX 2008 and felt I should play the Penny Arcade game. I didn't actually play it for quite a while after going to PAX, but I ended up really liking it. I immediately picked up Ep 2 and liked it as well.

I'm bummed to see there won't be any more. I'm not surprised, as I'm assuming the second Episode probably didn't sell all that well. I guess I'm not sure if the first one sold either.

Well.. I mean.. Episode 2 could be the greatest piece of video gaming ever created.. I have no idea. I couldn't justify spending another dime on it after the first episode.

If the first two hadn't cost so much maybe they would have sold better. I couldn't believe it when I heard the first was $20. Skipped it and bought the second, which I did really enjoy, but if they'd have been cheaper I bet they could have done a lot better in sales.

So sad! I really liked both those games---they did a lot of things that I wish JRPGs would do, like integrating real-time elements into turn-based combat, using humor well, and having a unique art style. In fact, they were some of my favorite RPGs in recent times; I'm really sorry we won't get more!
