They were just batshit insane to charge $20 for a 4 hour game. Anyone with half an ounce of sense in their head did the math on that and figured out they'd end up paying $80 for a 16 hour watered-down RPG. Those that didn't realize it was only a four hour game until after they finished it certainly weren't going to shell out the $15 for the 2nd episode. At the most, these episodes should've been $8-$10 a piece.

I don't know what was going on with their budget that precluded them from charging a reasonable price for it though, I really don't think it came down to greed. It'd be interesting to hear why exactly they felt they had to price it so high.

So, it bombed, then. That's what they're saying, right?

Pretty much. PA grossly over evaluated the brand popularity.

Episode One did pretty well. I think it's in the top 50 XBLA games, and that was before the big DOTW when it was half off (and it's only $5 on Steam, so it's probably done well there too).

Episode Two was the problem, I don't think it ever managed to make it out of the bottom 50 on XBLA (bottom 25 - nay - bottom 10! though keep in mind there's been a lot of duds/sales duds on XBLA recently to push it up) even after the DOTW sales.

Sucks too, loved both games. Though as much as I'd love an Episode Three, I am really looking forward to DeathSpank too. Would be nice to have both though . . .

I would have bought them, but I was waiting for the whole pack of 4 to come out. I hate episodic games, give me all of it or give me none! And now I can safely get none of them knowing the series will go unfinished. Too bad.

Game needed to be $5, or $10 at most. It was destined to fail as soon as they put a price tag on it.

I feel ripped off, like I was told to pay 25% of a movie pass at the begining of each quarter of a movie and the thing was shut off right in the middle of it.
I'd like a compensation for the 50% I've spent ¬¬
The games aren't even good, the only reason I overlooked that is because it's PA stuff :P

I don't find the penny-arcade guys to be all that entertaining --maybe 1/10 of their comics gets a chuckle out of me-- so I wasn't particularly interested in _paying_ for the same stuff they put on their site, just in game form.

I really respect that they're able to make a living being big kids though. One would think they wouldn't have such a negative outlook on everything, since they're living the dream... but that could just be their persona's... it's hard to see where Tycho/Gabe stop and Mike/Jerry start.

And I disagree with calling them game critics. Their comics/editorials are often full of douchebaggery, applying double standards to what they deem worthwhile vs shitty, so I'd call them entertainers but not critics.

Their first mistake was charging $20 for it. I have seen some dedicated Penny Arcade fans, but not that dedicated

...this is unforgivable. I bought those damned things hoping that it would complete the story of the uprising of the four gods and I get freaking "Shenmue'ed?"

No, screw those bastards. They're webcomic can continue to make its cathulu jokes and poking at homosexuality without me. Good day!

I guess it's nice of the PA guys to be so charitable in regards to Deathspank (note sarcasm), but I wish they'd just admit they didn't want to finish the games because it was too hard and they (at least Mike) weren't having fun.

I thought they did a great job with the old school RPG style and adding some intuitive elements into the mix to make battles more interactive and much less tedious. Plus, the dialogue brings me back to the old Lucasarts point n' click days. How I miss thee, Day of the Tentacle.

After I beat episode 2, I immediately started looking for release dates for ep. 3...

Sad face =(

Better to say they're not making an Episode III than announce it and never work on it.

DAMN i know i am late to the replying party ( just noticed this in the breaking news area ) I bought the bundle pack for $14.99 total ( pretty much the cost of one episode so basicly Buy 1 Get 1 FREE ! ) I saw the review on game trailers for the first and thought it looks ok but i wish i can get a hands on demo with it that way i know i want this game or not want this game. I said this is the best deal i seen for it in sometime so i bought it sat playing it and became in love with it ( took me about 6 - 8 hours too complete ) and that how long some disc titles take to almost complete but if you run through the game knowing what too do it probably would take less time.

I loved these games. I loved the introduction too the Fruit ******* and i don't know why i did but i enjoyed see what enemies did for attacks cause some were weird and funny and ordinary attacks ( i mainly remember the 2nd game enemies the snob woman and man, the guy would walk up too you and kiss you on both cheeks for an attack and i thought that was funny ) the words coming out of enemies mouths before you fight them are funny.

I liked the humor in this game alot but i really feel like i just i got screwed on this one many may not like the game but i did and the price point doesn't help ( i wouldn't wanna pay $20 to find out i get a game i don't like ) the price should be lower as previous commenters said and at least have a demo for the game ( tho the game is short but not make it too big of a demo, don't wanna give too much of the game away )

never read the comics but loved the game but now want nothing more too do with PA

"Coupled with the news that Episode 2 only earned "one-third the sales of Episode 1," things didn't look promising for the series."

Coincidentally, I only played one-third of the 2nd episode before I got tired of the gameplay. I look forward to the book though.

Bought both episodes because there was a Linux version available and loved both!
Which concerns me the most, is that we hopefully remain playing the two episodes, even after a few month, which is not absolutely clear as they used DRM in the games.

I'm not even a regular PA reader (ep 1 was my introduction to FFs, and i just bought the eps this week), but i loved these games so much that i was ready to shelve them with the Best Beloveds like FF7, Radiata Stories, Tales of the Abyss, etc. A game doesn't need to have hours and hours of play or millions of items or a complex fighting system to be excellent; it just needs to be tight, balanced and beautifully turned, and this one was. Sigh.

I still hope another developer will pick up the other two episodes, if the original one can't devote the time.
