Ubisoft is trying to make amends to legitimate PC gamers that were blocked out of recent DRM-enabled titles due to a recent server outage. Hackers, angry at Ubisoft's draconian DRM protocol, which requires a persistent internet connection, even for single player games -- knocked out the publisher's authentication servers, preventing owners of games like Assassin's Creed II from being able to play at all.
While Ubisoft has modified its DRM protocol, it doesn't seem the publisher has any plans to discontinue using it any time soon. In light of the recent outage, the publisher has started to send letters offering gamers either a free game or DLC, depending on the product originally purchased. A support forum for Assassin's Creed II appears to confirm that those affected by the outage may receive an offer to upgrade the standard edition to the "Black Edition," which includes additional areas not found in the original. Those that already have the Black Edition will be able to receive either HAWX, Heroes Over Europe, EndWar, or Prince of Persia.
Certainly, this is the right move for the publisher to take, offering a virtual olive branch for a policy that has only generated negative press thus far. However, the Ubisoft forums are alight with those that have yet to receive any compensatory offer. We're reaching out to Ubisoft to find out more details of this offer, and will update if we hear a response.

The best part? It's already been cracked. This is pathetic. I WAS going to buy the game (truthfully was. I've been on a PC only streak with Modern Warfare 2 (yes, it was gimped, but still good) Mass Effect 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Torchlight, Just Cause 2- I really was hyped for Assassins Creed 2) until I heard about the DRM. Please, just go back to CD check. *sigh* My love for PC games is waning. Luckily, Steam/Valve still to a great job at making everything great. I Love Valve.

18.again start the game...
19.when the login screen comes then there will be a gear icon near the minimize.
20.click that----->choose not to save savegames onto the internet.
21.it means the games will load savegames from ur computer.
22.after choosing not to save the savegames on the internet, the ubisoft launcher must be restarted in order to play ur game..ok...just restart ur game after this n u will be playing this game from this savegame.

well, it sounds complicated, but as far as i know that version doesn´t work either.... so as i said once, we only need to wait until AC2 goes to ubi soft cheap basket.... they are not going to keep servers for this game forever as soon as they ask peanuts for it they are going to release it without the drm and it´s very likely pirates know this too and they are waiting for that to happen in order to crack it. it happened with the 3 big ubi titles that had starforce (two thrones, king kong and splinter cell 3) as soon as those games were considered cheap they release them with any of the standard protections..... so at the end both pirates and legit players we should just wait until that happens to avoid that stupid DRM.. more likely a year or so.......

I wonder how many were affected, because if it's anywhere high enough that the things EA giving away is close to the amount they were trying to prevent losing from pirating (reason for DRM), that'd be hilariously ironic.

No, not really. They are giving away the Prince of Persia remake of the original and other games that are all pretty old to begin with. The PoP remake game out in like 2002? So its an eight year old game. As far as I know, most eight year old games barely sell anymore on shelves unless priced at $4.99 or so. There might be a few exceptions like say FF titles and old-titles re-released on new platforms.

This is what I would have liked
"We know we screwed up big time and the DRM we put into our games are faulty. We now realize the error of our ways and to make ammends we are taking out the DRM for all the games it is implemented in. We will not make this mistake again and we apologize for treating our customers like criminals"
Then I would have gone right to amazon.com and preordered splinter cell again.

instead of getting rid of the drm to raise sales of your 60 dollar game, you decide to give away 30-40 dollar games for free?
makes sense, not like they are going to have to give away too many free games.

People are making this worse than it is, you need an internet connection to play, fine with me, my internet connection is always on.
If my internet goes of I can't play, fine with me when my internet goes down for an hour I just watch TV or do something constructive.
When the server went down I just played something else, when it came back I played AC2, nothing bad happened.
And now I get a free game because I couldn't play AC2, fine with me.

The point is that when their servers crash—which they have, and will—you can't play the game until they're up again. If they somehow have a data loss, you'll probably have to start from scratch. That's gonna /SUCK/ if you're at the final half hour of the game. Imagine something like that happening with Dragon Age, Fallout 3, or even Pokémon!
If I buy a single player game, whether or not it has multiplayer, I want /my/ saves on /my/ hard drive. If I want to play offline, I won't be able to access their servers, and I won't have access to /my/ saves. It doesn't make any logical sense for a single player game to have to have a connection to an online server just to play.

So Ubisoft, counting this, how much money do you estimate you've lost because of your draconian DRM? Because you may as well count those "free" games the same way you count "lost sales" due to piracy.
Posted: Mar 26th 2010 5:42PM Chareth Cutestory said
Any such estimate would surely be skewed by the industry-wide belief that every torrent of their game running is, for sure, a lost sale.

That wasn't too bad except the pirates don't need to insert a dvd if they use a cd/dvd-emulating application like Daemon Tools. So really, the insert dvd is extraneous. It's more like 'double click on cracked exe'

I've been doing most of my gaming on an Xbox 360 for the past couple of years. My PC got too old for new games, and I couldn't afford a new one. Now with increasing DRM garbage like this Ubi shaft job, game PCs are looking like a bad investment.
Even though the console versions of Ubi games don't pull this nonsense, I can't see supporting the company with any of my money. I want to play AC2 on my 360, but I will only buy it *used*. Ubisoft doesn't get any money from used sales.
